The NCAA individual tournament this year shows that just because a player has more ATP points that does not mean he is the better player. Cressy ATP 313 and Challenger winner lost 4,2 to Botzer (no ATP, ITF world 1486 which might get him into the Qualis of a $15K outside the US w/o WC). Galarneau of NC State who gets WCs into Canadian Challengers lost 4,2 to Nuno Borges. Galarneau has an ATP ranking of 392 while Borges has an ATP ranking of 652 as he only has one ATP point from reaching the finals of one $25K last year-which would only get him in the Qualis of $25Ks this year. Borges won several $15Ks last year. I hope the rumors are true that ITF/ATP/WTA will get rid of the two separate ranking systems, and players will be able to earn ATP points in $15ks and $25Ks, and earn their way into Challenger Qualis again. There is supposed to be an announcement this month. Too bad talented college players-both US and international-aren't able to get into $25Ks or sometimes even $15K Qualis unless they have connections for a WC. Last year many collegians who played NCAA individuals at Wake hung around (or came back) and played the two $25K Winston Salem Future plus other collegians who didnt play NCAAs played at the Quali level. The first Wake Future last summer probably had the highest level of college players in the main draw-I think 26 of the 32 were either current, graduated or rising freshmen college players. It was almost like a European club circuit with Wake NCAAs, 2 $25K Futures followed by an ITA summer circuit at Wake Forest that drew some of the Future Quali players.
Maybe more top international players would stay around for NCAA individuals-even if they know they cant get US Open WC- if they knew they could get in summer US Futures like last year. Even if the rules change, collegians who played summer Futures last year may drop their 2018 summer ITF world and/or ATP points before revisions go into effect. For US players, the winner of the NCAAs gets a WC into a Challenger MD (as well as US Open WC?), the finalist gets a WC into a $25K MD, and the semifinalists get WCs into the Qualis of a $25K:

Now last year collegians without any points or national rankings had a chance to get in $25K Future Qualis, qualify, and earn ATP points-would be great if those opportunities were restored.
