Fed has 500 points to defend because he is the defending champion. Nadal had 350 points to defend because he was last years finalist. Nadal already lost and thus didn't defend those 350 points. However, now Federer needs to win at least 150 points or else the difference between them will shrink again, just like it did last week when Fed successfully defended his Indian Wells title but Nadal still got closer to him because Nadal didn't play there in 2005.

So now to get at least 150 points Fed needs to get to the semi (225 points) because the quarters are worth only 125 points.
