Need to buy a new suit...

Its time for me to buy a new suit. It's been about 7 years since I last bought a suit and I'm in the market. What are the style out there right now. In the past I know 3 and 4 button suits were in style but it appears that 2 button suits are back again. I personally am a fan of the 3 button but they seem to be few and far between. Are my observations off?

Ladies, feel free to chime in here too. What types of suits do you think men look best in?

Stores generally carry what's in style. Go to a decent men's store or men's department and all will be fine.

definitely get a 2 button, its classy, traditional (but not dated) and will still be in fashion in 5, 10, 20 years time. Depends what it is for, as to the colour. Dark for formal wear, navy or grey or even black. Sleeves should show half inch of shirt sticking out. Good fit is essential, many off the rack suits can hang wrongly unless you are very very lucky. Consider a tailor if you are willing to pay more.
Trousers should rest nicely on shoes, with just a single ruffle in the crease. No turn ups for the trousers. No pleats for the trousers either.

If tailored your probably wont need a belt as you can choose not to have belt loops, but off the rack suits will have loops, its no drama. Never wear braces.

material depends on the climate where you live, wool is normally good for most climates, the quality of the material varies widely. Not sure if i can remember the numbers but i think decent material starts at about 100 (its some kind of measure of quality of weaving) and 140's are great, about 200 or so you are talking very expensive stuff.

On the cuff, 3 or 4 buttons are fine, they will be sewn on, but tailored suits will have real button holes, off the racks wont.

as for vents, i prefer single or double vent, either is classy, Armani do no vents, and its quite the italian thing, but not my taste. Try to get a look at how the suit hangs on your back, that will tell you if it fits well, it should hang nicely, with no folds or gathering of the material.

for 2 buttons only do the top button if you need to do a button, never both, and when done, there should be no creases or gathering of the suit at the front.

Just try to find good Italian suit. As simple as that. I went to JosABank and the only decent quality suit had 5 stars or something like that. They also had 1 and 3 stars but the quality was terrible. Maybe you should try off5th. Oh, and material should be wool. You do not want to look like a gangsta rap star in cr4ppy polyester :)

I'm still waiting for double-breasted suits to come back into fashion because I've got a closet full of them. Or maybe I should just donate them to David Letterman?

Ermenegildo Zegna... two button... unless you are 75" or taller do not get a 3 button suit, it will make your torso look even shorter.

Jacket - Notch lapels, not peak.

Trousers - No pleats, no cuffs.

Have fun. ;)

I'm waiting for someone to tell you that you need to spend $1000s, or that the only suit worth buying is tailor-made from scratch (saw this advice in another thread recently).

Prog gave some good advice, and certainly as others have said, Wool is the go.

As for fit: even if you can't find something perfect, you can have an off the rack suit tailored to fit you for surprisingly little money, and the fit can end up looking fantastic.

Men's warehouse. Sale representatives are going to help you out for this. Just be careful what they might ask you to buy at a store. All the best. -Tina

fitted (not necessarily bespoke). and two buttons only. must have vents (side vents preferably).

those are your only rules for a decent suit. now, what kind of fabric you get depends on your price rang, but look to spend at least $500 for a quality suit, unless you can spot a good deal.

don't ask the ladies about suits; it's not like cologne or whether you should get a tan. it's a suit.

Absolutely no cuffs! Cuffs just do not belong here :)
Maybe it is a good idea to google for Armani and Versace suits and you will know everything you need to know in 10 minutes :)

Just make sure it fits you properly. That is absolutely the most important thing with a suit.

A $50 suit that fits you properly will look better than a $5000 suit that doesnt.

Noooooooooo! You cannot be serious! He didn't say he was 86 years old. Pleats and cuffs!

I would expect an 86 year old man to wear pleats and cuffs. All kidding aside, it's just personal taste.

Me personally (I'm 30 years old) and I don't like pleats and cuffs on my pants. Short people should defintely not have cuffs on their pants though. No cuffs give the illusion of having longer legs (i.e. being taller).

Pleats are just a way for the tailor to charge you for more fabric. ;)

Someone also mentioned vents, good idea (side or single doesn't really matter). There was a guy in my office who wore suits with no vents at all on the jacket... it looked very strange.

Bespoke isn't the only suit worth buying - but it'll be far and away the best - because it'll be uniquely yours.

Once you go bespoke you don't go back! :)

This is true for me, i have some bespoke suits and love them, they last a long time too, the only other suits that compare for me are the high end italian suits that tend to cost more than bespoke. But if you can get a good tailor, and do pre-fittings (crucial !!!!!) then i would prefer to choose a good cloth and good tailor and spend that way rather than an off the peg expensive designer suit.

Off the rack suits really struggle to satisfy in the same league, depends how much you want to spend and how important it is to look GOOD as opposed to looking ok.

I agree.

It depends on your build, but I'm athletically built, and pleats take away some of the V shape I try so hard to maintain.
