How did she manage to put up with the press all these years and become the best player on the tour only for this to become such a crippling problem for her now all of a sudden? Clearly she was handling the pressure before this even if it was uncomfortable.

I'm not trying to downplay anxiety, but I just don't get it.

You can't buy this kind of publicity. She means it, too. A win win for her.

If you don't want to deal with the press, how do you think this is a good idea?

I don't buy she's trying to avoid a **** storm, it's more like she is seeking one.

This must be Fake News.
TTW tells us that she is the face of women's tennis... How will RG ever go on without her?

Rg will go on. Naomi will be talked about the entire time even though we won't see her face there. Win for brand Naomi.

Funny, she had no problem holding press conferences about defund the police..etc. oh, but don’t ask me about my tennis.....so long....don’t come back. You have sucked the oxygen out of why we watch...TENNIS.....not your social media bs.

well that's what she wanted to do, just play tennis and not answer questions. If only simpletons like you could take your own advice and STFU and not post your drivel.

Answering questions is part of the job. She’s the one who makes things hard for herself. Answering a couple of questions must be extremely tough for mental health when you’re the world number 2, win slams and get millions, indeed.

Good for her. That'll show the French Open. I know Rafa wins it every year (or so) but I'm not a big fan of how they handle things.

You're more right than you could imagine. THIS is a microcosm of the EXACT reason Naomi withdrew, and good on her for showing the courage and grace and STRENGTH to do it. Ironically even by withdrawing she has triggered the maga sore loser snowflakes even more. Truly a sight to behold! They should be happy but are even ANGRIER that she withdrew. Le Sigh.
Naomi is too much for them.

At the very least this is going to make whatever her next press conference is an absolute nightmare for her now, even before the withdrawal. There's going to be an insane amount of attention on it.

And certainly this brought way more attention than her play would have this week. She's shown no signs of improving on clay and pressure from the press leading her to "doubt herself" or whatever she said last time was not going to be the reason she inevitably lost in Paris. She could've gotten in and out with little fuss this week, only having to answer a couple awkward questions about why she thinks her game doesn't work on clay.

Naomi just wants us to listen. Instead people scream insults at her and call her a liar, etc. No wonder she moved on by withdrawing.

They really bullied this girl out of the tournament. This is so sad. Depression is not a joke and this makes ITF look so oligarcian.
She quit on her own terms. Her depression probably played a huge role in not being able to deal with all of this media attention. But still, don’t make her out to be the victim of bullying. If she would’ve played normally then nobody would’ve said a thing.

It can get too much.
