You have pretty good strokes, seem to be better than mine anyway. I have a two hander so I really can't comment on your technique on your backhand, but it doesn't sound as clean as your forehand.

Nice technique. How about the serve ? The volley might be pretty good as well with such a nickname...;)

Love that backhand! Who was that laughing at the end? That was funny!

Thanks, that was actually me laughing because I had 5 racquets and all of them had no strings because I had just broken my last one and I had to use my friend's. So I was hitting with his racquet and about 5 min. later he broke his strings so we had no racquets to hit with at all.

Edberg, you remind me of a guy on my team. On the 2nd day he brought in 8 racquets, all freshly strung (some with the plastic on the handle). Our frenchie (#1 player on the team) came in a bit later, peered over at the 8 racquets, walked up and took a very close look at them, then said "bah, ah only needa one racquet!"

The guy who brought in the 8 racquets protested saying "but, but, I break strings a lot so...yeah I need all those racquets".

Sadly it was true. Without fail, our fellow friend has broken 2 racquet strings every practice for the last 10 days in a row. :p

That shoud be posted in , "Things that suck when playing tennis", because that is horrible.

Earlier I put of vids of me serving and volleying. I think I have some more from this same tape that I found though.

Yeah, that was the reason I bought that many racquets. There have been times when I get a freshly strung racquet and hit for about 30-45min and break strings. So, I got smart and started using polys for mains. They stay in substantially longer.

Unfortunately, the guy doesn't like the "dead feel" of the racquet. so we are triyng to research some strings that have a lively feel but has durability.

How in the world do you seem to be so relaxed and not swing hard but hit the ball with that speed??

Now not to offend Edberg or anything but I really don't see why so many people drool over his strokes. Sure they look fluid, but it doesn't look like he's hitting it hard at all, like this vid is from the beginning of a warmup...I wonder about this almost everytime he posts a vid.

Am I missing something?!?

Non taken. But we could play sometime just so you could judge for yourself how hard I hit. Where do you live? I'm always up for a good game of tennis:D

Ha, in Jersey (for school) and AL (home). Ummm...I'm sure you're heckuva lot better than me (unless you lie about your NTRP rating, which I don't think you do) but it seems to me that you would volley me to death but not really overpower me. Then again, we all know how misleading ball speed in videos can be.

But yeah I am curious as to how hard you actually hit. Maybe if my former coach lets me borrow his radar gun, we could actually throw around some numbers...but he never let us use it in high school. Guess he didn't want practices to turn into "how hard can you smack a serve" contests...

Doesn't seem like that to me. Just because he isn't straining does not mean the ball is coming off his racquet slowly. The smoother the stroke the better the result and pace.

And like you said, this is just a warm up.

I meant that the ball didn't seem to come off his racquet particularly fast.

And smooth may equal a hard shot for the Roger Federers of this world, but a lot of us have to try and even strain a little bit to hit the ball hard. Just ask Nadal/Roddick/and all the pro players that one would hardly describe as "smooth".

i agree...his shots really dont look at all that impressive...one of his backhands looked hideous..but his forehands look really smooth. ive seen some tennis coaches in hawaii hit better or in my opinion they were better

Well, what do you expect? I am a 1.5 player.

To me it seems like he is hitting pretty hard, and I have watched a lot of videos so I think that I can tell. Especially that short backhand he hit, he smacked it pretty nicely. Don't watch his raquet, just watch the ball and you'll see what I mean.

Those guys do have smooth strokes. Different from federers, but they are smooth.

In addition, if the person you are playing with is hitting with pace you don't have to strain too much to return the ball with pace. Just a nice smooth swing with good timing is all you need.

Sure, Edberg isn't bludgeoning the ball, but he is hitting it relatively fast.

Again, as you have already pointed out HE IS PRACTICING.

He framed one backhand, big deal. The guy wasn't even using his racquet, rather one that his friend loaned him. He has a smooth backhand, so you obviously don't know what you are talking about.

And your point is what? I've seen Roger Federer play live, and in my opinion he is better than most players here on this board. What is your point with this crap?

That clip is what 5.0 tennis looks like to me. It is actually a good example of how you don't have to "strain" to hit the ball hard. It is more a function of having good footwork, form, and timing.

noobplayer,
btw, what NTRP are you? Just curious. Try to post some videos
of your backhands and shots from the same angle as
edberg505's. then we can compare.
btw, i've seen some video of coaches and players at my
parents' racquet club that were way better than the tennis coaches
that you saw in hawaii that in your opinion hit better or were were
better than edberg505 and one time I hit a
backhand that was WAY harder than the guy at the club during
warmup forehands in mini-tennis so I think I might be able to
win a point against edberg505 but I didn't get enough sleep
the night before, otherwise I could have gone pro.

So basically, you're terrible and can now be quiet about how talented edberg505 is because it is rather apparent that you're jealous and/or delusional.

Hey noob, I'm a 1.5. I think we could have a good match. I may still be able to get to Hawaii since my club's 4.0 team is going. I can go and support the team and then we can play some.

A 4.0's stroke with consistency is = to 5.0.

As long as he can hit quality shots on the dead run and attack consistently that is a 5.0. The simplest way is to just beat a 5.0 or above then you've got game.

Those short clips do not showcase those. You would need to be on the courts or watch a video at least an hour or two to really get the feel for his game.

In conclusion results will speak for itself in determining ntrp rating.

Where do you go to school at in Jersey? I was thinking of going there this year. I have a friend that lives there and was thinking of going to see her. She's going to Rutgers. And where in AL are you originally from? I'm from the south, so I know my way around that area.

When you find a good combo, let me in on the secret. I just didn't have the time nor money to go hunting around for strings that had both good durability and feel. But the poly combo isn't that bad. The cool thing about poly is you can go thinner to get better feel. I usually hit with 16g but I figured I would lose feel going to polys so I went thinner. I may even try 18g.

definitely not 5.0 footwork

but the guy is smooth when you hit the ball to him

LOL, yeah that's what everybody says. I've admitted that my footwork is horrible in a previous post. But I definitely compensate for that with my strokes. That was my main reason for losing in the tournament I played in the beginning of the month. I played one of the University team members. The guy was good but I defintely did not put my in my best effort when I played him. I think my philosophy is if I can hit winners and serve and volley well then I'm in the game. But the guy that I played had a huge serve and he just kept pulling me off the court. His forehand was also pulling me off court which made me hit a lot of balls out of my comfort area. And his return was not too shabby either. That was the match I wish I had footage of. If my footwork was halfway decent I probably could have taken him if not taken him at least it would have been 3 sets.

Oh cool, I go to Rutgers! New Brunswick though, I dunno if your friend goes to the Newark or Camden ones. We should play if you come here. For the record, everyone, I DO think Edberg is better than me. Let me know if you do plan on coming here so I can practice, practice, practice so I don't embarrass myself. Errr...I'm probably like a 3.5 or something.

I've mostly been raised in NJ but my family recently moved around the Huntsville area a few months ago. That means I'll be there during the summer and winter. But damn, it's hot there!
