New Tennis Center in GA

That's great! That town needs something like that. Tennis is huge in ATL and is often limited by available courts, so I'm told. Hopefully some larger-ish tournaments move there.

Why so far from Alanta? There is already a great complex in Stone Mountain that is scheduled to be torn down.

Check out what we're hopefully getting sometime in the next couple of years:

I know it would be the biggest tennis complex in the U.S., but does anyone know of one bigger anywhere in the world? Thanks!

The only one I can think of is Mobile Alabama...not bigger, but close to this thing...but dang! Yeah...Rome is really out of the spotlight. You would think somewhere like Alpharetta or Marietta (Genepri and Oudin's home town) would be smarter....plus, that is where all the "old white money" is!

wow ive played a whole lot of tournys in rome. I can see Rome getting a ton more tournaments. And Rome isnt really Atlanta. It's a good hour 15 to hour and a half from downtown.

There are a ton of junior tournaments in Rome it seems like, and if I'm not mistaken, a lot of the USTA State playoffs are played there too. It does seem way of the beaten path from the tennis hotbed around Atlanta though...

Yup...Atlanta can be accessed by jeez...20, 75, 85, 400. All major Interstates, and they want to spend all that money to stick a nice place up in the back woods of north GA...I don't get it.

it really doesn't. During southern closed it gets pretty boring 1 match a day for a week. There is like almost nothing to do. Atlanta on the other hand is sick.

It's because it's out in the middle of nowhere...it's like alot of NASCAR tracks...for example, Atlanta Motor Speedway is located in Hampton GA...in the middle of nowhere.

Still not sure why the Stone Mountain Tennis Center was not used more often. Great facility with ample parking and it is now scheduled to be torn down.

Good question. You would think that at the very least, with that stadium court in place, they could have attracted a pretty good set of tournaments.

I used to play at Stone Mountain Tennis center 3-5 days a week. It was a fantastic facility. The last I heard 2 years ago Dekalb was trying to pass it to gwinnett but they wanted to much for it........

Anyway it's a real waste do we REALLY need another strip mall or new Super Walmart?

I read an article on the web that said the Stone Mountain Memorial Association that controls the tennis center has lost over $200,000 a year on that place since the olympics. They recently held a concert there and lost their tails.

There was another group that considered taking it over and putting a roof on the place, but that proved to be too expensive to do too.

Gwinnett County is planning to tear down the stadium, but will keep the remainder of the courts open, and use the stadium space as a park.

To top it off, the Super Target across the street is scheduled to close too.

Oh thats' actually not so bad. Truth is even when I played there I only walked into the stadium once or twice in two years. And it was never used for anything. Tearing it down and makign a park sounds like a great idea, if they keep teh rest of the complex in place. And yeah I saw the signs at the Target. That's gonna be an eye sore for awhile. When Targets/Walmarts leave an area it can take years to fill the space even partially. Best case some crappy flea market might move in.... or it'll be an empty shell for a few years. Sad.

i live in rome and can honestly say that people are making a bigger deal of these courts than they really are at this point. while the wheels are in motion there are still a lot of hoops to jump through before they break ground, especially with that kind of a price tag..

Wow. The planned facility looks impressive though from the rendering I'm trying to figure out what those "undersized" courts are.

Too bad Rome's not closer to Atlanta. Otherwise, it would be a great venue to host the new tourney that's going to be here this Summer.

Those "undersized" courts are the 60 ft courts that USTA 10 and Under divisions will play on. They can also be played on sideways for the QuickStart tennis...

Hmmm...you learn something new every day. I didn't know the 10 & unders used smaller courts. Makes sense though.
