New Volkl String -massive spin

Well nice for the players in the USa but this string isnt sold in Europe al least not in my country. Furthermore the older Volkl cyclone strings are, but at much higher prices than in USA which is surely a shame for the European company that Volkl is! :(

These dimension can not be right.
If the string has 2 straight sides of 1.15 mm at 90 degrees than the old Pythagoras rule gives for the lenght of the diameter:
(2*(1.15)^2)^1/2 which equals 1.63 mm. So then you come into trouble while stringing this 16g string. Maybe that why Germans sells these strings only in USA, lol

Look at the pictures. The cross-sections show the edges are not straight lines but more like arcs.

Why do they always make these strings with such fancy crazy colors? I don't get it... any plans for a more neutral color coming out? White? Natural? Light blue, Grey? I don't like these flashy bright colors at all in my racquet, I like classic ones..

I believe the equivalent gauge dimension is not accurate, 1.2 mm diameter is r = 0.6 mm. The surface area of the string is 1.15 * 1.15 or 1.3225 mm^2. Area of circle is Pi*r^2. Backtracking to r ~ 0.64 mm or d ~ 1.28 mm, which is more in the 17 or 16L range. With shaped strings, manufacturers normally also post the equivalent round string gauge. As the string approaches a circular pattern with more sides, the estimate becomes more accurate.

Yes, yes, yes..... how much power does it generate, and how long does it hold tension?
WOW,,, strung up the V-square today,, and it felt so soft. hit only 5 minutes but it is amazingly soft string bed and grabs the ball like crazy. I can't put a full review on 5 minutes of hitting but will report more soon.

I just got done with V-Torque, which only lasted me three hours before it lost so much tension that the control disintegrated. The V-Torque was exceptionally elastic when pulling tension, more so than any other poly string I've used, including Cyclone, which has been my son's go-to string for three or four years. V-Torque probably stretched twice as much or more than a similar gauge Cyclone when pulling 10% less tension.

Is the V-Square the same way? Very elastic and stretchy when pulling tension?

It stretches but not as much as Torque. Importantly it is very easy on the arm... this string was made for guys that doesn't like stiff polys that starts up arm issues. My review below

Review. WOW just WOW,, another great addition to Vokle lineup. This string reminded me of another string. Weiscannon Ultracable which is another 4 sided square string. but this is so much better in all departments. Strung up at 50 lbs on pure Aero 2019.
Incredible grip on the ball with little effort. String is soft so it pockets the ball well and grips the ball for massive topspin. My elbow was sore this day of the test so I couldn't generate my usual high swing speed but even at 70 -80 % of swing speed, string was grabbing the ball and generating massive topspin. Launch angle was fairly high but didn't matter, ball was diving into the court at the last minute. Definitely more Topspin than Solinco tourbite, Ultracable, Alu power, RPM blast.

Control was excellent, however if you mishit the ball, control would diminish. I think this is due to the high launch angle. you guys that hits a huge ball, could string it tighter around 54-55 lbs, you might not have an issue.

Power was pretty good, I would say slightly above average. Not as high as Alu power or RPM blast. but in par with Cyclone, perhaps slightly more powerful than cyclone.

Feel. this is where I have some issues. I didn't expect a really great feel from Square shape string, that's just way it is. but much better feel than Ultracable. Feel is better than it should be cause string's ability to pocket the ball well.

Vibration. this is also the place this string really shines. Very soft and almost no vibration off the string bed. If any of you guys with arm problems looking for a soft poly, you should definitely check this out.

Thanks! Just bought some 18g but I need to write a review for this new Diamond back sidewinder string so it will be a few weeks until I string it up. I’ll probably hybrid it with ghostwire in the crosses since that’s what I’ve been doing for a while now.

Thanks for the review. I had high hopes for Ultracable but hated it. Great spin but felt awful...very plasticky and no feel. I'll have to give V square a hit soon.

Yes, I know what you mean, I really had issues with feeling the Ball with Ultracable. but with V square, I had much better feel, albeit with any Square shaped string, feel isn't going to be top notch. that is just the way it is due to shape of the string. however, the reason V square has much better feel is due to its softness and ability to pocket the ball on impact. I hit hard for about 1 hour and I had no pain in my wrist or shoulder. I have to demo it for few more hours to get the better idea of its full potential.

Like I said, power is less compared to Alu power or Solinco tourbite, but spin is greater. and you won't have arm issues that you may have with alu power.

Awesome. I dont want power from my strings, just spin. Like to be able to swing away as hard as possible, but also have some feel for the 4 times a match I go to net :)

@Nostradamus, you said you strung the V-Square at 50 pounds in your Pure Aero. What string and tension did you have in the racquet before the V-Square? Are you noticing any loss of tension and resulting loss of control?

I'm string up V-Square tomorrow. I only bought one set for now, so I want to make sure I get the tension in the right ballpark. After my bad experience with V-Torque, and previous experience with Cyclone where it just is too springy for me, I'm tempted to go up about 10% more than normal. That's way more than I think I should because I don't want to sap the elasticity out of the string, but that V-Torque experience has me pretty leery of only going up 5%.

I only hit for 1 hour so far, tension maintenance has been good so far. I had alu power in my racket previously then RPM blast

Got this today:

uc

Opened it up. First "uh oh..." - it's a very thin string. I purchased the 17 gauge/1.23 mm V-Torque and that was a very chunky string for that size, so I thought this would be larger in cross section than advertised also.

I cut a foot out of the string and pulled 50 pounds tension. Second "uh oh...". It's **very** stretchy, almost as much as V-Torque and more than any other poly string I've used so far. I had problems with V-Torque losing so much tension after only three hours that it became unusable. Now, I have an equally stretchy string AND it's super thin for its stated gauge.

Strung it up. Third "uh oh...". As the string stretched, it necked down so now it looks way thinner than any 1.20 string has a right to be.

uc

I went half up 3.5 pounds in main and cross tension versus what I typically used before. Instead of doing 5% or 10%, I ended up increasing about 7%. It ended up being four grams lighter than the 17 gauge Dunlop Explosive Red that was just in there. I added back 2/3's that much weight in lead tape at 3 and 9 o'clock.

I play tomorrow afternoon. Hope I don't have a fourth "uh oh...".

You either must hit very hard if Cyclone is springy for you or you strung it too low. I like Cyclone because it is one of the lower powered polys I've tried. Looking forward to your review, great stuff so far.

I tried Cyclone in the past as well and I thought it was pretty low powered string, not bouncy at all. Launch angle wasn't bad. This new V-square launch angle is higher, just so you know. this one has more power than Cyclone, less control. but it does have good ball pocketing, kind of mushy feel, not crispy. You will have to control your shots with topspin

TW Staff - I have used Ultra Cable in the past and it added about 3 grams to the weight of the strings over my normal setup. Since this is square, is it also as heavy as Ultra Cable?

In theory, a 1.2mm square string would have the same cross section as a 1.36mm round string and the 1.3mm square would be equivalent to a 1.47mm round string.

I had a tough 2 1/2 hour hit with a former college player. This is a nice string. It has excellent spin capability - I think fresh V-Torque might have had the tiniest bit more grab on the most skimming of shots, but it is so close on most everything else. I has a bit more power than V-Torque, but also a bit more control. I can't say how much of that is due to having strung this thinner gauge of V-Square about 7% tighter than the thicker V-Torque. I can say that even with this thin gauge, that tension loss has been about average but hasn't affected the control. Directional accuracy is very good. It has a good pocketing feel that gave me an immediate confidence in hitting with the string.

What is noticeable is that the strings started moving around within about ten minutes, and now after one 2.5 hour session, the strings are all over the place, just like with V-Torque. Also, the strings are notched severely. I don't think I have another 30 minutes on this string before it snaps. I have to say that both of us were pretty on yesterday so we were hitting the ball as hard and cleanly as we ever would. Take a look at the third string from the bottom - that's a main with the cross moved out of the notch.

uc

The balls also took a beating. We opened two new cans and proceeded to wear the balls down to unplayability. There are string burn/residue marks all over the balls. This photo doesn't show them with the same clarity as in person - the marks are very noticeable.

uc

The sharp edges on the mains are worn down a bit but there is still a noticeably square shape. The crosses still have their sharp edge.

Power is above average, probably 7.5 out of ten for a poly string. Comfort is better than average. Spin capability is 9.5 out of 10. Tension maintenance is average but hasn't affected control (yet). Control is probably about a 7 out of 10, just due to the high power levels. Incoming spin sensitivity is pretty high - more than V-Torque. I popped up a couple of volleys off dipping, heavy topspin shots and could more significantly feel the spin on the ball bite into the strings on contact than most other shaped poly strings I've tried. I had a great serving day. I hit a couple of 60 MPH slice serves in the deuce court that landed half way up in the service box and were several feet outside the doubles alley by the time they reached the baseline. Kickers were head high.

Durability is the major downside. In this thin gauge, it looks like three hours before it breaks. I'll try the next thicker gauge next time around with my next order from TW. When this breaks, I'm going to string up 1.20 Tour Bite to see how that string compares in roughly the same gauge.

The string is very light. This replaced the demo set of Dunlop Explosive Red in 17 gauge that I tested for TW, and in the 1.20 gauge was four grams lighter. Some of it is that the string looks very thin - the 1.20 measurement is probably the largest dimension. And it's a very elastic string so it stretches a lot when pulling tension, and the string necks down and gets thinner as a result.

Even though I'm an old dude at 57, I still like to pound the ball. I've posted some pretty ugly videos of myself hitting, because I believe that seeing how I play gives others a good basis for knowing how to interpret my opinions on tennis stuff. So with that said, when I was chosen as a tester for the Pure Drive VS, I posted this groundstroke video - during hard play, I'd probably swing 20-30% harder on a good percentage of shots.

My son has used the 1.25 gauge of Cyclone in a 365 gram Pure Drive Tour Plus for the last three or so years. He strings it pretty tightly at 52 pounds with a hard prestretch and hits a pretty flat two hander but a pretty spinning forehand.

On my SW104, I've found that the higher string density means that most strings in the 1.25 to 1.30 gauge range need about 48-49 pounds in the center mains and 46-47 pounds in the center crosses, and I decrease tension as I move towards the edges. That's where I strung the Cyclone 1.25, and it was just too springy right from the get-go, and only got more springy as it lost tension.

I did buy this:

uc

But I've come to realize that I like the way my racquet swings and feels on impact if I have less weight in the stringbed and more weight at 3 and 9 o'clock, so I've been going to thinner gauges. That just makes my string problem worse but it is fun testing strings to see if any poly in around a 1.20 gauge has enough stiffness to give me the feel I like.

It looks like 17 G version of this string maybe perfect for you from the sound of it. String is so soft that even at 17 G, it will give you excellent ball pocketing in the string bed. and give you that nice plush feel for power and spin. That ball is nothing.. After I was done with the string test, my balls had no fuzz left, it was bare striped naked.

WOW,,, you are 57 and you can still destroy the ball with College players... that is impressive. How are your joints doing at your age ? I am not as old as you yet and I already have beginnings of osteo-arthritis in my fingers. This is very depressing. so I pretty much can't do full bed poly anymore except when I am just hitting couple of hours for string test.....

I retired a couple of years ago and that has been my fountain of youth. I can sleep and rest as much as I want to, and I can work out as much as I need to. I'm physically better than I've been for probably the last ten years, but still I have osteoarthritis in my back, hips, and knees. I had a spinal fusion in my c4/5 a couple of years ago to deal with chronic injury from a lifetime of throwing and racquet sports. And I get hilariously stiff and walk really funny if I play more than a couple of hours of tennis a day.

As for elbows and wrist, I'm pretty good. I realized that as I got older, I tended to mis-hit more, especially on hard shots coming at me. So a long time ago, I started using oversized racquets and that has saved my arm. I religiously do resistance training so I can continue to swing a 355 gram, 348 swingweight racquet, which helps a lot since I mis-hit quite a bit.

I did play with my son tonight, after playing 90 minutes in the morning. I wasn't going to post this, but figure why not - it shows the worst of the worst. My son hasn't played in a week, and I also spread eight cubic yards of bark in the last two days. I started recording about 70 minutes in - the first clip is from when I first set the camera up, and the last, longer clip is the physical breakdown right as we got to the end of our 90 minutes of court time.

This was with the V-Square. I was sure it was going to break - I didn't use it this morning and really want to break it tonight so I could restring, but it amazingly lasted despite being so notched earlier. I never really hit any balls super hard like I did when I last played last time against the former college player. Anyhow, have some laughs at my expense.

About 70 minutes into our non-stop practice, when the body was starting to betray me. We were already missing quite a bit more by then, and the balls had lost their bounce:

And the total physical breakdown - the last 7.5 minutes of our 90 minute session. I couldn't hit a ball into the court to save my life:

Kind of unsure if a softer string like V-Square is right for me. I just like the feel and ability to really swing out with a stiffer string like Tour Bite and I feel I play a more forceful game with it, but then again, by the time I get as tired as in the two videos I posted, probably the V-Square helps me get some extra oomph on my shots. Fortunately, I never get as tired playing matches as in the videos, and that's why I'm leaning towards a Solinco string.

Anyhow, hope the videos give some insight into how I formed my opinions and impressions of V-Square, and provide a good laugh as well. Maybe if I can get a good following, youtube will send me money for a toupee. . .
