New Head Frame

Is this Alex bolt frame going to be hitting the street soon then? It's ashame the UK never get the testing through tennis warehouse though I understand it is very limited. The problem with the new release rackets now is the price is very high for certain models. I did buy a few gravity Pro and tour frames but didn't get on with them and stayed with the IG Prestige MP but I have got a 360+ Prestige to try which I hear are nice, though the new one is nearly upon us now too. This sounds interesting to try also though.

Look at this manly man not going to use a racket based on it's cosmetic. By all accounts of this thread this racket seems to be a winner, definitely going to demo it asap

I'm not going to use it because its not my type of racquet; and I'm not going to stock it because it'll be a hard sell for my customers. I'm not going to put my money into something I dont think will sell in my shop. It is a nice looking racquet, along with associated luggage & accessories.

It is Bolt's racquet

There are some of the teaser racquets coming to the UK; and we're getting 1 thru the head coach at our club. Not sure how many they'll be in the UK though.

Prices are going up as well for Head racquets. New Prestige Pro (was MP) will have an RRP of £240. I also saw those today; and generally as others have said it is a good looking racquet with most of the hoop reminiscent of the original

If they were going for an onomatopoeia or something, Bang would make for just as silly a name for the line. I'm guessing colloquial use of the word and/or cheesiness would kind of make it about as meh as Boom already is though.

That's fair enough... but maybe consider whether you think it is a good racquet or not (I have no idea as I haven't tried it). Head might put out one of their special colour combos after a bit (like the Black 360+ Speed Pro and Extreme Nite), and it might look awesome, then you might regret not getting stock.

Just a thought

I agree with you. I don't like either name (Clash or Boom, or Bang for that matter), although I get the Clash name from a "Clash of styles and technologies" standpoint. I think our Austrian friends saw the word "Clash", did a lost-in-translation thing, and then thought "ah... Boom sounds like a similar name"... but it doesn't.

Won't be a fan of the name (if it is called Boom Pro or Boom MP), but if the racquet is good, I'll be happy to play with it. I will have a smile on my face whenever I read the name of it, or have to say it to anyone else for that matter. The only thing that could have made it worse would have been "Boom Boom", "Bang", or "Bang Bang". They could have gone with a Comic Strip theme and called it "KAPOW"... all in CAPITALS, of course.

Don't know how the younger kids will react to the "Boom Pro Junior" ;):giggle:

I think from their marketing vid it’s obvious it’s aimed at the Clash market and as such indirectly at the PD. Lots of buyers of both of those frames. They want a piece of that.

But think of the jokes; opponent hitting an impressive winner down the line would result in 'Man, you banged that and hard' etc.

That's the RRP... which is never what they really charge (I think)
True but Wilson have definitely put the price up for the Blade V8 and it is being sold at a high price from what I've seen, the V7 is not going to bargain prices like we used to see when the newer racket is launched and they clear the older stock. I'm sure the prestige will be up there price wise as the last one held out a pretty strong price however it didn't seem to be as available as the Wilson blade V7 for instance. As has been discussed the prestige line is getting next to no endorsement from the pros but those in the know still look for it. I'm looking forward to trying them but still have to string my 360+ red version.

Sounds one to watch for then if the teasers are coming through, maybe a few of the bigger head retailers will get them who have the right links for the testing, I know a couple of places that may have access so I'll have a check of they are coming soon.

I agree. The prices have been hiked up and are getting ridiculous. I'm trying to buy everything on sale these days. I just got some BP 16x19s for about 30% off, and together with the 2x SPs, 2x GPs, 2x 97HDs, 1x PT 2.0, and 1x Dunlop SX300 Tour (which is a very nice racquet), I think I'll be stocked up for a while.

Depending on how the reviews go with the Prestige, I may either get a second one when it is at a much lower price, or get the next version in 2 yrs (when it is going on sale). I love my 360+ PMP (I've modified it with weight in the head and handle), it is a real precision weapon, the feel is great... and I don't even mind the colours (except for the bright orange of the Head logo).

Let us know how you like the 360+ Prestige when you have had a chance to hit with it.

For the most part, yes.

On the other hand, at least upon first release, quite a few place do charge RRP and there are still quite a few physical stores that go by RRP as well.

I just miss the days when the RRP used to be 50% of that.

I agree. The price hikes are getting ridiculous... but if we keep buying they will keep the prices up. So, in some way it's our fault. I'm trying to buy things on a deep discount and trying to stay disciplined about it. I have so many racquets... I can wait until they go on sale in order to get new ones.

Yes, I really enjoyed the baseline hitting with the gravity Pro, I found the swing weight too much tho to generate that little extra speed on certain shots for instance moving onto a ball with less time to prepare. Also the maneuverability wasnt great compared to the IGMP for instance, it's pros and cons. I really think the 100 head size was giving me more on the backhand though and felt great and maybe needed that little help wiht my double hander, getting more depth and easier power, on the forehand it seemed overpowered but I've heard the prestige 360+ has that little more sweet spot similar to the gravity in a smaller head size and a touch less power though the swing weight is lower so it does depend on the player and the racket head speed they create which is always something to factor in as well as frame stiffness and balance. I always feel super controlled and within myself with a prestige MP but you have to add the power, nothing comes easy but at least you have the choice. If I'm fit and strong nothing beats it for me for feel and feedback and total control over every aspect of shot making. It's always interesting to try the new ranges especially now they do seem to be changing the recipe and frame style/mould more. Let's see what they bring to the table with this Boom Boom, has Boris Becker signed up with Head :D

Gravity is a good racquet, but I didnt buy it since I dont have the market for it (at my club).

If in the future they do bring out a special edition of the then I may buy it; I'd definitely be offered it. I have a good enough of an account (with Head) to be offered special editions.

I really would like that head would come up with a good solid racquet maybe similar to the DR 98 instead of throwing out there mediocre sticks just because the market needs them. Every time head releases a racquet i'm hopeful but then after reading reviews and seeing the specs i'm even more disappointed then before!!!

Right, I read about them but those are not racquets for everyone. I played with a Prestige MP for years and it was a demanding stick and probably the Gravity Pro is too. Head needs something in the middle 310 grams unstrung 5-6 head light 98 Sqin 16x19 22-23mm beam .....it sounds like the DR 98:unsure:

Maybe the Extreme tour but i have never tested it. Last Head stick i played with was the Speed touch which i thought it was a decent racquet but missed something.
I forgot i tested also the Speed 360 pro for 10 minutes and felt like a fry pan.

What's bothering me is Head's focus on marketing only and therefore it is not being able to deliver a good racquet for each segment. For instance now we have the Extreme 360+ MP-Tour-Pro than the gravity Mp-Tour-Pro, Prestige 360+ MP- Mid-Tour-Pro with maybe one racquet that achieves some sort of quality.
I'm not seeing the other Brands doing the same, well maybe Babolat but i'm not interested in /babolat.
It's frustrating cause i would want to go back to Head.

I disagree, I think Head have good rackets, but actually aren't particularly great at marketing them (or at least, differentiating their silos enough).

Assuming we line up vs. Yonex (but any other brand would potentially work.

Vcore Pro - Control - Prestige
Vcore - Spin - Extreme
Ezone - Power - Instinct

The difference is that Head still has to fit its Radical, Gravity and Speed into these silos (which they sort of do, Radical is a bit of everything, Speed is supposed in the "Power" silo as a more premium option, and Gravity in the "Control" silo, but I would say more "modern" than "traditional" than the Prestige).

However, with regards to MP, Mid, Tour Pro etc., is there really that much of a difference between that and say 97H, 97, 97D, 100, 100L scheme that Yonex (and in other forms, Wilson, Babolat etc.) adopt?

Whilst it might seem on paper that Head has too many silos, it’s not my experience.

I have Head’s current 98 line-up: Prestige MP, Rad MP, Rad Pro and Extreme Tour. I really like them all, and even as a big Yonex fan (and prev Wilson and Prince fan), I would chose either over other brands’ offerings. And they’re actually quite different.

Add that that, I’m def going to buy the new 98 Boom Pro based on the reviews so far from ppl who share my prefs - and I would also buy a 16x18/19/20 Gravity 98 based on the GPro mold.

Maybe demo some of the 360+ range. I have tried the 360+ Speed Pro, Gravity Pro, the Prestige MP, and the Prestige Mid. All are fantastic frames, they do everything well, and I now own all except the Mid (which I found to be firmer then I prefer - but that is just my preference and doesn't make the racquet bad). All of these racquets would be among the best in their respective categories, IMO. Others have raved about other models within each range as their preferred choices.

I think that Head has done a fabulous job with the 360+ iterations. I hope they don't ruin the next versions... but that remains to be seen. From the initial reports that are filtering through though, it doesn't seem like it.

I'm not looking for a head racquet to add to a collection or to place in the bag were there already different heads sticks but to play with it and that' would be my main and only racquet.

Maybe the 360+ is head's best work so far i can't disagree with that ( i liked the speed touch for instance) but what i'm thinking that head should let go one version of the same racquet( like, extreme MP Tour Pro) to focus on making 2 only version like in the past to achieve something much better.

Fair enough... that's how you see things. However, since there have been people that have chosen the MP over the Tour or Pro, and then others that have loved the Tour over the others, and yet lots of people chose the Pro over the rest... it would seem that there is a big fan base for each version within the individual silos.

Furthermore, many people seem to own a version from each silo. So, it seems Head is selling lots of racquets (at least in these 360+ iterations)... they must be doing something right.

At the end of the day, that is why we have so many Brands and so many choices... we are not all the same. Isn't it great?

That’s where we disagree. They don’t suit everybody and they’re not really overlapping.

I can play solid tennis with the PMP, but not against 4.5+. Too low of a launch angle and the plow and weight makes it hard to add spin and height against heavy pace. It’s a frame I thought I was hammering the ball with, based on the sweet feel of contact, but opponents told me they had more problems with other frames (which was not my assessment). This is a racket for the big flat hitters.

The Rad Pro was prob the one I liked the least, but it’s the one that let’s me keep the foot on the gas against 4.5+.

The Rad MP and ET have easy access to plow and depth when you add lead, but it’s hard to dial in without creating an uncontrollable rocket launcher.

The reason I have them all is to give them a long test run, as my game improves, to see which one ends up as my main frame.

To me, these frames are more or less as good as it gets in the 98 market, but you can’t get your cake and eat it too, meaning you have to decide what you are willing to compromise on, and what you’re not, and then you have to check if your assumptions about your game with that particular stick holds water in actual gameplay.

Does making more than 2 versions within any racquet silo automatically mean a descent into mediocrity? Looks like the entire industry needs to revise its methods!

I understand and for each its own racquet works fine but the more it is not always the better and we can see it especially in the specs listed that very rarely match the racquets.

To me a little infect as i wrote in my previous post rarely the specs match the racquet and that's poor quality control system or careless cause head knows that the racquet will be sold either way.

Ime, meeting different type of players also adds to the frustration. Against a hard flat hitter, the PMP is excellent for stable counterpunching. No pace bunters? The Rad MP and ET are great for adding pace. Heavy TS players? The Rad Pro offers a nice compromise between the two.
There are very few frames that I've felt have been "It", and all of them have been in the 95 player's category that feels excellent, but are prone to coughing up short balls when being pushed by your archetypical PA/PD TS basher.

That will be the boom pro. I just tried it and it’s very soft. Has a feeling I’m between clash 98 and dr 98. I would guess the swing weight is 320ish and I added a leather grip to it and static weight with that, OG and damp + strings was 338. Only gripe was 6 strings in throat and not 8

22mm beam, 16x19, static 330, SW 317g RA 70. Plays softer than the recorded RA. It’s extremely customizable though. I will extend it and weight it up like my Prestige

Just got off the phone with a local pro shop.

Boom Pro static unstrung weight is 310 grams, 10 pts hl unstrung balance, and the other info was in line with Raizu’s post (16x19 and 22 mm beam width). Interesting thing that he said is this - demos go out end of October with the presale beginning in November for the Jan-21 release. Is that normal for demos to go out 2 months early? He said the prestige demos would go out hopefully in the middle of October, so that’s 2 weeks before the Prestige release. The Boom Pro must have some good feedback to cut into the marketing of the new Prestige line that has yet to start.

I was able to play with the Boom MP and saw the picture of the Boom Pro with specs at my local shop (can corraborate the provided above^). - 310 static, 98 in, 10 pts HL, 16x19, 22 mm beam

Boom MP has a really odd hoop shape, I thought it would throw me off like the Gravity (never was able to feel comfortable with it due to head shape). Pleasantly surprised with how it played, very easy to use, definitely more like the clash than pure drive, the feel is a on point with a good combination between crisp and muted, found it very underpowered however compared to my ezone tour (343g strung)

mine came in 311 g strung with the new lynx touch, not a huge fan of the string, usually like something stiffer

I'm really exited about the pro, this is shaping up to be a winner - a thinner beam, smaller headsize, great feel
