Prior to NextGen, all of the top players of the game had a distinctive persona and identity:
Novak, before establishing himself as the BOAT, was Djoker, impersonating all of the top players, dancing, goofing off and generally having a fun time while winning a ton of Slams.
Roger was as graceful as Baryshnikov. Win or lose, his faceoffs against his Big 3 foes had a big fight feel similar to the Ali/Frazier/Foreman era of heavyweight boxing.
Nadal gained legions of fans with his wild lassoing forehand and never surrender attitude. VAMOS!
Lendl was the Terminator, an emotionless robot who put away opponents with silent efficiency.
Bjorn was the coolest cat on the planet, and Yannick wasn't far behind.
JMac was one of America's first Anti-Heroes, who epitomized the swagger and attitude of New York City.
Agassi was the badboy rock star, a worthy successor to McEnroe. And he even dated Brook Shields, or was that Michael Jackson?
But what of NextGen? They can't beat the Big 3 who are between 34 and 40 years of age. They cry and pout and whine after losing in Slams. None of them is memorable either for a distinctive style of play, or for a key Slam victory, a distinctive look or personality or anything for that matter. Not only is NextGen not capable of breaking through to a Slam victory, they aren't even entertaining or interesting on the way to losing. They are the first generic, house brand generation of tennis.
