Like it or not, Naomi Osaka is women's tennis now. Her most recent actions have made tennis the front page news. She did the same back last Summer. Not only is she the most relevant women's champion today with four slams since 2018 but she is also on top of relevant social issues. She lets her racket do the speaking and then when she chooses to speak, people sit up and listen.
We are living in the Osaka era and most of us don't even know it.

Looks like women's tennis got fined 15,000 euros
Most popular is IGA!

Reigning Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek captured a maiden major title and the hearts of fans the world over, earning her first WTA Fan Favorite title. The votes are in and Iga Swiatek ends 2020 with one last title to add to the mantle: 2020 WTA Fan Favorite.

Up against fellow nominees Coco Gauff, Daria Gavrilova, and Daria Kasatkina, Swiatek won well over 50% of the fans' vote - with no recount in sight - to earn the victory as WTA Fan Favorite.

I agree Iga is more popular for tennis fans. Just go on Australian Open instagram and there is post with top5 womens seed, open comments and see what is happening, go open French Open instagram and see which WTA player pictures receive best response (likes/comments), go on WTA youtube channel and check whose highlights get most views.

In a year's time, when you mention women's tennis to non fans, they will ask you: Ah, that Osaka girl? Is she any good?

6. He wasn't always a tennis fan.
Cordae revealed to Ebro in the Morning that he met Naomi at a Los Angeles Clippers game. "I didn't even know who she was," he admitted. "I know Serena Williams. When you think about tennis, I just know Serena Williams."

So Osaka is "on top of relevant social issues..." Oh, spare me. "...the genocide of black people by the police..." Please. Let's keep in mind, by the way, that these "girl wonders" like Osaka, Kenin, Gauff, et. al. have no formal educations. Their parents put them in tennis academies when they were still at a single-digit age, and home schooled them in the evenings. (note: Serena went to Amherst and majored in Business and Pre-Med). While they're famous for their accomplishments on the tennis court, they can do virtually nothing beyond that. Since they were children, they've known absolutely nothing but tennis, tennis, tennis 24/7, almost to the point of it being a forced mental illness. They are, in reality, semi-literate bubbleheads whose celebrity-princess reputations are largely manufactured by the media. That's why Osaka got almost $50 million in endorsements last year.

Not trying to hijack the thread or rag on anybody, or say that these aren't basically nice people, but before you drop to your knees, thump your forehead on the floor and worship these bimbos, you need to put things in perspective.

Naomi is on her way to be a worldwide pop culture icon. Looks like the old white guys at the ITF and Slams are willing to help make that happen.

With so much variety and diversity in women's tennis today, Osaka is far from the defining voice. There's way more personalities who can exemplify women's tennis than one person.

If Swiatek defends the French Open title and starts to get results at other slams, I can easily see her rivaling or surpassing Osaka as the new face of female tennis. She has that likability and rooting factor that makes a star. Unfortunately, the likes of Ashleigh Barty don't have that X-factor or star quality that makes a star.

Coco Gauff has that star quality as well, but she needs to win slams first to be the face of women's tennis. But yeah, the only potential options to Osaka I can see right now are Swiatek and Gauff.

Everything was set up for Muguruza. And she gets blasted with injuries and unlucky draws and.. well, not being that consistent, but I still feel like she had/has star potential that was never fully realized.

To me she’s still a top 5 player and my favorite women’s player in a while. Hope she can make another push at Wimbledon.

So we are measuring tennis greatness and relevance based on Seventeen Magazine appearances? Jesus, the women’s tour is in trouble.

I don't know if we are measuring it or if we are just considering Naomi's crossover capability and how she seems to be the one crossing over.

Something else interesting about the Naomi effect. There is zero interest in women's tennis on here in its current state. Players who bring it to life? Graf, Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. Check out all the Naomi threads.

I still prefer her. Not sure why, but she always has a spot on my list no matter how many setbacks she faces. Similar to Anna K. in that aspect.

Which is funny compared to the real world timeline. People were getting absolutely sick of seeing Graf in all the finals. That's part of why the teenagers (Hingis, Venus, Kournikova, Lucic) were so magnetic for people early on.

Those teens did a good job, too. Like Osaka is doing. Though she's no longer a teen. Still, four slams is good. Same as what, Barty, Switek and Kenin have put together with one to spare.

You could say the same thing about several female players in the last decade though, not just Muguruza. Sloane Stephens could probably have been even bigger than Osaka if she had any consistency.

Osaka has the star quality and consistency. Winning 4 slams will do that. There were a bunch of potential "new faces of womens tennis" who had the star quality and maybe won a slam or two, but lacked consistency at the top of the game.

Sloane would have been huge. She has the beautiful game, the looks, the easy going nature.
Muguruza too is very marketable.
But Naomi is doing something they could not do. Winning fairly consistently and winning big titles and managing to make headlines. Not easy to do.

Swiatek and Gauff are good options. A WTA with Osaka, Swiatek, Gauff and Barty at the top is a good one. Kenin, too.

The smart athletes use the pressers to promote their brand

In a way, I think Naomi is promoting her brand. It's a very SJW brand, and very relevant with the mental health topic, which is all over the media all the time right now.

Basically the people who bring tennis to life on here are either a) consistent winners (big 3, Serena although she doesn't win much now, Naomi) b) controversial figures (Kyrgios).

She could be sawing off the limb she is sitting on, however, so it will be interesting to see what she does now.

If she backs down she is a cowardly fool. If she doesn't she's just a fool.

It's probable that she'll negotiate a presser that is not a free-for-all and she'll come out on top.

After all, she could argue that the slams have failed to properly regulate pressers and that is the problem.

She would have a good point. It would be quite the feather in her cap if she was the one who bought about better press conferences.

She has literally fielded a thousand questions at her uneventful press conferences.
The questions are innocuous and are the same predictable questions every time.

Yet she claims that the questions at every one of her pressers are "mentally abusive".

Those are her words.

If she is to be taken seriously she needs to point out which questions were out of line. It should take just a minute since every presser is abusive. But she can't. Why? Because these so called "mentally abusive" questions do not exist.

So she is looking very silly and childish here and you look silly coddling this entitled malcontent.

Andy Roddick used to throw tantrums at press conferences, and he is not the only male.

They also don't have on court interviews with the loser for a reason.

Although I don't know how allowing them an hour or so to compose themselves for the presser makes it any easier.

Honestly, I think there should be an escalating punishment for skipping a certain amount of press conferences. A 15K fine each time obviously means nothing to someone as wealthy as Osaka. But getting a tournament ban for skipping say 3 to 5 press conferences consecutively might make Osaka realise she is not bigger than the game. A ban from playing her precious US Open might make her see there are consequences to her actions.

It's not fun, but media coverage is part of why Osaka and tennis make their millions. She needs to suck it up and accept it as part of the job and responsibility of being a tennis pro.

Osaka is everywhere in the media. She just doesn't like the bear pit that a press conference sometimes descends into. There's a reason political leaders now avoid them. She has a valid point.
