Naomi Osaka's Attitude

Naomi Osaka can speak well you fools, she's just not used to interviews and doesn't really know what reporters want to hear, I'm sure 20 year old kids are the same. Tennis players are generally smart athletes and plus she's Asian, growing up/giving good interviews least her worries.

Looks like she improved huge amounts already, by mid-season she will be talking like Federer.

But as an elite professional athlete, do you think she has more of a responsibility to grow up?
Can you explain how being grown up is related to giving better acceptance speeches?

The vast majority of adults, many of them highly educated, are terrible at public speaking especially if unscripted. It doesn't reflect on people's maturity or intelligence much that they might stumble or speak nervously during speeches - it's just a more difficult thing to do well than people often realise.

If she gave speeches like this for her whole career you might wonder why she hasn't improved through experience but if the next couple are like this I wouldn't criticise her at all. But then I'm not some weirdo who expects sportspeople to live up to some standard of proficiency in things pretty much unrelated to their sport.

Agree, mostly. If she's just inexperienced and improves, that's fine.

I've noticed during those forced on court, and those painful pre-match interviews she doesn't really indulge the drama the interviewer tries to conjure ("That was AMAZING! How do you FEEL?!" "Oh... fine.") She has such a matter-of-fact, non-dramatic outlook, I can't dislike her. The low amount of BS she shovels is refreshing to me. And, her "nerdiness" is actually cool! If her speech were slick, I would've been surprised. I think she'll get more polished with practice. And she'll get plenty of that. I just hope she keeps the BS low.

I only like perfect people. Osaka isn't perfect. I don't like her.

I don't like people that are too perfect. Federer is too perfect. I don't like him.

I don't like people that are too careful and phony with the public. Nadal is too carful and phony. I don't like him.

I don't like people that are too rude. Kyrgios is too rude. I don't like him.

I don't boring people. Sampras was too boring. I didn't like him.

I just wish everyone could act appropriately, even if my standards of appropriate change in such a way is to find fault with everyone. Is that really too unreasonable? Sheesh.

By the way @EloQuent, this thread could be a hell of a lot better. Try to do better next time please.

Apologies if there's already a thread that covers this. I don't know if anyone caught Osaka's "speech" where she stumbled over her words before declaring it to be the worst winner's speech ever.
And who declared her winner's speech the worst ever?

Reread your own sentence, then ask yourself if you are the right person to be criticizing her use of language. :D

Where's OP? Is s/he off to make another stupid thread?

Can someone link me to his/her next stupid thread?

GPPD idiots are like ninjas, they just know when to disappear.

But... I think there should be a penalty for writing stupid stuff. Journalists get fired for writing dumb articles, right?

You're right, OP should be paying us for reading such stupidity.

OH so you're basically saying you were just spewing BS then? I thought so.

I don’t get your angst to what is a thought inviting question from the OP.

In fact, the OP doesn’t even clearly voice his own view on Osaka’s speech at IW. There is only the acknowledgement and inclusion of Osaka’s own view of her speech being the “worst”.

I have mixed feelings. I understand why people are very forgiving of her casual style. She's a cute kid, very relatable. But as an elite professional athlete, do you think she has more of a responsibility to grow up?

It’s a noteworthy question I should think. Expressed in manner that harvests discussion.

It is the opposite of your posts above that endeavour to terminate discussion.

Thanks!

There have been a lot of good comments in the thread, on both sides...and then a whole bunch that were unpleasant. Comes with the territory I guess.

Ha!

It’s a relevant question you asked.

I’d chime in with an opinion of my own excepting I don’t have one I can effectively argue. It would just be saying what I would like from celebrities, which itself is problematic for me. I don’t want to be very attached to celebrities irrespective of their virtues or otherwise.

Good reading.

I've got no issues with OP's argument, he's not wrong. But he decided to go after a young, 1st time winner when the ENTIRE tour, filled with more mature and established players do even worst interviews.

That's my problem. If you're going to go after 1 person in this regard, then the idiot needs to go after everyone.

He didn’t argue for/against anything. He took something Osaka said herself and framed a question off it.

What we want from celebrities, and where their responsibilities begin and end to the public is a good topic.

"I have no issues with this person I'm going to call an idiot."

Welcome to the internet. How far are we from calling me Hitler?

Not very far. @Bartelby should be up in a few hours.

How many racial references can you pack into a Volkswagen?

Why a Volkswagen?

Also;

Hey Bartelby!

Days just aren’t complete at this end without being called a racist/sexist by you.

It could be a reference to a certain controversial era or it could be the fact that Beetles and Minis were popular for the sport of people-stuffing.

The difference is @Bartelby does it with style and gravitas. It’s the way he makes friends, hurling a casual insult or two your way.

Tennis players tend to be a couple years behind on "being grown up." their lives are airport, hotel, court, airport, hotel, court starting in their tweens.
Venus and Serena have never come off as 30-year-old women to me. But that is what I love about them. They're fun, goofy, a lil immature... but they didn't have a proper childhood.
A lot of ATP players come off the same way.
This is the one sport where it's so hard to maintain friends and a social life. You're so on your own.

Naomi needs work.. but if she plays late into her 30s as per the norm.. she has plenty of time to get victory speeches good. It's kind of refreshing seeing some younger talent.

I agree, totally stupid. The sacrifice and hours and pain these players put in. The heck with anyone who makes a big deal about their speeches. Some people are very shy. Others have anxiety in front of people. Not everyone has to be the same. She put out effort, played well and she owes no one anything more. If sponsors want to work with her great, if not, oh well.
horrible thread!

Well it didn’t take long for her to go from the goofy, giggly, darling of Indian Wells to the bratty, unmotivated girl who finds Charleston, SC depressing and didn’t want to be on the court today.

The bright side is we won't have to hear a speech at the end of the tournament from her.

You guys are horrible. Bratty? Unmotivated? She's just a kid. Mentally fatigued.

You don’t read much do you, fool? I was quoting both of you idiots.

You quote what I said and attributed it to both of us moron.

I never said that she was bratty or unmotivated, just implied that I didn't want to hear her speak.

That said she probably has 100x the brainpower of you.

Yup, she must be a super genius.

It was so sad to hear her interview with Weissman after her 2nd round win in Charleston when she said she doesn't really have any friends.

Then the next day of course, she cries on the court and talks about feeling depressed.

I feel really bad for her and can understand how being introverted and shy can cause these feelings to develop. Hopefully she will overcome it, she's a really nice girl with a ton of talent and the last thing we should be doing is criticizing her speeches.

In fact, it was one of the best acceptance speeches I can remember. She looked so nervous, naive and natural, which is fine.

Anyhow, almost nobody cares about the acceptance speech. People care about tennis.

good to see some transparency.
they're just athletes after all, not trained public speakers, political experts or philosophers.
not to say that they're stupid, but that the world should stop idolizing (and expecting them to say anything interesting) these people who spend their lives training to chase/hit balls.
