Of the two bona fide superstars to go down with the dreaded injury, Dominique is the better case scenario parallel for recovery for KD. He had the injury when about a year and change older than KD and was CPOY when he returned but changed his style to a more perimeter oriented offensive player. Kobe came back and was a shell of himself until that very last game of his career but he was two years older (almost 34) than Wilkins.

Two younger guys (Gay and Matthews) have returned in the last few years from the Achilles. They’re not busts since returning but in their less key roles are not a good comparison to the load KD will accept starting in ‘20-‘21.

I think he would be wise to stay with GSW so he doesn’t have to be “the man” from Day 1 of his return, That and the extra $50million or so should be enough to overcome any bad Green vibes if GSW decides to try and retain Draymond beyond ‘19-‘20.
Agree the idea of KD staying makes tons of sense, but I feel like he wants (or feels he has) to be "the man" some where else. I think he was a little put off when he wasn't as welcomed around the league despite 2 finals MVPs. The media in a way has forced his hand to go somewhere else and do it as the true #1 guy. I just have a feeling the Knicks are where he ends up.

I don't mind Kemba in BOS but they would be better served by just setting Tatum and Brown loose and finding a skilled big man like Vucevic. Starting 5 like Smart, Tatum, Brown, Heyward, Vuc would be pretty good and I still Brad is a great coach. Either situation is better than Kyrie who just doesn't seem to mesh with teammates well at all.

The Unibrow is going to sacrifice the $4million difference and sign before the expiring contract to help helpless Palinka recruit a proven third wheel. The Butler now enters the scene from Stage Left, uttering the line, “My lord LeBron, should the alley oop feed your left or right hand?”

I’m trying to imagine the $$$ impact these uberearners must evaluate.

By leaving, Kemba Walker is giving up a lot on his first and probably last maxman deal.

Also, KD must mull over some sum north of $50million in “loss” through lesser gain that he would sacrifice if GSW isn’t his choice.

Now, The Unibrow could sign later than sooner and earn $4million more than his timing now allows him to earn.

Unfortunately, from my perspective as a mere mortal, even the $4million AD is now willing to sacrifice for “team spirit” would be a fortune to finance stringytom enterprises LLC.

LeBron's 1st assist to AD is No. 23, sources say
3:32 AM BST

LBJ is giving up his uniform number, 23, to new Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.
Davis has worn No. 23 for seven years as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans.

Kawhi + LeBron + AD would be fun to watch. They may or may not dominate as much as people think; it all depends on the chemistry.

If Kawhi wants to leave Toronto for L.A., he needs to pick the Lakers over the Clippers. Lakers are still the glamour team.

New Balance has ordered Kawhi to go with the Lakers. Follow the shoes.

In Kembas case there appantly was no supermax. Charlotte reportedly low balled the heck of him. And probably right fully so. They were never better than a 1st exit with him and on a max they would have even less. Best for both parties to part in this case.

GSW could potentially work a sign and trade and KD would still get the super mega-max to go to.

LeBron has probably already promised AD he will make that 4 mil back and more through royalties off of Space Jam 2 and other projects from his production company.

Trying to figure out why KD wouldn't take the sign and trade with the Warriors. Rehab with the Warriors and then request trade to Knicks/Nets next year if he so chooses.

There seems to be no downside, from KD's point of view, to this.

Only thing I figure is that the Knicks/Nets are pressuring him to sign with them now as a free agent. They have to give up nothing if KD signs now.
If KD does a sign and trade with Warriors, the Knicks/Nets would have to give up something for KD next year.

The Knicks and Nets would also be paying KD less if he signed with them directly. I know it’s one less year and I’m pretty sure the annual value is also significantly less than a super max. A sign and trade isn’t attractive at all for these two teams. Why pay kd more and give up assets for him if he wants to go to one of these two teams? I can’t see it happening. It’s a win win for kd, best case for warriors if kd doesn’t want to be there, but not a great option for kd’s future team.

All of my offseason predictions have backfired so far so we’ll see

Yes, A sign and trade is not attractive to the Knicks/Nets. Great for KD.
If the Knicks are as desperate for KD as everyone says, KD needs to re-sign and rehab with the Warriors.
Won't the Knicks still be there waiting for KD next year? Or will they have moved on to another player?

An argument can be made that AD will recoup the $4M in endorsement value if his sacrifice results in the Lakers picking up a title or two.

Is this a subtle way of saying I'd come if, only if, Magic is the man 'cuz I [Kawhi] don't trust Pelinka?

Magic: Kawhi requested I attend Lakers meeting
1:41 PM BST Ramona ShelburneESPN Senior Writer

Magic Johnson says he received word that Kawhi Leonard had an interest in speaking with him as the free agent prepares to meet with the Los Angeles Lakers but that he is not permitted by NBA rules to be part of official team meetings with prospective free agents.

Leonard, who is expected to speak to the Lakers in the next few days, had made a personal request that only owner Jeanie Buss and Johnson, the team's former president of basketball operations, be involved in the meeting, sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith on Friday.

Johnson told ESPN he has not been asked by the Lakers or Buss to participate in free-agent pitches but that he will help the Lakers in free agency in any way he can.

"A friend of mine called and says Kawhi wants to meet with you," Johnson told ESPN on Friday. "I said no problem. I'm available if that's what this man wants."

Because the league has specifically told the Lakers that Johnson can't be a formal part of the free-agency process, Los Angeles has made no attempt to engage Johnson formally, league sources said.

However, there has been regular communication between Johnson and the Lakers about how he can be helpful to them informally, as he no longer works for the team and is free to have any relationships with current players.

"I got a great life. I want to stick to that great life," Johnson said. "I'm not trying to mess with anybody's job."

Johnson said he wants to help the Lakers, and specifically LeBron James because he recruited him with the promise of building a championship-caliber team in Los Angeles together. Johnson stepped down as the Lakers' president of basketball operations on April 9.

"He signed knowing I was here," Johnson said of James. "That we had a plan. He knew he had a big brother in me as well. He could run things by me. He can still do that."

James has made it clear to the Lakers that he would be enthusiastic about attending the meeting with Leonard if the organization thinks it would be helpful, sources said. Johnson said he thinks there is mutual respect between the two players.

"Everyone forgets. [Leonard] played with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili," Johnson said. "He's played with multiple superstars. He's been one of the guys on a team like that."

Anthony Davis, whose trade to the Lakers won't be completed until the moratorium ends, can act only on his own behalf. Davis cannot act as an official representative of the Lakers in a free-agent meeting.

Johnson said he has left messages for Buss but hasn't heard back from her on the request from Leonard to meet with him.

"Whatever she wants to do, I'm fine with it," Johnson said. "Everyone at this point just wants the Lakers to be good, and it's from her leadership.

"I don't know if last year or two years ago she would have made these moves. But now she is really incredibly involved. She's aggressive and making the moves she needs to make. She's stepped up big time. I'm so proud of her."

Leonard did not opt into the final year of his contract with the Toronto Raptors, making him an unrestricted free agent.

He is expected to allow the Raptors to make the final presentation among the teams meeting with him in Los Angeles next week, league sources have told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The incumbent often prefers to go last in trying to convince a player to stay with the team.

Leonard was named NBA Finals MVP after helping Toronto win the franchise's first championship in his first season with the team. He was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the San Antonio Spurs last summer.

I'm sure sneaker contracts have some sort of kicker if they sign with a team like the Knicks or Lakers. All the money he gave up, he will make back if he signs here. Not that I really am pining for him now that he had this achilles. It would get the Knicks back on the map... in a year or 2. Even though I don't trust the Knicks luck if he does come here. Him going to Brooklyn will steal a lot of shine for RJ and the Knicks going forward.

Absolute NO for sign and trade. F right off, Warriors.

12 hours out from first possible FA announcements and here are your locks:

1. Kemba Walker is headed to Boston for 4/$124million

2. KT is staying with GSW at 5 years/$190million.

Almost certain: Kyrie is leaving Boston for the Nets but he needs a Batman to his Robin to seal the deal. D’Angelo Russell will be moved by Brooklyn to make way for Flat Earther Irving and Woj says LAL is the likely destination. That would end Kawhi to LAL speculation.

Totally random outcomes: where do KD, Kawhi head and is it together?

Let’s just say i will be shocked if leonard signs with the fakers. I just don’t see him as the type to sign with a guy who likely will get all the credit if they win. His best move would be the clippers and bring butler with him. They have some pieces in clippers land already.

NYK officially second worm in The Big Apple.
IIRC, when I was living in New Jersey. The Knicks were playing at MSG with "Earl the Pearl" and Walt Frazier. What great teams.
The Nets were in New Jersey but were still commonly called the NY Nets despite official NJ Nets, playing in the Rutgers University arena..Nets will always be a NJ team to me.
.. Amazing that the largest market NYC has had such pathetic management and poor Knicks teams since then.

The Nets were in the ABA back in the days of the Knicks prime and actually played only one year as the New Jersey Americans before relocating to Long Island as the New York Nets and playing in several venues before settling into Nassau Coliseum in 1972. They then won two ABA titles in ‘74 and ‘76 behind Dr. J before accepting merger into the NBA. The ransom they were forced to pay to the NYK was the cause for them sending Erving to the Sixers and part of the deal was a forced relocation to New Jersey in 1977, supposedly insulating NYK from territorial encroachment. By then, the core of their championship team were either retired, traded or well past prime.

Not so fast there...GSW and Brooklyn may arrange a sign-and-trade deal with KD and Russell that will allow that extra year Durant cannot sign for without a deal. If it doesn’t happen, then KD will earn virtually the same amount per season, just one year less in length.

KD’s good friend DeAndre Jordan will be moving to Brooklyn on a two-year deal.

The Magic lock up Vucevic for 4 years/$100million and Terrance Ross for 4 years/$54million.

The Heat and Sixers will do a sign-and-trade involving Jimmy Butler so that’s another compadre removed from the Kawhi speculation for a running mate in LAClipperland.

In Milwaukee, Mirotic is returning to Europe but Middleton got a big ($170million) contract, George Hill extended for a couple of years. There is talk Brogdon may sign and then be traded to Indiana.

Boston is interested in Kanter to help fill Horford’s departure.

Tobias Harris is a happy, rich man staying in Philadelphia.

I know I’m leaving something out but this sh11t is fuqing crazy!

KD will still go to Brooklyn in the sign-and-trade but Russell will head to GSW and it then frees up KD to get a fifth year on his deal. GSW will also get trade exception relief on their cap money.

So in that scenario, KD leaves nothing on the table; would then end up earning the same over 5 years with Nets as he would have with GSW over 5 years? I had thought the salary rules incentivize players to stay with current team.

Knicks are smart. Did not want to pay injured player the max.

ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Wojnarowski reported a reason Durant may have looked past the Knicks, noting that owner James Dolan and the team "were not prepared to offer Kevin Durant a full max contract due to concerns over his recovery from the Achilles injury."

Kawhi could do it with the Clippers. LeBron with the Lakers.
Still an outside chance they could both do it together with the Lakers.
