What is an ESL?
Early Start League. So they play the 2016 season in 2015. So they get a computer rating after their regular season is played.
What is an ESL?
That's actually my team. We all started playing tennis in the men's 101 clinic(due to our wives doing the womens 101 clinic and asking us to join them) starting around September 2014 and I think our first season was the winter 2015 season? I think a few of the guys played a season of mixed doubles with their wives that spring, but that was before I joined the country club. We went 2-4 that season and were pretty terrible. We had great coaches and all invested a lot of time on the court and went 5-1(I think) the next season. The following season we went 6-0 and went on to nationals.
I feel super proud of the team especially since we're a country club with a captive base of players. Every other team we played in sectionals and nationals was a super team of recruited players.
For the most part every team save one we played seemed pretty legit. Puerto Rico had one guy that was shamefully ridiculously good, probably could play division 3 tennis. He double bageled everybody. And they had a couple other guys that clearly should not have been 3.0. But due to our lineup being really lucky we were able to beat those guys. Texas had a couple of studs as well that have clearly played tennis a large part of their lives, but nothing crazy out of the ordinary I guess....we should have won. Our guys' nerves just got the best of them.
Which team is your, the Atlanta team?
Yeah, we have ALTA here which is bigger than USTA in Atlanta, so our USTA leagues are summer and winter.
It's only a 3 month advantage, but I can't say that it didn't help.
Strange, a guy that was in the exact same boat did get DQed. You sure they are exempt from being DQed? Our best player, Chambers, started the same time as Nikhil and he got DQed.
It isn't a case of one rule overruling another for 2016. The National rules just provide a couple options for a section to choose from for how to handle early start league players that get bumped up at year-end. One is to allow them to continue to play at their early start level but still be subject to being DQ'd if their rating reaches the clearly above level (strike threshold), and this is the option Southern (and other sections) elects to use.Well Southern section allows your players bumped to 3.5 to continue playing through sectionals.
Chambers was disqualified because he got too high in the 3.5 level to where nationals overrules the Southern section policy.

Note this changes and is all moot for 2017 as there are no more early start ratings to use for early start leagues and the rule is now that sections can still elect to allow players that are bumped up at 2016 year-end to play at their 2015 year-end level on the early start league team through Sectionals, but those players will not be eligible to play at that level at Nationals.
Any player on their roster that was a 2015 year-end 3.5 but was an early start 3.0 is allowed to continue playing on the team as a 3.0 unless their rating reaches the clearly above level. So Chambers did get to the clearly above level and was DQ'd, the others did not. See http://computerratings.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-side-effect-of-all-2014-usta-league.html where I wrote more about this topic. Thanks did you see my question asking how one of their 3.5 players got to play at nationals?
oh man, how Naïve you are. many of these C rated guys are cheaters. meaning they were bumped up at some point and they appealed down. and were granted because weak co-oridinators that just want to please local teams. So I was looking at the roster of an 8.5 Combo team that we will be playing against. I know most of the 4.5s but not much about the 4.0s so I was looking some of them up on the Norcal site (we have our own site and don't use tennislink).
Turns out one of them played on the 4.0 Adult team that is going to Nationals. That team's roster and record makes for an interesting read!

A few interesting observations:
- There are 3 players on the team who went to Nationals last year. That's the most you can have under the move up / split up rule.
- Large roster
- A healthy dose of self-rates!
- But their most successful players in terms of match wins are C rated
- The team won all 10 regular season matches, dropping only 3 individual matches total
- Both local playoff matches won 5-0
- Won all District and Sectional matches 4-1 or 5-0
- Team is so deep that they played 20 (!!) different players at Sectionals
Ladies and gents, this is how you do it - gather the best C rated players in the area, complement them with some self rates, dominate, and off to Nationals we go!
I don't really know the players on this team so I have no dog in the fight... but just because someone successfully appealed down doesn't mean there is monkey business going on. We have auto-appeals where you appeal via the web site and if you are within a certain threshold the appeal is automatically granted on the spot - no interaction with coordinators or anyone.oh man, how Naïve you are. many of these C rated guys are cheaters. meaning they were bumped up at some point and they appealed down. and were granted because weak co-oridinators that just want to please local teams.
yes I do. I know the players , they have NO business playing in 4.0, these guys are middle 4.5 players. and they went deep into the playoffs and more and they were bumped up. then they appealed......and Voila,,,,,,,,they are 4.0 again..... WOW,,,, they are destroying other team's and other players hopes and dreams of going to playoffs and destroying Lives.......they just don't think about that..........I don't really know the players on this team so I have no dog in the fight... but just because someone successfully appealed down doesn't mean there is monkey business going on. Do you have any specific information about these players, that leads you to conclude that their appeal were via the coordinator, and that the coordinator is biased in some way?
...and destroying Lives.......they just don't think about that..........
the going rate in Norcal is 75 to 100 per match per player plus club membership, court fees and uber rides. probably more for nationals. i guess the captain spent about 10k to win.
e.g. 5 ringers per match (uber ride 50, match fee 80, club fees 20) = 750. Let's say you need to do that for 10 key matches plus travel costs to sectionals, district, and nationals. I think 20k is closer to the real figure.
Ummm, which team are you referring to? You replied to the post on the NorCal 18+ 4.0 Nationals team, and that roster had 3 players that appealed down but none of them played any matches. And just three others that did play this year were 4.5s last year. The rest of the team were 4.0s last year and a few that were 3.5s. I'm not saying all these ratings are legit, just that you must be referring to a different team/section with these claims of inappropriate appeals being granted.yes I do. Playoffs is serious business. What else does one have to live for?Well, ok.
