Still young, choked her match away, but I don't think there's any question that she hits a great ball.

Her backhand has to already be one of the cleanest on the WTA.

She was matching a lot of Madison's power throughout the match.

I dont see her consistently playing the important points with confidence
I like her aggression but mentally another roller coaster lady of the tour

I think at only age 18, she will do well. She's going to get crazy support during the Tokyo Olympics. Her and Nishikori.

She's only 18 so I'd expect nerves and lack of fitness to be her weakest points.
She'll be close to top 50 end of the year..should be top 20 come Tokyo.

She played great until 5-1 in the deciding set after which she turned into O'Sucka.

Serena was a choker in the early part of her career. Just give her time

So in Japan can you just pick your last name? I mean her dad is Haitian, so clearly his last name isn't Osaka...however she was born in Osaka..so do you just pick what you want your kid to be named? if so kinda cool.

Typical WTA player, can hit hard from the baseline, cannot volley and mentally crumbles at the finish line.

    Nothing to get excited about.

You don't need to take the family name of your father in most countries. It could be her mother's or it could be an adopted one to express her heritage as half-Japanese because she grew up in the US.

Might be, but she went 6-3 in majors as an 18 year old. That's pretty rare these days. I think most teenagers are mentally weak, on and off court. Give her a couple years at least.

she produces really easy, smooth power. Unfortunately she put too much pressure on herself.

Perfect coach for Naomi : Carlos Rodriguez

Been keeping an eye on Osaka this past few months. My fave of the young women breaking through.

Already made 3R in 3 slams this year. She's definitely one to watch, lots of potential, good serve and great ballstriking. Obviously work to do on the mental side but she's young and that can only come from more match play on the big stage. I don't think she'll be forgetting that loss to Keys any time soon.

I still expect Naomi to win her first WTA next year, however it is good the off season is coming up, a time for Dave and her to go over the good results of 2016 and go over her game with a magnifying glass and find areas that need improvement.

Asian Serena Williams....a few feet away. I thought Caroline was playing Serena in the final.

She can play like Serena mixed with some great defensive game. Seen her at the US Open or Wimbledon....was surprised by her power.

somebody has already pointed out that she needs to fix her service technique or she will end up injuring herself within a few years. At the end of that Carol match, her shoulder was already beginning not to hold up.

Her father is Haitian and she plays nothing remotely resembles Japanese tennis.

How come her name bares no non-japanese name and she represent Japan ???

She was born in Japan, has a Japanese name, a Japanese mother, a Japanese passport, and the JTA offered her a good deal. All good reasons I think to represent Japan. Not being able to speak much Japanese would be a bit embarrassing though.

All true but you forgot cannot serve, cannot slice and cannot create angles, basically cannot play tennis properly.

after that Kuzzie match in TJ, her serve is a big weakness. Despite her potential service power, she has not perfected her technique yet, hence the instability and all the double faults.
