'Natural Gut Wholesale' Review (Stringing and Play)

ATTENTION: NEVER TENSION HIGHER THAN 53 - 55 lbs!! Come back here later and report on performance. THANKS!!
I did see the packaging state the "ideal" tension is 40-54lbs. I typically go full poly at 48, so with the expected jump in power with gut I thought to start high and go down from there. Will report back after a couple hits.

Around 52 to 53 lbs max is the SAFEST bet, and then to control power, up the tension of (co)poly crosses a bit to maybe 48/49 lbs.

A little over 2 hours of hitting spread across 2 hitting sessions. Strings show a bit of wear and fraying, so we'll see how long this lasts for. Liking the feel that the gut provides and don't feel like I'm losing out on spin coming from full poly. I can probably drop the tension of the gut next time maybe down to 50/48 or 48/45

Damn, I barely got any fraying even after around 50 hours, spread across several months of course, and I play topspin.

See my sig for tensions. Depending on the (co)Poly I do mains @ 46-50 and SynGut crosses @ 48-52.

With this Natural Gut I do M's @ 50-53 and (co)poly X's @ 46-48.

Inherent qualities dictate that Poly is ALWAYS better UNDER 50 lbs, natural gut is always better above 50 lbs, and for premium natural gut that # usually goes up closer to around ~60 +/-.

These strings play like garbage. That is, if you manage to string them without them snapping. You get what you pay for.

If you want to use natural gut but you're on a tight budget, Klip has far better options

Man oh Man o Man... SAME OLE recurring theme on this thread... Been there... Done That!!

SCROLL UP PEEPS!!
I've used and strung these in the past 3 months

I stand by what I said. I've never had an issue with Luxilon, Babolat, Wilson, or Klip Natgut.

Though to their credit, they did offer to replace the half set that snapped while stringing.

PS: for the love of God, don't get the dyed version of this if you are getting it at all and plan on having someone else string it

Never had any problems with the big brands
But neither with NGW
Using this gut now for about 2 years and playing many hours with it daily
I really have no clue how it comes you only can hit for less than 1.5 hours with a this gut ?

I tried 2 times and both times broke the mains around 2 hours mark. Same racket same tension same cross string last around 12h using Wilson or Vs.
I tried the v3 16g natural color.
Makes it easy for you : go for the other brands !

Never had your experience

Otherwise we wouldn't be using it for 2 years . . .

1) You're referring only to: a) "one-off" "experiences", b) narrow/closed-mindedness, c) posters who barely even played with these strings...This applies more so to NGW v4...Cow intestines barely vary, regardless of country, locale, or region...I repeat, folks demeaning & disparaging these strings with little basis are describing mostly "one-off" "experiences", exhibiting narrow

Update 2! About 6+ hours in - strings still intact no random breakage. Mains getting a little notched and fraying is still slight. I'm pretty inconsistent in my hitting area and the fraying definitely proves that. I'll stick with this until it snaps then string the mains lower I want a little better ball pocketing on my shots. Compared to full poly:
Feel is better
Power about the same
Slightly less spin
Directional control seems better

I restring poly cross only ALL the time. No detriment to the racket.
Do you mean you leave the SAME natural gut mains on your racquet, and re-string ONLY poly crosses? How many times do you this and NOT ALSO cut out the mains?

I find that after doing this ONLY ONCE it might be OK, but even so the entire stringbed starts playing kinda whacky, and doing it TWICE is BLEGH!!

I'm still playing V2. 16g natural, string it at 60# with 10% pre-stretch. Hybrid, see below.

Even having success, not sure I'll be buying more as i paid $10/set. And i never had success
with the colored (black). Oops, that was a racist remark, I take it back.

It was a good deal at $10 for me, but not so sure as the price rises. Nonetheless, I'm ok
with using the v2 that i still have. Got half dozen sets or so still, so that's alot of hybrids.

I'll be moving to a name brand, but not top end gut. Pacific Classic has treated me well, as has Klip Legend. Also becoming partial to some of the high end multi's instead of the cheap gut.

Maybe one day I'll treat myself to some premium gut. Maybe...

Heck, maybe it's v3. First version in foil packaging instead of plastic bags.

Well you're south of the Mason-Dixon line where they enjoyed slavery, not to mention smack dab in the bible-belt, so that's pretty much expected.

Yeah, meanwhile there are Trump supporters all across America. All well know racists, correct??

I'm the anitichrist who sleeps with a black woman. Go figure.

At any rate, the dyed string is much more prone to breakage (I've been stringing and using this stuff
in the few earlier versions for about 6 years or so).

Played yesterday with a hybrid with NGW Gut (old V2) on the mains at 23 Kg, and MSV Focus Hex 1.20 @ 21 Kg

Starting the stringing process was HELL since there seemed to be a difference in gauge across the string so I could not grip both strings at center to make that 1st pull before clamping the first time, one of them would simply not be gripped.

anyway managed to do that with starting clamp but ended up severely squishing part of the string and I was afraid it wouln't last that long.

Played a 2,5 hour match (on red clay) and the string played sweet sweet sweet ! great grip and bite on the ball, excellent comfort, touch and feel, power - just so much more complete than fullbed poly.
IN the end the wear shown on the gut mains was minimal...

Plan on playing tournament with it in a couple days - this time synthetic grass.

Played for another 40 minutes on a silica filled synthetic grass... was still sweet... however my opponent was too strong for me and I was skidding on the silica and was not comfortable at all, so tried to change things with other string combos... fullbed poly and very very low tension fullbed poly - still lost :)

On another note, strung another stick with the V4 and 15 gauge black version. Seems generally easier to string and handle but on court (1h light practice) I seem to loose a bit of the grip when compared with the natural V2... otherwise... sweet.

Dredging up an old thread from the past. Apologies for not being able to read through all the comments. A friend recently gave me a half set of NGW to test it out, since I'm a stringer and he's interested to hear what I think of them.

Just strung them up tonight, gut mains with Solinco Hyper-G in crosses, 16g all around, 57 lbs all around. I have a social tennis match tomorrow night, and a league practice Saturday so I'll know how they are by the end of day Saturday (I usually play with Babolat VS).

Anyway, my concern is: it was one greasy string! Stringing it, felt like it was dipped in Crisco first. My hands were oily, my racquet was oily, and my stringing machine was oily. never seen a string like this before.

Anyone else have this experience with this string?

Yes, it has no casing so the oil is so that is doesnt dry out or fray too bad when stringing. Glad you had success stringing it. I was typically good with the 16g but I had trouble with 17g snapping while stringing. That's a problem for me because it takes me a long time to string.

I use the cheaper and lower quality natural guts from PK for classic wood rackets. Will post a picture of my latest product tests of packs from
Elder Gut and New Global Gut ...
Here is one of my latest, it looks and plays nice:

thanks! I played about 6 hours with it so far and it's a very good string. Love playing with it. I don't like the oil, but maybe the value and performance wins out. I'll get a few more packs and experiment.

I've been using it for a while now and each version seems to be getting better. Just got a new racket and plan to string it with V5 17g. I've hurt my arm so I'm planning to string full bed of gut. Not sure what tension to string at. I'm thinking somewhere in the 45 to 50 range. Any suggestions out there???

That's what I string poly with. Gut should be about 10lbs more than this or else it will be a trampoline.

Thanks for the advice!! I'm thinking about going with the low tension to help with the arm. It's feeling better, just don't want to hurt it again in this cooler weather. Maybe I'll try somewhere in the 50 to 55 range.

I string the older stuff, V2 or V3 perhaps?? at 60# no problem in a hybrid.
Also my experience. 60 pounds is comfortable and plenty powerful but feel free to experiment. However, experimenting with these strings cost me a lot of time, but thankfully not a ton of money because Kevin was generous with sending test strings and replacements for the ones that snapped when I put in my next order. However, as we all know, time is money!

I've had it snap on the machine and in the bag, but not often.

I don't sweat it much as it's cheap and i have several rackets.

Having said that, I'm enjoying nicer gut now and likely won't buy much more of this "stuff".

What are you using now? I have seen a lot of people like Klip Legend for $30 a set and it is cased, more predictable, and less prone to randomly snap.

I have strung with a good amount of Klip Legend, both the coated and the uncoated, and the string is easy to string and holds up very nice. Never had a single issue with that brand.

Then, ANY pro player hitting with Nat Gut up to the 70s (at least) hit with garbage playing strings !! I'm talking Rod Laver and company, Billie Jean King and Company....

I do not like the feel or playability of Kilp. I do not have the same results as I do with say Wilson/ Lux git or even Pacific Tough gut , not available now. I just was not impressed with the price fir what I got out of Klip.

I just ordered some. I’ve never had natural gut but my elbow is bothering me for the first time in 35 years of playing tennis. I’m hoping this helps and is easy to string. Playability will also matter!

what? they were playing with premium gut, yes even in the 70's.

What are you going on about?

I've used alot of this cheap gut and it's ok but definitely subpar and not comparable to any of the other NG offerings.

But better than any multifilament? I've heard X1 Biphase by Technifibre is the closest thing to natural gut but even that is far apart. Trying to see how this one compares.

You are correct. The TF Biphase was made to emulate the older VS ribbon Gut that is no longer made however it feels very different. IMHO it stretches more than NG.

Years ago, Winn made a string called Gutex which was essentially a multi with no core. Good string that is a little less stretchy than TF BP.

not entirely sure but premium gut in the 70 was not the same as today's premium gut... the coatings might've not be as good as todays...
I vaguely remember them fraying quite a lot in those days... (I was a kid by then :)

Yes, like a lot of things, premium gut was available in the 70's and in some ways was better than what is available today. VS gut was great and was around $20-25/installed. Granted, the coatings were not the same, but the feel was exceptional.
