New balance 996v5

What shoe did you switch to or use normally?
Hey JOSHL, I switched to the Lacoste Ultra LG23, been through about 6 pairs since they started being sold. Love them! They also have the cushion die for me at about the 5-6 week mark. The sole does die at about the 4 week mark though for me so it works out versus having a shoe with dead cushion with tons of thread left.

I have a pair of the Mizuno Enforce Tours that I dabble with and an Asics Gel Res 9 sitting in a box. Definitely not speed shoes, but Im starting to shift towards less speedier shoes with more cushion cause knees haha.

How many court hours are you clocking that the cushion goes dead at the 6-week mark?

Let us know how it feels in about 2-4 weeks. At about the 3 week mark, my cushion began to die, big cuts or landings were heavily felt in my heels.. I am a big dude by my own standards 200lbs though too, so maybe thats why.
Same thing happened to me and I'm only 160lbs. After a few weeks of playing with 996v5 my knees are starting to hurt badly. I play mostly doubles so jumping, stopping and quick switches of direction are part of my game. The 996v5 are no longer providing enough cushion and are transferring all the shock to my legs and knees now. They died way too fast.

I'm exploring a new brand of shoe after I played with K-Swiss for the last 5 years and I just finished my stack. And unfortunately they ruined their Ultrashot line - too tight and bad fit around my toes.

depending on the week, but I would say avg 15-20 hours per week.
Damn, I would still hope they last twice as long even with those high weekly hours. Especially for the price.

Too bad that this sounds like a trend with the fuelcell foam in the 996. I'd be curious how the fresh foam in the CT-Rally holds up for you both

Fresh Foam definitely more durable than Fuel Cell. Fuel Cell notorious for going dead pretty quick. For me, Fuel Cell is the more comfortable feeling foam but FF X has better energy return. I've said for awhile now that I just want NB to mash up all their shoe tech into 1 shoe and use FF X in the heel, Fuel Cell in the forefoot and toss in the Energy Arc carbon plate from the CG1.

As it stands, the 996 is best suited to being a match day only shoe while the CT Rally is better suited for day in day out pounding, especially if you're a high level player/mover.

I had followed this because I loved my New Balance 796 v3’s but couldn’t find them anywhere in my size anywhere. I now see there is a 796 v4 out with a sole much more like the 996. Has anyone seen these in person?

With a price tag of $200 on Amazon, this is huge jump from the budget v3.

Played four or five matches in these now and I still quite like them.

I have to have my laces super tight though, otherwise my heel does move around in the shoe a bit too much. The tongue is padded and soft so it's not a problem to have the laces super tight. I think I would also prefer it if the heel was not so round. I don't hate it but it feels a bit weird sometimes.

No visible signs of wear and tear, which is good. I am playing on clay though, so I would have been surprised if that wasn't the case. Hope they come out with more clay colours next season!
How is the sole for clay? is it grippy enough?

Anyone add heel inserts to prevent slippage?

The sole is grippy enough, yes. I'm used to the clay outsole on Adidas shoes and the outsole on these was fine for me, even grippier if anything. Was a little bit more difficult to slide from side to side on the baseline in these.

Overall, I like them quite a lot. If they release another clay outsole 996v5 for this year's clay season I'll be looking to buy myself a pair.

Thank you for your reply! One more thing, size-wise, when I am wearing US12 in my Nikes (vapor pro and others) , what should I go for in the NB?

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with Nike tennis shoes so I can't compare the sizing of the two. I wear the same size with NB shoes (US 10.5) as I do with Adidas though if that helps.

I think this is a tough question as it depends on your foot type. I wear a 13 in Nike Vapor Pro 1, Asics, Lacoste and New Balance. NB is noticeably wider for a width D than most shoes I have worn recently. The 996 was definitetly not a glove fit and I typically saw I have an in between D and 2E foot type. Took me about 2 hours for my feet to settle in and then it was...a great shoe until the cushion gave out.

The foam they use for 996 does not last long if you are a bit heavier. reference I am 190cm or about 6 ft 3 inches at 195-200lbs depending on the day.

I use something like this in my Asics Gel Res 9. They help a lot but they bleed whatever color onto my ankle braces/socks when I take off my shoe. Maybe I should buy sport specific ones instead of using my wife's high heel ankle nonslip inserts haha.

Could use a silicone stick-on heel pad. Worn black socks on clay so bleeding tain't a thang

Same size should be fine.
I wore an 11 in Nikes and New Balance
This was the 996 -V3 and -V4, so if the V5 has gotten wider you might go half size down

Initial observations indicate that the v6 has a similar fit and feel but with a touch of increased durability and a firmer heel counter. Silhouette is the same with a few different details. Think it should take color well and should have some cool designs.

No idea when it’s coming out

I play 6-8 hours a week on court practicing/playing, then another 1-2 in court footwork/sprint drills. So I'd say 8-10 a week in the shoes.

They lasted me 8 weeks before I had holes in the bottoms.
I was thinking of getting these but this comment turned me right 'round. I'll just get a the updated barricade 13's

10 hours a week for 8 weeks is about as much as you can expect for most durable shoes. We have no Idea how his footwork is.
You also get a durability guarantee on these so if that happens in 6 months from the purchase date then you can get a second pair free from TW

They've been up for sale for a month or so now in all the major European online tennis retailers other than TWE, which doesn't seem to stock NB products anymore. Haven't seen them in any US based retailers though.
That's why I was wondering, I had seen them a few places but not in the US.
I think I even asked NB US and they couldn't tell me whether they'd have them or not. Makes no sense

Seems like a lot of outlets are out of stock on the 996’s at least in the 2E width. Are we in between releases?

I bought my first pair of these a few months ago and I’ve been playing in them and really like them.

Another random question… Are the men’s and women’s versions of these shoes the same? In theory could I just buy the correct size and women’s and not have any disadvantages?

I believe women's come in E width as standard and D width for wide feet. In theory you could buy the correct size in D width of women's.

Ok, so a women's D width is exactly the same as the 2E width for men in equivalent sizes? Are there any other differences between men and women's shoes?

That's not right - D is D, 2E is 2E. The width measurements (D, 2E, 4E, etc) use the same scale for men's and women's shoes. D width is just labeled "wide" for women's shoes and "medium" for men's shoes for convenience. 2E is men's "wide" and womens "extra wide," and so on.

The women's equivalent of a men's 9D shoe is women's 10.5D. Women's tennis shoes in 2E width are not common.
