Nothing much, just winning another league MVP and Finals MVP.
Kobe's actually not having a bad season, I'd go as far as to call it a great season. He's just had to deal with catastrophe after catastrophe and Dwight being a total nothing as an impact player.

By the way, Dwight Howard is the most overrated player in the history of professional basketball...
Overrated, hell yes. I wouldn't say he's the MOST overrated player in history.
I think he's overrated because offensively, he's nothing but dunks and putbacks (after how many years in the league now?). On top of being an offensive liability, his inability to knock free throws when they count simply rob his team of possessions.
His defense is good enough, I'll give him that.
They appear to be scrubs because they're playing in a system designed for 25-30yr olds. Not when your main facilitators are older.
Also, it doesn't help that for whatever reason, the Lakers are playing matador defense.
How bout Kyrie last nite! http://www.nba.com/games/20130126/CLETOR/gameinfo.html?ls=iref:nbahpgt
Did I hear right? ESPN just said Rajon Rondo tore his ACL? If that's the case, then the Boston Celtic's season is done, probably next year too.
Edit: Rajon Rondo did indeed tear his ACL.
Garnett is cleaning boards like no other late in the game.
A LOT of tired legs in this Celtics/Heat double OT game.
Westbrook taking shots he shouldn't again. 1/9 for the half.
Celtics are toast. Rondo out for the rest of the year with an ACL. One of my co-workers is a die-hard C's fan, so I'll have to console him.
Kobe with a sick crossover to set up the dagger shot vs Thunder. D'Antoni has a new effective tactic...get Dwight in foul trouble and have him ride the pine until victory is assured!
Its so sad to see such a talented guy like rondo go out. I wish him a speedy recovery. Looks like I won't be seeing him at the All Star Game
How bout JJ Redick, 29 pts, 8-10 3 pointers in the 3rd qtr!
Magic lose for 16th time in 18 games (10 vs teams with losing records) despite Redick's heroics. Curious move by Vaughn, benching JJ early after his hot start...I thought you stay with the hot hand. Pistons went on a 12-2 run after Redick hit the pines. Oh well!
there's a rumor about MJ coming back for 1 game at age 50
I dont believe this, it's impossible
MJ and Gordie Howe, eh?
Great player. Most likely will be traded for a young player or a 2014 pick. I just do not think the Magic can afford his next contract. they can afford it, but it does not fit into their plan of trying to retain and develop as many young talents as possible.
I think JJ would be perfect on the Bulls or Mavericks coming off the bench as a 6th man.
Bulls wanted to sign him a few years ago, but Orlando matched the offer sheet.
you made me google Howe actually...
no seriously, they're talking about a 1 game comeback just for fun
Yep. Not sure if they can do it again this time. JJ may get too much on the open market.
Might as well do it against a scrub team that way they can sell out the arena. Plus thay can sell Bobcats Jordan Jerseys. Or maybe by then they will get the Hornets name back or something.
Bobcats is a terrible name. The only reason they are called that is becasue Robert Johnson at the time who owned the team took the name because it had his name in it.
Gordie came back for fun too. At 70
Playing 80 games for real at age 51 is staggering...surprised Chelios didn't try to match that...the "wimp" retired at age 48!
No one played past 48 cept Howe.
Chelios played 7 game for the trashers in 2010 at 48. They missed the playoffs and he was sent back to AHL team.
Officially retired in August and has ben working for the Red Wings ever since.
Kurt Thomas (and/or Grant Hill if he ever suits up) only has/have four years or so to catch Kevin Willis for oldest modern-day NBA player ever. Some coach in the 40's suited up for one game, missed all his shots and scored two points from the charity line...not worth discussing him.
Bet you would mention Jeff Van Gundy if he suited up!
Warriors... Bogut in, Curry resprain.
Now Bogut is not sure he can play.
He did suit up once...played floor mop during an epic playoff brawl!
Actually, maybe Doc will give it a go as Rondo's replacement!
Memphis took a dump and shipped off Gay.
So Memphis Grizzles essentially traded Rudy Gay for Tayshaun Prince. Looks bad on paper, but they have enough scoring, and Tayshaun Prince is good for ANY team.
I say this is a good immediate fit for the Memphis Grizzles. I won't speak on long term.
Grizzlies made a short-term move IMO. Gay was owed a lot of money over the next two years and the impression was that the Grizzlies can't afford to throw 50+million on three guys. Gasol is untouchable and ZBo is still producing. Gay's having a lousy year and one of the guys they got has comparable numbers to Gay.
I don't know if this really helped or hurt the team. The fact they want to avoid the luxury tax like the plague make me believe management has no faith in them competing for a title this year.
And the hits keep on coming for the Tragic...now 2-18 in their last 20 after a miserable 2nd half @MSG. Add on a broken foot for Big Baby to Affalo's strained calf...we are decimated by the injury bug and this latest one seriously puts Orlando in the running for worst end-of-season record. Tyson Chandler gave us a taste of what to expect from any decent "big"...10 of 11 from the field. Where's the "D"?
I think it's a good move, most teams don't have a perimeter stopper, and now Memphis Grizzles have two perimeter stopper (Tony Allen and Tayshaun Prince). In the Western Conference with its guards, I think it's a good move. We all know Mike Conley is a good point guard, but he can't guard anyone (lack of size, not lack of effort.)
Clippers have 30 at half against the Raptors - yikes. Chris Paul, go lick some deer antlers.
Hoping for a T-wolves win tonight.
Liking how the Pacers are handling the Heat as of this post.
Cleveland has 4 players in the Rookie game. 1st time any team had that many. And they get another lottery pick next year. May soon become the Lake Erie Monsters instead of the mistake by the lake.
The Cookie Monster is back!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SubRvg5OFzo
Rockets tie the NBA record for 3's (23) in routing GSW 140-109! It was a team effort with eight players in double digits, led by Linsanity's 28.
On the flip side, the Tragic couldn't match those 69 points by the Rockets long-range artists in losing to Philly 78-61 on the previous night. We now have our second double-digit loss skein this season. The good news...the Clips come to town and, ironically, they were nice enough to allow Orlando a victory in LA to stop the last 10-game skid. Could it happen again???
Spurs win 11 in a row. They always seem to make runs like this every year. Pops rest dudes regardless and they still win. No other coach in the league will rest his horses even if it is needed rest. I really think he is the best coach ever at manging a bench and players minutes. phil jackson never really had to worry about. You dont have to Sit MJ and Pippen. Kobe was the same way. Shaq usually got his rest from foul trouble.
Yep, and David Stern still feels he needs to put his nose in the Spurs business and fine Pop for doing what he felt was the best thing to do when he rested his players. Pop doesnt need any advice from Stern on how to run his team.
LOL!!! That's not right man.
then you have thibs in chicago who has probably shortened each of his players life spans by ten years.
This is the greatest Magic season in a long time for me and I will explain why:
We are tanking but playing all the young guys for development.
We have a plan. No more diva stars. A real team built with talented young guys.
This means we will be able to resign most of them. Yes, now and then we will lose a guy like OKC lost Harden, but we can S&T them for more draft picks and youth/expirings so the cycle continues.
We already have a franchise C in Vuc. We have a great backup PF in Nicholson. Stud SF 6th man/defender type in Harkless. Potential backup C in Oquinn (very physical player, hustler. Great attitude. Will end up replacing Big Baby if/when we trade him). Athletic wing with potential in D Jones (super cheap contract too).
So basically we need to get starters. We should be in the top 5 so we can get a starter there this year. I think Shabazz/Mclemore/Noel/Smart will be NBA starters.
Next move will probably be to trade JJ for a draft picks or a player that expires in 2014. I fully expect to suck again next year, but I also think the magic will try and get more 2014 picks as well.
After the 2014 draft, the Magic will have tons of $$ to go after a top FA and fill out the starting lineup. The guys this year will be developed and playing at a much higher level. The magic will most likely be a low seed playoff team by then and in 2015 will be back in regular contention. In 2014, the Magic should have a shot to draft a guy like Wiggins who IMO should be the next Durant. 2014 draft is very very deep.
Anyway, that is why this season is so successful to me. We finally have a killer front office with a plan that works for small market teams.
he is the best at finding gems no one else noticed like parker, manu, splitter, etc.
but to phil's credit no one managed stars and their egos better than him.
Its aklot easier to deal with ego when you three peat every 5 years.
I dont want to come off as being anti Phil Jackson. He is the man, but I still think Pops gets more out of his players top to bottom than any other coach in my lifetime. Si I cant really commment on Aurbach and thos old dudes. But part of me thinks that Celtics dynasty had to do witht he leadership and defensive abilty of one Bill Russell than any specifi skill that Aurbach possesed. But All great coaches have had great players as well.
I guess its like a catch 22
"Greatest Magic season in a long time"???
We're only a few seasons removed from an NBA Finals appearance, so I have to disagree. I can symphasize with the notion we're headed in the right direction by jettisoning D12, his enormously selfish ego and huge contract. Other than that, I gain no confidence from the "progress" made this year. I fear a culture of defeatism could spring forth from these losing binges...losing begets an expectation that something will always go wrong. It's happening this year...look at the huge rash of injuries as the first example of things going from bad to worse.
All great teams are driven by at least one "straw that stirs the drink". Right now, we've got a lot of drink but no straw. It's gonna be a fine line management and the coaches will walk to keep "the plan" on track if and when we import through the draft or free agency the necessary straw. Until that happens, I expect a lot more losing than winning. Unfortunately, there are a lot more "Dwights" out there than there are "Tims.
