Miami, March 25 (DPA) World number one Caroline Wozniacki said Tuesday that a tennis return for recovering Serena Williams would be good for the sport - but warned that the new generation has already staked a claim on the top of the game.

'Serena has achieved so much (13 Grand Slams) that I'd also like to achieve,' said the 20-year-old world number one Dane in the run-up to her second-round start at the Miami Masters. 'But for Serena, getting fit again is the most important thing.

'I considered her a friend, but we have a good younger generation coming up, the competition is very deep now. Serena will have a good challenge.'

The 30-year-old younger Williams sister is still recovering from surgery in February to remove a blood clot in her lungs and has no timetable set for a return to the sport after last playing nine months ago at Wimbledon. Her elder sister Venus also pulled from Miami with a longstanding abdominal injury.

The pair consider the tournament their home event and have won eight of the past 13 women's title between them, with Serena claiming five during a seven-year run.

Wozniacki visited Williams in Los Angeles earlier in the month and has spoken to the American in recent days. 'I wish her well and hope she comes back soon,' said the Indian Wells champion who claimed six trophies in 2010 and two so far in 2011.

Wozniacki, who receives a bye in the first round like the other 31 women's seeds at the dual-sex event, again disputed criticism that holding the top ranking without having won a Grand Slam is somehow shameful for the sport.

'I want to be number one and win a Grand Slam. When you're young you think of being number one, you don't know yet what those Grand Slams mean or how important they are.

'I've reached one of my goals and now I'm going after my other,' said Wozniacki.

The Dane said that she feels she has the game to eventually break through into the ranks of Grand Slam champions. 'I have a lot of weapons, offensive and defensive. You don't win big events without them.

'A Grand Slam title for me is hopefully just a matter of time. I'm on the right way.'

Women's play was getting underway Tuesday with men due to start their event Wednesday.

Here lies the problem with poor Caroline Hingis-Vicario. She (or her coaching staff) has convinced CH-V that she has offensive weapons. Not even 21, she's already delusional.

Caroline Hingis-Vicario can't even beat Kim Clijsters and she's already calling out Serena Williams? Oh, Mother Marjorie recalls her Europa cousin, Martina Hingis, saying something similar about Stefanie Graf. And we all saw what Stefanie Graf did to Martina Hingis. Oh, yes, we did!

"Hi, my name is Caroline Hingis-Vicario and I have the offensive and defensive weapons to win a grand slam singles event. I really do. Really."

Caroline Hingis Sanchez-Martinez is starting to remind me of Safina when she said that 'being no 1 is what you are remebered for, not a GS'!

As a kid I always assumed whoever won Wimbledon is the best, or the USO the few times I saw it as a child, that is who me and my friends saw as the best, as they won the big titles.

We had no real concept of ranking and points and didn't have a clue as to who was RANKED where, and I suppose that is the same for most other children also.

Yeah sorry, winning a bunch of tournaments to collect points isn't as important as winning the biggest tournaments of the year. IMO, if you can't win a slam, then your #1 ranking really does mean nothing. Safina was in the same boat. Now where is she?

Hello, Jones101!

CHS-M is beginning to sound a lot like her Europa cousin, Martina Hingis. Except before Hingis began spouting off her non-sense, she had already accumlated a bag of goodies. CHS-M has already begun spouting off her non-sense and she has yet to accumlate any goodies. CHS-M kinda reminds me of one of those dumb girls who would blindly hurl themselves into a swimming pool before checking to see if there was any water in it.

Historically speaking, winners of grand slam events have always taken precedent over #1 ranking weeks. The ATP and WTA computerized ranking systems didn't culminate until after the Open Era began. However, as tennis evolves, and the ranking system grows older with the sport, its importance will likely evolve.

Come on guys, take things with a grain of salt. If you were #1 in your sport, and got asked every day about not winning a slam, you'd get tired of it too. She wants to win them, but it doesn't diminish her winning a ton of tourneys to get to #1, still a big accomplishment. Even when she wins a slam (and she will), it'll still be, "well, you've only won 1, Serena's won 13...how does that make you feel?"

It's the same thing in every sport. Kobe's won 6 titles (and looks headed towards a 7th) but all he ever hears about is how Michael Jordan is better. By the time the arguing ends, it seems like he sukks.

Woz doesn't sukk...she's an excellent player with a very bright future, and from what I saw, is working on her offense as well. Cut her some slack.

The NBA playoff has not even started but you already awarded Kobe his sixth rings? Now let’s not get too far ahead of yourself.

Did she just say that women's tennis is very deep now?
HA HA HA HA HA HA!
I suppose she can't bite the hand that feeds her and be honest and say this is generation suck and I am taking advantage, but really???
She can't beat mummy Clijsters who is winning slams left and right playing a part time schedule but this generation is deep and Serena should be worried.
LOL.

Serena couldn’t beat a mommy either so technically Serena is in the same boat.

Except that Serena is a proven champion who has beaten Clijsters in slams and holds the most number of slams of any active player. Caro also failed to beat a sub par Serena the one full match they played. Nothing has changed since then, but suddenly the field is deeper.
Come on, you have to recognize this is bullsh*t talk from Caro.

She's only 20. She may win a slam yet. Lots of time still.
When you look at the history of tennis, most of the GOAT's or those of GOAT status had already struck grand slam success in their teen's, with the exception of Navratilova. However, Navratilova had a very offensive-minded game which catapulted her career after losing weight, getting fit and getting her mind right.

Caroline Hingis-Vicario's game is not of the same caliber as Navratilova's. The wear and tear psychologically from playing defensively most of the time only worsens with age.

As we all saw yesterday in Miami, the wear and tear has already begun to take its toll. Here's a little quote from Caroline Hingis-Vicario, “Nothing was going on with my forehand, nothing was going on with my backhand, I lost the match.’’ When you only have one option to your game plan, there's not a lot margin for error. The reality being, Caroline Hingis-Vicario was beaten by a smarter tennis player who knew that once she took Caroline Hingis-Vicario out of her rhythm, she was done.

The only thing that can save Caroline Hingis-Vicario's career is a new coach. She's assured of keeping the #1 ranking until mid-April, but it really won't matter because Kim and most of the top ten will beat her down.

Serena owned her generation like nothing I have seen before or after in tennis history.

Most of these gen players had 0 or 1 win vs Serena. Mostly 0.

Wow that's complete ownage.
