Watching the SF match yesterday on ESPN between Osaka and Serena with commentators from Evert and Fowler. Over the course of the match, it seemed to me that Evert had nothing but nice thing to say about Osaka. it is almost like Evert wanted Osaka the match; however Evert had to say nice things about Serena due to contractual network obligations and that Serena is an American. Whatever came out from Evert yesterday was nothing but positive for Osaka. The new champ has arrived.

Even though I’m also American I hate the commentators praising the Americans when there are so much more players that are super good

ESPN or any US Network is unwatchable when Serena is playing. They don't really care about the other Americans that much, it's really just Serena.

The USO 2019 Final was terrible, and I don't recall Evert on that. I'd have to go back and check, I think it was Stevenson, Chandra Rubin, Luke Jensen - at least on what I was watching. Amazingly, Stevenson was the least embarrassing one, though still not good. USO 2018 - also, awful.

Also, they're not that good, regardless of who is playing.

Chris Evert calls every Serena match and it’s embarrassing. You essentially have the President of the Serena Williams Fan Club calling her matches. At the beginning of the Serena/Sabalenka match she said something to the effect that no player had come back from having a child and had the success of Serena, ummm Chris I know you do zero prep before you go on but there was a player named Kim Clijsters who won majors at having a child.

It’s ok for Chris to be a Serena fan. It’s ok for her to call Serena matches - in theory. It’s ok to mention Serena’s accomplishments, which are many. Just be professional about it. She’s worse than homer team sports radio or TV announcers.

Everet hypes Serena everytime she plays. It has really gotten tiresome, considering Serena hasn’t won a major in 4 years and has not prepared herself physically and has aged out. Osaka has dialed in on Serena’s game and she can match Serena’s power, she dictates the points now. If Osaka can keep her focus, she should dominate for the next 10 years. Now keeping her focus may be her biggest challenge.

She should not be calling those matches because she doesn’t have the ability to be a professional during these matches.
I forgot to add the most important thing, she brings absolutely NOTHING to the table as an analyst.

I can’t disagree with any of that.

I think Evonne Goolagong won wimbledon after having a child.

Yes, Evert is very biased against whoever is playing against Serena. I could clearly see it in Sabalenka and Hahep matches; However, when during the Serana/Osaka match, I felt like Evert was very complementary to Osaka. It was almost like Evert wanted Osaka to win the match, not Serena.

I get the sense that Evert hypes up Serena to increase expectations and lead to a bigger letdown for her and her fans. She said a few times these past few weeks that there’s no reason why Serena shouldn’t win the tournament. That she’s playing well enough that she should win. And then she loses. I always thought Every hated Serena but has to pretend to love her. Her jabs are subtle. Or am I wrong?

Even Serena called Osaka a "cool cat" in her press conference. She's the real deal for sure - note that this shall already be the 4th consecutive year she's won a major.

All that remains to be seen is whether she can translate her dominance to grass or clay.

Interestingly, "Evert" was trending on Twitter during the match and it was mainly negative comments against Chris Evert. Funny to see the differences in perspective.

I don't think Chrissy ponders it at that deep a level, but I could be wrong.

So, she pretends to buy into the ESPN/US Network fawning and pushes it even further and then gets a personal kick out of it when Serena doesn't make it? Possible, I suppose.

Chrissy aside, the US Network fawning is real.

Interesting analysis but I’m not that certain of Everett’s true motives. I do remember many years ago Everet was not a fan of Serena. I’ve always thought that Everet eventually realized she’d better get on the Serena bandwagon and when she did she went all in, and now Serena can do no wrong.

She’s a master of the backhanded compliment. Subtle enough to fool ESPN but not the sj warriors

Osaka analysed Kyrgios serve, getting some little details that she could learn from it.
