need serve speed stats!

  1. i am doing an exponential growth project for my hnrs. algebra II class (yeah, it's great fun) and i was going to do either the average serve speed per year or the highest serve per year/. i know both of those don't change much in one year but i'm thinking i could use three or five year increments and it would be good enough/. i don't know when they have started to keep serve speed stats but i will take any/. thanks much/. goodbye

    Don't know of any sites that keep serve statistics for past years... The Grand Slams all have statistics from the latest tournament, but I don't know where to find data further back.

    The ATP doesn't have a standardized radar gun, so no accurate comparison can be made to serve speeds from 5 years ago. There are a lot of silly readings today(ex. Agassi, Coria, Hewitt hitting 130) that wouldn't have been possible with the radar guns of the 90s. Agassi has even joked about it.
    Baseball has always had a standard radar gun & pitchers aren't throwing any faster today than the 60s.

    Regardless, I don't think serve speeds are an example of exponential growth.

    Try bacterial growth cultures, or viral titre numbers, nuclear fission, poplulation growth, the flu epidemic of 1918, fractals, CFC degradation of ozone, spreading the word about a new album release....

    Ivanisevic hit the fastest serve in 1994 at 136 mph
    Philippoussis had the mark then, with 142.3
    Then Rusedski, with 149
    At last, Roddick, with 155.

    Taylor Dent's 144 mph is the fastest at Wimbledon, and Guccione's 144 is the fastest at AO.
