Never tried a poly; Pro Supex Big Ace

New User
Hi guys, been a lurker here for years, never posted.
I'm thinking of getting Pro Supex Big Ace 17.
I've never hit with a poly.

Currently using Head RIP Control 17 59lbs with LM Radical.

I read here that I should lower my tension with a poly.............

any insight is appreciated

cheers

Even though Big Ace is a new generation (i.e. softer) co-poly, I'd definitely drop the tension on your first go with that type of string. I believe the LM Radical has a pretty dense stringing pattern so you should initially start with a tension in the bottom range of your racquet's recommended tension. The feedback from the initial string setup will act as barometer for fine-tuning your preference (i.e. increasing/lowering tension, using a hybrid). Hope that helps.

I strung my LM Radical MP with Big Ace Micro (1.15) mains at 55 and Pro Supex Titan 1.25 crosses at 59 on a Alpha Revo 4000 crank. The initial Dynamic Tension (ERT 300) immediately after stringing was 40. One day later with no hitting the DT was 38. After 2hrs of hitting the DT was 37. It has stayed at 37 since. You might want to allow for the initial tension loss. I have a Flexpoint Heat strung with BA 1.22 and Titan and I like the BA micro better.

Head RC 17 is a low powered string with a muted feel. In a LM Rad (MP I assume), it would give a cushioned response.

The Pro Supex Big Ace 17 (1.25mm) would also be lower powered, with a stiffer feel. I agree that you should consider thinner Big Ace -- 1.22mm or even better 1.15mm. Should work fine around 53-56lbs in a dense pattern control frame such as the LM Rad MP. If you are using the OS version, add 3 - 5 lbs.

Yeah it's a MP.

There's a guy, ideally for me, located in Toronto who sells Pro Supex Big Ace on ****, but he only has 1.25mm. So for right now I'm limited to the 17g until I see how a poly feels

it might not be real if it is from Toronto. Just becareful when buying from the bay.

Why would you say that?
He has a good rating. $8 is not much to take a chance.

are there counterfeit Supex strings floating around?

cheers

If he has a good rating then it is okay. I am just telling you. I have seend poly plasma look alike from italy that are "fake poly plasma " strings but never Big Ace. Just don't buy racquets from e b a y especially if the seller is from china.

One thing that is weird:

His **** store consist mostly of pens/office supplies and a small number of tennis items, all Pro Suplex........

i used to play wth multi's like NRG2 and X1 BiPhase... i switched to BA, looking for something a touch crisper and better tension maintenance... I love it. it is comfortable, doesn't move, easy enough to string, has a touch of power and very good control.... never had a problem with it, never broke a string!

go for it!... read up more on the Pro Supex Initial Hit thread on this forum...loads of good stuff, and those there can direct you where to buy the string!

:)

I will not tell you whether or not to buy.. it is your choice. But like I said becareful. Better to buy from an authorized place anyways.

Sadchel, email me at heddins@nc.rr.com and I can point you in a good direction for pro supex. You can email me direct or send it thru talk tennis.

You should try out the 1.22 or the 1.17. The 1.17 is my fav BA right now.

You might be in luck as I'm located in Toronto as well. I have Big Ace in the 1.22 & Micro version in addition to a variety of Pro Supex line of strings. If you're so inclined...post an email and I'll see about setting you up.

Thanks, but I found Strings Depot Plus' e*** store. I ordered 2 sets of the Big Ace 1.25.

I just put new HEAD RIP Control 17's on my LM Rad, when the Big Ace get here I'll be tempted to cut the RIP's out.:-?

I've enjoyed poly (Lux TiMO) in my LM Rads for a year or two and I'd agree that you should drop the tension, it really is necessary.

(Recently have struggled with another poly, SPPP 16L, but there could be other reasons for my TE problems.)

Poly inside the 18x20 of the Rad is a good combination, and yes I've had Head RIP control in as well. You're going to find it an amazing difference, should be real good for your game. If you string yourself you shouldn't find it too costly to cut out the other ones.

Reckon you could have bought off the nice folk here rather than off the Bay, you were given two offers here and didn't take them when you could have got further string advice from them - better to make a friend than save some money...

NO, I don't string myself. I pay $15 labor for stringing. So durability is a concern for me.
Currently at 59lbs.

how low do you suggest I go?

cheers

Actually I didn't see the offers until now. I did take PROTENNIS63's advice and not order from the local Toronto dealer. From what I read, I figured Strings Depot Plus was good.

I just emailed PED for his suggestions.

54 or even, gulp, 52.

10% of 59 is = 5 or 6lbs and so you are down to 54 or 53.

It's funny isn't it, that there are recommendations for an LM Rad to just stick with syn gut... I reckon you just cannot taste what all those TV commentators (and shall we also mention the No. 1 player in the world) are saying caused a revolution in the game in the last few years until you try poly.

I mean you have to try it.

(Don't mind me, at the moment I have a bout of TE but I'm not about to blame racquet or string. Rather blame technique and other contributory factors - lifting problems.)

I don't think you'll think that much of RIP control afterwards even if you don't stick with poly...

No problem; Strings Depot is a quality retailer and ships pretty fast to Canada.
However, if it's not too late to change your order...I'd strongly consider changing your order to Big Ace in the 1.22 or Micro gauge. I strongly agree with a previous poster's opinion that the thinner version offers better feel, playability, and softness (I use a full BA Micro in K90's).
I think "bertrevert's" opinion on tension is a good starting point. I typically string my K90's @ 52/50 with full setup of BA Micro. I get about 10-12 hours out of the setup before cutting them out as a result of tension loss.
