New Mardy Fish doc on Netflix

They used snippets from the Loehr "16 sec cure" video to illustrate the "show no weakness" side.

Yeah I immediately recognized that video! It was a popular video for my coaches since they were all Van Der Meer trained! m
My favorite part of that video is when the guy totally Pac Mans his racquet against the net post!

Mardy said he played in 2012 USO QF against the greatest player of all time, RF.
I didn’t watch the trailer or the film but Fish didn’t play FEDR at 2012 USO so I’m sure he didn’t say that.

They’re not tennis robots they’re people. I appreciate Mardy bringing attention to his problems. He probably won’t get attacked like Naomi because he didn’t make $50 million a year.

Fake TTW news aka TTW news.

What he did in 2012 was despicable at a tournament at the 2010 tournament in Newport where he played Frank Dancevic in the QF. Watch around 44:00. Mardy verbally attacked his opponent without any provocation, and got Dancevic out of his rhythm (Mardy admitted that himself). He went on to admit to he was willing to do whatever it takes to win, including losing a friendship. Is that what you want to teach young people to win by cheating and at all cost? Unbelievable.

Sez the model parent who recommends to complete strangers, with no hint of presumptuousness, that they send themselves/their kids off to fancy golf courses as an equal-opportunity way to hobnob with the rich and famous and move up the social ladder.

But sure, gamesmanship in a tennis match is so much worse than gaming the system to get ahead. Why be a sucker who believes in hard work and merit when you can rationalize that kind of cheating as a perfectly ethical price to pay for upward mobility?

The honest truth is that kind of stuff goes on a lot on the tour, I think Mardy regrets that it happened but at the same time he says that match changed his career.

Well, I NEVER pretend to be the "model" of parenting or citizen, but at least I am being upfront about it and not sugar coating like what Fish did in the video.

Well, watching the documentary in its entirety, I didn't hear anything about Fish regret what he did to Dancevic, did you?

You might be right, he sounded a little remorseful that he lost a friendship over it but at the same time he said he had to do it.

Feel bad about the mental illness, but fish was kind of a ****** on court. “I don’t speak French, dumbass!” to Tsonga at 2011 USO etc. Enraging Agassi more than I’ve ever seen anyone do at 2004 San Jose. Agassi actually yelled “**** you” at Fish! Wasn’t hard to lipread that on TV.

Indeed but quite likely he was acting out the 'mental toughness' he was told to show in the academy. Insulting Tsonga for speaking French sounds like a very exaggerated effort, like someone who doesn't REALLY know to be mentally tough in the true sense at the elite level trying to put up a brave front.

I watched it. I thought it was very good.

I noticed one oddity I assume done to aid the visuals and having nothing to with Mardy.8-B

It was when they were building the Roddick storyline about his runup to and win at 2003 USO.

After showing Roddick beating Mardy at Cincy 2003 it shows Roddick walking overlaid with “one week later” and then overlaid with “2003 US Open”. Then cuts to Pmac + Drysdale talking about Roddick being in contention for the 2003 USO. Then it shows a dramatic Roddick point which Roddick is talking over discussing how seriously he took the weight of expectations as well as his preparations coming into 2003 USO. Given all these scenes I think the inference is strong that we’re watching a Roddick point from the 2003 USO. Was that your take ? Because we’re not. The point is from his 2002 USO match verse Chela. :sneaky:

Because woke Netflix.

Fish was a pretty cool guy who had injuries exacerbated by mental struggles or vice versa, no need to dramatise. Tennis is a tough sport.

Did you watch it? Watch first then pass judgment. Nearly all sports on the highest level are incredibly tough, psychologically more than physically, but fans usually only see the physical aspect. I found it intriguing peering into the psychological side of the struggle through the lens of Mardy’s storytelling.

I watched it. Plenty of athletes, some that never made it all the way had injury issues. Part of sport, it happens. Some overcome it, some don't.

But this did nothing but sell the idea that giving up or using excuses is okay. Sure it isn't wrong, but don't be upset when you didn't make it.

Propaganda.

Too bad you felt that way after watching. You seem to imply that Mardy “gave up” simply because the pressure got to him and used the excuse of mental health as a cop out for his “failures.” The fact is, mental health problems can be just as debilitating as physical injuries, even though it’s rarely discussed; the documentary highlighted this. Sure, some people just give up as soon as the environment gets rough, but it’s clear that’s not what happened with Mardy. Severe stress anxiety disorder is no joke; dealing with it isn’t as simple as “sucking it up.”

Well it was pretty much a physical (heart) condition with partly mental reasons, rather than sheer emotional discomfort Osaka-style. Big difference. Fish was done at the same time as Roddick while actually being a little older, so he had a career of decent longevity.

You clearly didn’t pay attention to the documentary. He had a heart issue, yes, but it was fixed

He was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder. They went into detail regarding the kind of intrusive thoughts he experienced. To say that was “partly a mental issue” is a gross misunderstanding

I mean there's no need to dramatise it. Tennis ended up making him miserable so he quit but had a good career all in all. Not like Kyrgios who had grown miserable before he even fully matured and his blatant failures don't garner sympathy. You shouldn't expect strangers to expend their emotional energy to actively sympathise anyway.

All the work and pressure made him snap and he obviously felt pretty guilty about it. That was kind of the whole point. He had to become ruthless and obsessive in order to climb to the top. That moment, among others, was a bad byproduct, and maybe in the end it wasn't worth it. They should've found that guy, Dancevic, and interviewed him for his opinion.

They had to finesse the footage a little to male the story interesting for non tennis fans. I was pretty young when Fish and Roddick started out but I remember being very aware of Roddick and not at all aware of Fish. They kinda made it seem like those two guys had all the American pressure on their shoulders. Was young Fish really that big a prospect?

It was a good little story. Everyone is of course going to lazily lump it in with the Osaka stuff, but it's a whole different story. He didn't even say that he regrets his period of hard core obsession that kind of led to the breakdown. I most enjoyed the part where he started losing his mind against Simon. I always worry about players who have to play past midnight, what goes through their minds. "I won't be in bed until 4. I might not be asleep until 5." That would drive me crazy. Also, I wonder what Patrick McEnroe thinks about sort of triggering Fish's breakdown with the "horrendous" comment. Fish admitted that he probably did play horrendously but he was nevertheless really bothered by Patrick's comment. That would suck hearing a friend call you horrendous, even if it's true.

It’s storytelling, same as all sports documentaries. I don’t think Fish was looking for sympathy. Just curious, did you watch the Andy Murray documentary? Propaganda too?

They always over-dramatise stuff, that's all. I'm mostly half-jesting as it's an irrelevant topic really, just too emotionally charged. These guys are doing fine.

He was angry with the people in Tsonga's box who were talking. Tsonga asked him "what are they saying" and that is what Fish replied with. Tsonga handled it professionally and apologized for whatever they were saying. Was weird and rude. He also almost got into a fight with Paul Henri Mathieu. And I recall some match where he was taunting Gasquet about not being able to beat him easily.

I was a fan at one point and shrugged off the latter two incidents, but after the one with Tsonga one I realized that the guy was just a dick.

I watched this and while I do remember Fish as a player I had completely forgotten he has struggled with these mental health issues that had forced him to leave the game when he was at his prime essentially. Really well made and thought provoking
