New Volkl "Mids"

The Volkl SG 10 Mid Is super stable with a very plush feel too. I was so surprised that there is no vibration at all. This is my favorite new release I have hit with in 2015. I also have a PB 10 Mid and found the SG 10 Mid to be just a hair larger by the V throat bridge. The sweet spot is very generous that extends to the upper part of the string bed. I found it to be very forgiving and still had pleasant sensation even on miss-hits or framed shots. You know it happens but it isn't jarring on your arm. There was very good power for a player racquet with very good response you know what the racquet is doing. I hit pretty flat and I did not hit that much more spin than my 18x20 racquet. I am sure there is great spin potential though. I played with it in stock form and strung at 55lbs with natural gut. It was a pleasure to hit play with. I liked the balance and might consider just bumping up the overall weight a little. But that's just my personal preference.
The only thing I would like to change about it is the yellow color. It is very bright yellow and gets lots of attention at the courts. I think a player that would like this type of racquet would like a black or grey with some color pop to it. Black with Volkl written in yellow pop would have been better. I also would have preferred a glossy clear coat finish instead of the matte finish.

Hi VSBab, can you compare the differences between the PB10mid and SG10mid330?

VS, can you compare to the previous O10 mid and O10 mp? The head prestige graphene mp is similar in head size and type of racquet. Can you make comparison between the two? Also, does the new SG mid string tight like the O10 used to?

Great mini-review. Seems to keep in line with the mid family, which is great.

No matter how well they play, they're a big fail in terms of PJs. The 320 looks like a Super g 4, and the 330 looks like a Super g 10 295. Why oh why

I am currently Playing with the O-Mid. which I really think is a fine racket. It is a good fit for me but perhaps not for others. The sweetspot is really impressive. I am intrigued by the new 330 mid but that color could very well be a deal breaker. Yes, cosmetics matter to me but who knows perhaps I could adjust. I wish they stayed with the color scheme on the O-mid as it is so pleasing to the eye. I don't want my eye's to be drawn to anything but the ball.

Do you think the Super G 10 came from a Tour 10 V-Engine Mid mold?

Are you fairly certain the hoop is the same size as the PB10 Mid and that the extra 3 sq in came solely from the pointy throat?

Played today with the 320. A bit demanding, especially playing for the first time in almost two months (recovering from a knee injury). Incredible looks, strung with my favorite string Isospeed Pro Classic at 56. Nothing special on serves, maybe a little underpowered in that department. Great control on groundstrokes .
Found it outstanding in volleys, returns, and slice. Cannot say much about topspin generation as I have old school strokes. Very, very maneuverable. Doesn't feel too stiff for 70RA, actually, found it quite comfortable. In conclusion, quite impressed with this stick, will play more with it, hopefully my serve can get faster later on, otherwise, will have to wait for the Pacific x tour pro.

Hi VSBab, can you compare the differences between the PB10mid and SG10mid330?
I found the SG10Mid to be more powerful, more muted (less vibration), and stiffer.

I found the SG10 Mid does everything better compared to the Graphene Prestige MP. Far more forgiving, better feel, and easier on the joints (wrist, elbow, and shoulder). I never hit the O10Mid. But I have hit the O10MP when it first came out. The SG10Mid does not string up tight like the O10MP does.

Thank you!

Different mold. The SG10Mid has a wider beam and the V throat bridge is not as pronounced.

Where is NoBadMojo now that Volkl has such a great line of racquets?

Thanks VS. I have have followed your posts for awhile and appreciate your feedback. In recent years I have moved away from Head rackets and the prestige in particular, which was my go to racket.. I have really learned to appreciate the Volkl line and their ability to maintain something close to the old school feel, with a modern touch. In my opinion, they truly make quality sticks. I will likely demo the 330 mid and try to overlook the color.

Thanks VS! I really like the graphene Prest MP, I am impressed if the new volkl mid is much better. How do they compare in terms of power?

Also, from your pictures it seems the new mid is not much bigger, even almost nearly same surface area, as the pb 10 mid. So my question is: does the new mid play closer to a 93 or a 98?

Had my first hit with the G10 Mid 320 today. For reference, I am 4.5, play with lots of spin, and currently play with the Tfight 315 LTD and Graphene Rad Pro. My initial review:

Weight: 330 grams strung with Cyclone 16g (51 lbs)

Balance: 7 pts headlight (no overgrip)

Initial Impression: love the matte black/red paintjob. Quality fit and finish. Biotac grip is comfortable but a bit too spongy. I will probably replace with a firmer grip that would provide more feel. Head size is a longish oval. The mains are comparable in length to the mains on a 98”, and in fact were longer than my Tfight 315 LTD, but the crosses in the middle of the string bed were on the short side, and probably are comparable in length to crosses on a 93”.

Groundstrokes: The first thing that stood out when I started hitting was the stiff feel. I would say the 70 stiffness rating is accurate, as it felt at least as stiff as the Graphene Rad Pro. My shoulder acts up at times, so it will be interesting to see over the next couple weeks if the Volkl technology in the grip and elsewhere will save my shoulder despite the stiffness. A lot of power on groundstrokes, and control was excellent as well. Spin was average, probably due to the smallish head size and the mediocre maneuverability. For a racquet that should have a swingweight around 320, it swung heavier. I was late on some backhands. My Tfight LTD is leaded up to a similar swingweight and swings much easier. One impressive attribute of the mid is that it felt stable and solid, and I felt no twisting when returning hard serves and heavy groundstrokes.

Volleys: The stiffness and solid feel helped me knife through volleys and put some heat on them.

Serves: Flat serves were accurate with average mph, but had some trouble getting a high kick on spin serves.

Summary: Fun racquet to hit with, but whether it will help me win points is TBD. It is stable, hits a heavy ball, and is a good blend of power and control. The downside is that it is stiff, has a smallish sweet spot, and I felt some vibration at the upper end of the hoop on mishits, which I don’t feel on the Tfight. Need to practice more with it to see if this belongs in my bag. Maybe a Nat gut/Poly hybrid (which I use on the TFight) will alleviate the stiffness issue as well.

I am very disappointed for the stiffness and small sweet spot.
It seems not better than Prince Textreme 95 I played with.
Thank you for the review.

Thank you for the review.

How is it possible that this frame has a small sweet spot? It's a midplus. Compared to a true mid, by default this has a sweet spot of a mack truck.

Can someone compare the 320 mid with Prince Speedport Tour (specs)? The specs look very similar. Been searching for a replacement for the Speedport Tour, but haven't found anything similar.

I only hit with the speedport tour briefly years ago, but the prince will feel more muted while the 320 mid is very crisp. Specs do look somewhat similar so it's worth a demo if you don't mind a little more feedback and stiffness from your racquet. In terms of power, the 320 certainly can't compare to a pure drive roddick but it has decent power for a players stick. IMO the Power would be somewhere between the 6.1 95 16M and 6.1 95 18M. I can't remember how much power the speedport had....

How would you say the power and stability is compared to your RadPro? Or a Speed Pro?

^^ They made a good review, looks to be a great racquet, sweet paint job too. Seems the vast majority, if not all Volkls are uber comfortable.

I'm not so sure about this... The head shape looks extremely elongated, even more so than old Dunlop racquets... I think they'd be better off with a wider head.

After such a glowing review of the 320, I doubt that they will find the 330 better, but we'll see.

My bet is that Chris will switch to the 330. The 320 is too stiff for the more classic player and probably not quite suited to the modern one.

For all the obvious reasons to do with the popularity of a certain type of 100" racquets.

But it would still suit modern players, just maybe not quite as much.

One reviewer said it did nothing particularly well. With a modern racquet you want your forehand to be enhanced.

I quite like it in any event, but Volkl is one of the more expensive brands where I live so i am not interested.

I wish they would have had at least 2 of the same reviewers for the 320 and 330. I would have been interested to hear Andy's thoughts on the 320. It sounds like he may have preferred it to the 330.

Had another session with the 320 mid. Forehands felt great, good blend of power and control. The one handed slice backhand also felt good, good bite and the stiffness gave me easy depth. However the 2HBH did not feel good. I was having trouble finding the sweet spot and the trajectory was lower than expected. I usually play 98-100 sq inch, so maybe the elongated 96 head shape just takes some getting used to. Players with one handed backhands obviously wouldn't have this issue.

i tried the new PB10mid black and it was really strange feeling racquet. felt like I was using a scalpel, like it was so manuverable and fast but at the same time absolutely no power. So i try to swing harder and i am shanking it. probably too advance for me or something. a shame i was really excited to try it.

Used to be a Volkl 10 series fanatic, but I just switched to lighter racquets. Just can play better and play longer with something 330 strung than 330 unstrung. These Volkl's have addicting feel though. Might consider switch back when I become a better player.

The written review of the 330 version is in.

And what fascinates me the most, tbh, is the last line in Chris' comparison:

Both of them offer great feel like this Volkl. Others include the Yonex Tour G 330 and the Head Graphene XT Prestige Pro.
I really hope this means the new Prestige Pro will launch sooner rather than later (2016) ...

I think they need to stop putting Andy onto reviews of 'heavy' racquets, i mean he brings down the average a lot on those reviews.

It's funny- he's the strongest player of the entire group, however he prefers the "lightest" sticks... mid 11.5 uncustomized- (see Blade 98, Yonex Ai98/Dr98). I bet you that Andy's personal sticks are customized over 12oz. To play Open level tournaments with a sub 12oz. stick, he wouldn't have the mass to compete with big hitters. His elbow and shoulder would be shredded after all these years at his level using a lighter stick- see Nadal.

As a former D1 player, who "dabbles" in USTA over-40 age group tourneys, I still need a 12oz stick to compete with these guys. A good player, is a good player. You need the mass of the racquet to not only absorb shock, but also to redirect pace at that level. Even Granville (whom, I'm assuming is in his late 40s or early 50s) went from a PS 6.1 95 to a lighter Pure Drive back to a lighter Prestige "S" then back up to a Prestige Pro-11.8oz, only after his shoulder injury healed. Any person with a good game needs a stick 12oz+/- to compete at a strong level.

So, in summary, either keep Andy off the heavier reviews, or let him disclose that he does customize his frames but starts with a lighter platform. Further, he quashes the mids also. I'm not "hating" on Andy, I think he does a great job, however I think his reviews are necessarily indicative of what he actually prefers in "real life." Keep the reviews in line with the guys/gals who would lean towards that kind of particular frame.

I play tested the Wilson Burn FST, Angell TC95, Yonex V-Core SV95, and the Volkl Super G 10 Mid 320. For me the Volkl had the best performance and combination of power and control. I am coming from 2 years of playing with a customized Dunlop M2.0.

The play test results are always subjective and I take into account the play tester's frame history, skill, and playing style. Quite often I have a different opinion and experience> For example Marco gives the Volkl Super G 10 Mid 320 a pretty low score on Volleys. This is a stiff frame and maybe he prefers more 'feel'. It is difficult to know since in the video he refers to it as a great frame. All in all though, I think that the TW reviewers do a nice job and a professional review. I am always interested in reading the reviews and I enjoy the videos, but I pay test for myself and choose the frames I want to play test based on the specs of the frame and what I like.
