This is good timing for Nadal, it keeps him at 100% motivation level for the next couple of years :happydevil:
But its a shame the Gold medal game is only best-of-3-sets now.

I wonder what the Olympic record is for years between gold medals. It would be 16 for Nadal. lol That sounds crazy typing it.
Anthony Ervin comes to mind.

He won Gold in Sydney at the 2000 Olympics in the 50m freestyle, 16 years later after having had retired, he wins gold in Rio at the 2016 Olympics in the 50m freestyle (as well as the 4x100m relay).

16 years, crazy feat.

Anthony Ervin's race in 2016 was awesome; good call.

Kim Rhode also has 16 years in between gold medals (1996 and 2012), although she also won a gold in 2004 so I'm not quite sure that's what the other poster was getting at.

A tournament played at Roland Garros......how is this not tailor-made for Nadal? Barring another injury, how could he not fail to win this? It will be his best ever opportunity to join Murray and become a double OSG champion!

Only when he's been coming from injury or injured. Those times are not gone.
He's only won 1 clay masters1000 since 2018 and has managed to win RG coming from injury. The point is that he's a different kind of monster in Bo5, where he's only ever lost 3 matches, including Davis Cup and masters1000 finals before 2007. He has a close to %8 better record on Bo5 than on Bo3. He'll be favourite, but his odds would be even higher if it were Bo5.

I suspect Nadal will be retired by then
Don’t be shocked if his next foot injury he calls it, especially with his first kid on the way

Since it's best of 3, Nadal, if he does make it to 2024 Olympics, will be vulnerable there, so i'll say Alcaraz

I don’t think winning more slams is everything to him versus staying with his family
Nadal himself stated in a recent interview that he believes his life won't change much after becoming a father (i. e.: he will continue prioritizing his tennis career). Besides, giants of the racquet such as Federer and Djokovic have proved it is perfectly compatible to be a father with winning Slams.

Rafa has 63 clay titles and only 14 of them are BO5.

Although 14 of them are Clay slam titles he does have an extra 7 clay titles that did require a Bo5 final which gives him a 21-0 record in Clay Bo5 finals. I think the watering down of both M1000 and International Gold tournaments did make it easier to defeat Nadal in clay. Nonetheless, he is still 137-3 in Bo5 clay.

In best of 3 matches, he will only be a slight favourite as anything can happen in shorter matches, especially two years down the line.

There are players who may not beat him over 5 sets but can definitely do so over 3 sets. I mean he could even be defeated in 2 sets.

So I only have him as slight favourite for the Olympics! (And he will probably have to skip Wimbledon)

Impossible to predict in 2 years who will win any title especially with the possibility of more pandemic and apocalyptic wars going on. Moreover, who knows which player retires or is injured. I think a healthy Zverev has a chance to repeat.

Nadal will be favoured but in Bo3 it's a crapshoot. Feel Nadal will be motivated though.

Given the sport as well I have to assume he was doping IMO. He not only got that Tim span record but became the oldest swimmer to win Gold. And he came back in 2011 but did not Medal in 2012. It's also not like a weak group to take advantage of with defending champion. Popov was a legend in speed swimming and couldn't medal at 33 but this dude gets Gold at 36 after no medals at 32 and never as dominant as Popov? Fishy.

Aladar Gerevich

First Gold in 32, last in 60. It was for Team and he won in-between but still 28 year span between Golds and he had to be good enough to make those teams. Had a 12 year span between individual Golds.

It's way too far ahead. 2 years are very long. Who knows can can happen. Impossible to make a solid prediction before 2024 begins... And quite frankly, I never cared much about Olympics Games in tennis. Some players may think it's important but majority of the viewers don't care. Very little hype in Tokyo, most TVs weren't even broadcasting tennis and very few fans were commenting the matches. I love watching athletics, gymnastics and swimming competitions. Not tennis.

I would guess Nadal is retired by then so Djoko should win it easily
Nadal already mentioned how keen he is to play 2024 Olympics.
And he also said he'd like to retire with 25 slams.
All signs point to him being there in 2024 and probably 2025 too.
After all, he's about to win his 3rd Slam of the year :happydevil:
Good luck forcing him into retirement after that :-D

Most players deeply care about winning a medal for their country. Stop with this agenda driven narrative

Tokyo (Covid) olympics was without spectators, there was no hype or energy at any event, including athletics, whole stadium was empty!

Tennis-wise, Nadal and Federer were not playing in it due to injuries, so obviously majority of tennis fans lost interest without the BIG players.

If all 3 or even 2 of the big 3 had been there, there'd been a completely different vibe.
