"Former tennis champion Martina Navratilova has revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Speaking to US magazine People, she said she had cried after finding out.
"I feel so in control of my life and my body, and then this comes, and it's completely out of my hands," she is quoted as saying by the magazine."

Hope she recovers soon :(

According to the report, her prognosis is excellent. During her career, she won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, nine of them at Wimbledon.

Navratilova, 53, said she was fortunate that the disease had been detected early thanks to a routine mammogram.

"Another year and I could have been in big trouble," she told the magazine.

Navratilova has had a lumpectomy and will begin six weeks of radiation therapy in May, the report says.

get well soon, martina. You are the best.

First I've hear of it, sad to hear. Navratilova is my favorite woman player of all time, I've always enjoyed watching her play. I hope she can beat it.

Good that she was tested as the childless at her age have at least a 50% greater risk. To a full recovery....

Thanks for posting this, Seany. IMO, Martina is one of the best tennis ambassadors, a modern champion who continues giving back to the sport: conducting free clinics in Central Park and campaigning hard on the benefits of nutrition and exercise.

The link you posted states she's already had a lumpectomy and will undergo some radiation therapy, all with an excellent prognosis because of early detection. If anybody can turn this into a positive experience, it's MN and I'm sure I'm not the only one who wishes her a swift recovery and continued life and happiness on and off the courts.

When you hear things like that it only brings it home that it can happen to anyone. Martina is one of the fittest, healthiest women for her age (and in general) around. It really sucks, she was a really great tennis player, and a good person, here's hoping that she recovers.

No joke at all. About 1% of breast cancer occurs in men (who have a tiny amount of breast tissue.) Much more often fatal in men as it spreads so quickly to other structures.

This is horrible, truly horrible. I wish her a successful recovery.

Breast cancer is so unpredictable. Martina is a health nut, but it often doesn't matter. Several women in my family have had breast cancer and a coworker was recently diagnosed.

Again, my prayers will be with Martina, and I wish her nothing but the best.

She's a trooper:

She emphasized that she is cancer-free and has not curbed her activities since the discovery.

She participated in last month's "Hit for Haiti" fundraiser at Indian Wells, Calif., two days before her lumpectomy. She also recently competed in a 25-mile bike portion of a triathlon race in Hawaii.

I had not read the article yet. It's good to know that she's post-surgery. I first thought that her initial surgery was still forthcoming.

That was a courageous thing to do! Putting the welfare of others before herself when she could have certainly decided not to participate. Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery Martina. It's an evil disease.

Let's not be melodramatic about this. It's very nice to do charitable things but she in no way put herself at risk. Susan Sontag's "Illness as Metaphor" is a terrific book about how Tuberculosis in the 19th century and then cancer in the 20th became over-romanticized as something "evil" to battle.

Wow - I don't know whether you are a woman or not - but a diagnosis of breast cancer for any woman (even Martina) is a devastating and frightening thing. I have known many women - including my mother - who dealt with breast cancer - and it takes COURAGE to carry on everyday, let alone go out of your way to think of others. If ever a woman has a right to be self-centered it's when she's fighting breast cancer. "Risk" has nothing to do with it.

Cancer "over-romanticized"? - uh-huh. I hope you never have to face this disease, because you're in for a real shock. And if you have any friends fighting this disease do them a favour and stay away. No one needs to be told they're "melodramatic and over-romancing" the possible loss of a breast or their life - because although statistics are showing encouraging recovery rates - this is still a very insidious and very serious disease.

It is said her cancer is "ductal carcinoma in situ", which is the most common type of NON-INVASIVE breast cancer. So I think with a big chance that she can actually be cured.

Boy. If you're 50-ish, suddenly it seems like everyone you know has or has had breast cancer. What on earth is happening?

Bad water; junk we live in, eat and breath. There are a lot of very complex molecules around out there.

I'll pray for Martina: God what a champion! :)

What's happening mainly is that people have children at much older ages than they did in prior generations and this greatly increases the prevalence of breast cancer.

Very sad news, but the even sadder news was that she hadn't gotten a mammogram in 4 years! Hopefully she can recover from it, stay strong Martina!
