Hey NCAA tennis scholars among us,

the last team rankings before the bracket comes out on the 29th came out today (https://www.itatennis.com/ITA/Resul..._National_Team_Rankings_-_April_23__2019.aspx)

I believe, typically, the rd of 16 is 1 v 16, 2 v 15, ... 8 v 9

do we expect that to stay the same with the initiation of super regionals this year?
or is there any indication that travel will be taken into consideration when paring teams 9-16 with 1-8?

if travel is a non-factor, the pairings are
ohio st - columbia
texas - illinois
wake - stanford (ouch, feddie, travel cross country to get bounced before lake nona)
uf - ucla (i'll take ucla traveling across the country, instead of a third matchup with a steadily improving tennessee team)
uva - tennessee
baylor - a&m (the texas showdown)
miss st - unc (awesome matchup)

Wake is nowhere near as strong as they were last year, and Cardinal are vastly improved team hungry for the NCAA title. you guess the result in this situation.

4-1 WF, but are you sure that the Cards will even make it to R16? Let’s not talk about last year.

Appreciate the early potential match up prognostications mikej.
It may not matter but there are several conference tournaments this weekend whose results may affect the pairings you list. (i.e. Big Ten and Pac12 tournaments)
The ITA rankings won't be released publicly until May 2, but the NCAA tournament seeds and pairings should include results of those remaining conference tournaments.
Some team results that could affect the top 16 seeds for NCAA tournament are USC, Stanford, UCLA, Ohio State, Illinois.
Don't count out another team because with a couple upsets the host of B1G tournament Michigan could earn enough points to make top 16.

Interesting, yeah I knew there was some tennis left to be played in some conferences, didn’t know seeds might be based off an unreleased set of rankings

Probably some potential for a UF-Tenn round 3 after all, in that case, if UCLA or Stanford were to move up

I need Southern Cal to charge through the Pac-12 Tourney. If they win it, it could be enough to move my boys up to 16 so that we host mens and womens rd of 64/32. Their increased strength of competition if they win could help us out.

Edit: Just checked rankings again, a first round loss by Stanford or UCLA would be nice as well. We're on the bubble at 17.

How would that impact South Carolina? Didn’t Southern Cal beat South Carolina?

SOS calculation. If Southern Cal runs through their tourney and beats two teams a head of us it'll help.
USC has 37.442 and Columbia 44.649 points. There is no chance that You move up because of USC. It would be possible if you would have beaten southern cal and that way it boost your wins record. But because you lost to southern cal, that won’t help you anything. The difference is too big.

Agreed, that 16/17 gap too big for this weekend to matter.
