Anybody can tell me how does the NB 996 compare to other light shoes like the Vapor 9? How is the cushioning and arch support?

I can compare the 996 with Vapor 9.5 clay if that's of any use?

9.5 has a better, comfier fit. It's pretty much perfect for my feet. The 996 toe box is quite wide, even with the normal width shoe. I have had blisters because my foot was able to move around at the front.

Both have little arch support. I think the 9.5 has slightly less, I'm using an aftermarket insole in mine. (Is this a nike thing?)

996 feels lighter and lower to the ground but a thick insole keeps cushioning up there with the 9.5s.

Comfort - go for the Vapors.
Speed - the 996s

^^ That's helpful. Thanks for the input, pal!

BTW have u tried double socks with the 996? May help stop the blisters.

i haven't tried the Vapor but do have a pair of the 996's and they are comfy. I do wear two pairs of socks on my right foot and haven't noticed any blister issues. They do wear quickly though.

I am on my second pair of 996's and like them alot. Comfort and stability are good for a light shoe. Durability is an issue, but New Balance sent a voucher for a new pair after I sent them in for warrant. Use 2nd pair exclusively on clay now.

hi,
how are they on clay? I play 100% on clay (in Portugal) and am not sure whether that outsole is "grippy" enough..

Hi, NB 996 is good shoe: confort and light are good, but the duration of the upper is not exceptional
NB mc 1296 has a longer duration; it is a great shoe, but is not as light as the 996.
NB 1296, total, is on the levels of vapor.

do you mean that the upper rips fast? the outsole durability and traction on clay is what worries me...

Yes; also, my friend of mine has torn the joint top of 996 after 8 hours of play on earth.
I advise you to be careful.
NB 1296 is superior and more durable, but a bit' heavier.

Been wearing 996s for the last year. Lightweight, comfortable and good support. Soles do wear but NB does have a good warranty. I have had no problem at all with upper part of the shoe. For what it's worth I play 15+ hours a week, mostly on hard court and I rotate a couple of pair--i.e., I never wear the same pair two times in a row. Good luck.
