Women could boycott Indian Wells over comments - Martina Navratilova

Martina Navratilova says she would not be surprised if female players boycotted Indian Wells as a result of the row ignited by the tournament's chief executive.

Raymond Moore said the women's game "rides on the coat-tails" of the men and that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal have "carried this sport".

Moore, 69, has since apologised.

But Navratilova, an 18-time Grand Slam winner, says women may not want to play at Indian Wells if he stays in charge.

The 59-year said the views of South African Moore were "really disheartening", "extremely prejudiced" and "very old-fashioned".
"We have made it this far on our own, without help from male players, and will continue to do so in the future," Navratilova added.

"It would be hard to imagine any women to want to go and play at Indian Wells if Moore stays as the tournament director."

Navratilova was also disappointed by comments from world number one Novak Djokovic, who said he believes men should be awarded more prize money than women because it was more popular.

Speaking after his straight-sets win over Milos Raonic in the men's final at Indian Wells, the Serb said women deserve the money they get, but men should fight for more because their game attracts more viewers.

"Novak Djokovic, as much as I love him, clearly doesn't understand why, when women and men play in combined tournaments, they must be paid equally," Navratilova said. "I thought we settled that issue years ago."

World number one Serena Williams said Moore's statement was "offensive", calling it "mistaken and very, very, very inaccurate".

There has been equal prize money in all four majors - the Australian Open, US Open, French Open and Wimbledon - since 2007, as well as at combined Masters events, such as Indian Wells and Miami.

But female players are paid significantly less at women-only events when compared with similar-sized men's tournaments.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) said player equality is a "bedrock" principle and has been extremely critical of Moore.

"There is no place in this sport for antiquated, sexist or uninformed ideologies," read a statement from Katrina Adams, who is the USTA's chairman, chief executive and president.

She added that Moore's remarks "in no way reflect the beliefs of the vast majority of those in the tennis world".

Chris Kermode, chief executive of the Association of Tennis Professionals, called Moore's comments "disparaging" and said they had been "made in poor taste".

Former British Davis Cup captain David Lloyd backed Djokovic's assertion that the men's game was more popular than the women's right now but said the opposite had been true in the past.

Lloyd said the women's game had been "better" to watch than the men's when Steffi Graf and Monica Seles were at their peak in the early 1990s. As a result, the public had been willing to pay more to see them play.

"It's supply and demand and it could swing back in the future," he said.

It's just a way of lobbying for the tournament to be a bigotry free zone, as there will be no boycott. And probably no Moore to boycott.
 
She should do more inverviews like these, would take her out of the announcers booth.

Serena didnt play for 14 yrs, numbers went up. Fed sharapova didnt play, numbers went up. Good luck martina, when the numbers still go up your going to hurt the wta.

Its like when you take the day off and your boss shows up, everything is the same and realizes he doesnt really need you.
 
I guarantee none of these women actually feel personally offended by this whole thing. Most likely if they decide to boycott this event, they're just taking advantage of the situation to opt out of a tournament or just to create a fuss for attention. Makes no difference to me because the only women's match I watch is usually the final.
 
deep pockets will make appearance money/perks hard to refuse. Its only a pro sports game and anyone who is good at it knows time to cash in is limited. Ellison "makes it rain." Some tertiary thanks Moore for his service, kicks him to the curb, hire a new "sensitive" CEO, toss some money around, situation resolved.

Moore's resignation comes one day after he said women players ride the coattails of the men. He later apologized, but his remarks drew widespread outrage.

Moore, 69, is a former professional player from South Africa who took over as CEO of Indian Wells Tennis Garden in 2012, after being associated with the event for decades.

"Ray let me know that he has decided to step down from his roles as CEO and Tournament Director effective immediately," Ellison said in a statement Monday night. "I fully understand his decision."

Yeah, but that would literally be sexism, because you're hiring a person on the basis of their sex / gender, and not their qualifications or abilities to take on the job and its responsibilities.

Not that anyone would call that out if it happened, because remember, only bad things are sexist. Favourable sexism is progress and anyone who says otherwise is a bigot.

Anyway, the original comment was completely unnecessary and only partially-accurate at best.

Nobody will care in a week - whether or not that's helped along by some damage control remains to be seen, but it'll be the case either way.

Good riddance to the lazy women. Their product is crap and I say let them boycott. They are not needed. Stadiums were empty when they played anyway.

Djokovic hasn't stepped down so Raymond Moore has achieved what he wanted.

Djokovic has used his power to make people realise women are on the gravy train, a load of lazy incompetent chancers who while the men work hard on the practice court spend their time posing on Instagram.

Djokovic and Moore are legends. Let the women boycott IW...who cares.

I don't know what you are talking about but Serena Williams' matches in the US always sell out before any of Djokovic's matches and I'm not a fan of either player by the way.

They all don't play 3 of 5. They don't draw as many paying spectators. They are not as good as the men. They don't run as fast, hit as hard, serve as well. Political correctness at its worst.

Ray Moore, as a former ATP player, has a right to state his opinion - not much different than some current ATP players have stated. Ray Moore, as a representative of a tennis tournament, should be fired for speaking negatively and disrespectfully of people who are essentially his contract employees. No employer should stand for that.
By the way, I like the way Serena W. responded in her press conference with facts.
 
Moore's an old man who played 40 years ago! Why take him that seriously? This is ridiculous! It wasn't smart to say in 2016, but I take in consideration the era he grew up in; same with any old bigot! BTW, women don't deserve equal pay; SORRY! Men still run this game! It doesn't help that women are being run over by another old lady; Martina the original "legend" who did the same! ;-)
 
There should be pay equality for both genders for the round they get to in tournaments. This equality also means best of 5 sets matches for women at the 4 majors.

All joint events should have the same prize money for the same round for men's and women's. But the elephant in the room is the women getting equal pay at the majors for only playing best of 3 sets while the men play best of 5 sets. This should not be the case. What should be the case at the majors is either both men and women play best of 5 sets for equal pay according to a given round (which I favour), either both men and women play best of 3 sets for equal pay according to a given round (which would be awful for the men's game), or we have pay inequality in order to keep women's tennis at best of 3 sets in the majors while men play best of 5 sets in the majors. As I said, I personally prefer best of 5 sets at the majors for both men and women, and equal pay.

I don't agree, the women's event historically wouldn't pay the same by itself, but in sharing a facility they can pay out more to the female players I would think... Unfortunately drawing power is dynamic on both sides. Clearly scheduling, promotion, historical value play important roles on both sides. It's also why you can't draw conclusive numbers from "direct" comparisons.

I think that both sides need to start helping out the challengers and futures. I feel the tour is too small at this point and keeps takent down. Tennis needs an expansion outlet somewhere, promotion and funding to go along with it.

For those calling for women to play 5, how are you going to get a days' worth of matches in? The first 2 rounds could take a long time to play. Throw in some rain.... not practical.

Sorry, the number of sets is a strawman. It's the overall product that the men put out that should mean they receive more of the revenue.
