2nd worst team in the AFC West beating the best team in the AFC. Again, this is the worst division in the NFL? Anyone want to retract that statement?

This game is going the way any typical Raven game on the west coast goes. And its a typical late season run by SD that they pull off every year.

Seattle proved that record doesn't matter just get in the dance and anyone can win.

i went to my first nfl/football game (chargers v ravens). had a great time! throat is sore...almost lost my voice. great seats...and i'm kicking myself for not bringing my camera (dslr) as i didn't want to worry about it...

and the team winning that division got smoked by the leading AFC east team so whats your point?

And the Saints lost to the Rams, so I guess they just plain suck. Same with the overrated Packers losing to the Chiefs. (note: I don't think the Saints suck or the Pack are overrated, I'm just being facetious)

Point is, the AFC West certainly isn't as bad as Fifth Set seems to think it is. I'd say the AFC West top to bottom is better than the NFC East, which is overrated year after year after year. The Giants and Cowboys both choke in December. The Redskins are a joke yet somehow still swept the Giants. And the Eagles sucked for the first 3 months yet could still somehow win the division.

Cmon man. Everyone knows the AFC W and NFC W are the worst divs in football.

Based on what? The worst team in the NFC West beat the 3rd best team in the NFC, the Seahawks slaughtered the Eagles and beat the Giants, the Cards beat the Boys, and the Niners just smoked the Steelers and have the 2nd best record in the NFL. So it's obviously not the NFC West.

The NFC East year after year is overrated. Only reason people think it is great is the East Coast bias of the media in overhyping the Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants. This year it's the worst division in the NFL. Nothing wrong with that, at least I'm not slandering it and saying they don't deserve a playoff spot like that guy is to the AFC West.

So what? And the Giants beat the Pats. Just cause the Chefs beat the Pack does not mean the Pack suck or the AFC W is great. Single game upsets here and there do not a team, or a season, or a division, make.

I would like to see the inter-divisional records for the past few years, but don't have the time...anyone?

My research department is a bunch of lazy bums but I think the current standings kind of speak for themselves. The AFC West will not offer up a wildcard team this year and the division winner will be a waste of space in the playoffs.

It wasn't always this way. Each and every AFC West team has had some great years in the not too distant past.

The problem is that not a one of them is a great FRANCHISE today. So, say what you will about Tebow (and the Broncos are basically my favorite team) or occasional flashes of talent from San Diego, it will be hard for any one of them to compete for a championship anytime soon.

The NFC East will not offer up a wildcard team this year and the division winner will be a waste of space in the playoffs. See how easy that was?

The standings? You mean the ones where the NFC East leader is 8-6, 2nd place 7-7, 3rd place 6-8, last place 5-9 vs AFC West 8-6, 7-7, 7-7, 6-8?

NFC East is 7-8 vs AFC opponents, AFC West is 8-7 vs NFC opponents

In non-division games
Denver 5-3
Oakland 5-5
SD 5-4
KC 4-6
Total - 19-18

Dallas 6-4
NYG 5-4
Philly 3-7
Wash 3-6
Total - 17-21

Congratulations to the Colts on their first win. Loved the look on Aaron Rogers' face after their loss-the eye roll and half-smile. The American TV show Saturday Night Live did a great spoof of Tebow's praying-he and the team are confronted by Jesus, who tells them he's got 7 billion other people to help out and he can't just drop everything for them. Really funny.

Thanks jbf1 for doing the legwork. OK, I will concede that the NFC E this year is less than sparkling and the AFC W is making a decent show for their standards. There are so many ways to determine whether one group of teams is better than another, though. How about total points for and against for the past 5 yrs?

It is just generally agreed that the NFC E is historically a tough division (along with NFC N) where the teams beat the snot out of each other and they usually end up splitting their matchups. Thus, given the splits, the NFC E division leader already has 3 losses on their record, whereas in a softer division, the front runner can oftern sweep.

Speaking of historical, how about SB appearences for a metric? I did the legwork for this one:

AFC W: 12
NFC E: 19

No one is arguing about history, just this year. Cowboys, Giants, Skins, and Eagles (even though they have 0 SB titles) are all historically strong franchises. But that along with the East Coast bias of the media/ESPN leads to them being put to a higher status in people's minds.

The Raiders are thought of as a joke since 2002 (and in fairness have been) but still have as many playoff wins since 1996 as the Skins and Cowboys combined (4). Yet every year all we hear about is how this is 'the year' for the Cowboys, and how Redskins/Cowboys is one of the greatest rivalries in sports. People act like it's been decades since the Raiders were championship contenders, when we've been contenders more recently than the perenially overhyped Cowboys for one.

But getting back on topic, I'm not making the argument that the AFC West is historically > than NFC East, not that it matters since this is a 2011 discussion. And for 2011 IMO the AFC West is slightly stronger top to bottom.

I agree about the 'Girls being over-hyped (who first invented "America's Team" anyway?). And maybe the Foreskins too. But the Gmen never seem to be on anyone's radar no matter how good they are. Despite a good 1st half of the season with injuries and record setting performances by Eli, no one was talking about them at that time. Whatever..

I think maybe the Raiders rep got tainted by the Jamarcus Russell debacle. They were pretty damn bad for a while there..

BTW, I love the Eagles SB bagel fact. It's always my ace in the hole when I'm debating with an unruly Eagles fan (and they're ALL unruly).

Right now I'm leaning towards a Pats v/s Pack ' Super Bowl " w/ my two dark horse picks being - 49r's/Jets - but that could change.

+1. If the NFC championship game were played on a neutral field then the Saints might have a shot. But I can't see them winning on the tundra... Ravens have a shot at beating the Pats - but I think their D is getting old - and Flacco is still prone to making the one big mess up to blow a game.

You know the NFC is weak when the Niners and Lions both went from woeful for a decade to now the playoffs. Packers look to win the nfc unless the Saints trip them up.

Cowboys...I can't figgure these guys out? They suck and Romo needs to go but Jones won't do it.

Good to see Jesus, I mean Jebow come back down to earth. God's boy takes a hit! Not too good of God to punish him at Christmas time. He must have sinned somewhere or another?

The Bronco's loss lets us see the virtues of patience and perseverance. After all, it's easy to grin when your ship has come in and you have the Bills beat.

Timmy is a boy playing in a man's league, and there are many examples of rookie sucess that subsequently fizzle. Next year will be the acid test.

Poll is up. TT only allows 10 options, and with so many possible combinations I'm not sure if I formatted it in the best way. Let me know if anyone has a better way to do it..

Oh and, the Gmen are alive, Dallas has practically no running game, and Romo' throwing hand is all banged up. Go Big Blue!

Rivers is leading the league in INTs and made the Pro Bowl team. Pro Bowl is officially a joke. As much as I don't like Tebow, I hate Rivers even more. Tebow definitely more deserving this year than Rivers, though Dalton or Flacco probably should have made it over both of them.

Not time for a playoff poll yet.

The Poll should be who gets the remaining playoff spots?

NFC is down to Cowboys vs Giants winner is in.

But the AFC is full of potential scenarios.

Jets, Raiders, Broncos, Bengals, and Titans all have a methematic chance still.

The Bengals and the Broncos control there own destiny.
Win and they are in.

Bengals vs Ravens
Broncos vs KC
Jets @ Miami
Oakland vs SD
Titans @ Houston

The Jets need to beat MIA and have Titans, Bengals and KC or Oakland lose to grab the 6 seed.

The Raiders need either a Broncos loss, Cincinnati and Tennessee losses, or a Cincinnati loss and Jets win.

Tennesee needs to win and have Cincy lose. Then a win by the Jets coupled with a loss by either Oakland or Denver, or a loss by the Jets paired with victories by Oakland and Denver.

If they all lose its still Cincy and Denver.

Here is what I think will happen

Cincy Loses
Broncos Win
Oakland loses
Titans win
Jets Lose

That would mean Denver is the 4 seed and play Pitt. And Cincy sneaks in still and gets Houston.

NFC should be NYG in as NFC East champ. Cowboys are struggling running the football and Romo is banged up and pretty dumb. NYG should get JPP back to wresck havoc on the passing game.

I think the Saints take it this year. They can score as many points as anyone and have a better defense than the Packers or the the Patriots.

In the AFC, I like the Ravens.

The Ravens got a chance, but I still dont trust Flacco on the road especially if that road is in NE when its 25 degrees.

It possible Pitt get NE in the 2nd Rd as long as Houston wins (but with no Schuab I dont think they can beat who is left. Yes I'm penciling Pitt in to beat whoever wins the AFC West.

So we will probably get Pitt at Bmore 2nd round. I dont know if Bmore can beat Pitt 3 times in one year, especially with Flakky Joe in a big playoff game.

So Pitt at NE to go to the Bowl. NE can't defend good enough to stop the speedy Pitt WR's and I think Pitt wins its third road playoff game.

NFC I think Packers and Saints are the top class. But the Lions can bring the pain as well and I think they beat the NFC East team in the 1st round.

I think the Saints get by the Falcons.

So we got Lions packers at lambeau. Packers wont lose to division Rival at Home this time of year they advance.

Saints go to SF to play 49ers. If you think I think Alex Smith can win a playoff game you are wrong. Saints win.

Saints at Packers to go to the Bowl. both teams have flaws on Defense, both teams dont run the ball very well. Saints have more more RB's and have a traditionl style offense. Pack spreads it out alot.

Packers give up alot of yards on defense trying to create turnovers. Saint blitz alot giving teams that can block the chance to make big plays.

I think Rodgers does just enough to make those couple big plays that are needed, Saint miss a FG (45ish yards) in the cold weather at packers win 27-24.

Pitt then gets two weeks to get healthy and there fast recievers get to run all over the dome. I think Pitt wins SB 35-24.

But I hope I'm wrong.

Also I will edit this after this week if the sedding changes.

Still can't believe that the Broncos are one home win against a bad team away from a division championship. Looked done after that 1-4 start.

They dont even have to win as long as the Raiders lose. I fullu expect Rivers to throw for 350yds and three or four touchdowns and the Charges to win by double digits.

Or the Raiders will win and there will be 5 minutes left in Broncos game with the Broncos losing by 13 points. Tebow will go back to pass and fumble only it will go right into the hands of an offensive lineman who then runbles 25 yards and pitches it back to the RB who finishes the rest of run for a TD. There will be enough time left to kick off and stop them, only the return breaks it lose and before stepping across the line accidemtly fumbles it out of the end zone and the Broncos get a Touchback. Then Tebow completes a couple passes makes a couple runs before completing one more pass to himself for 25 yards and a score. How do you comlpete a pass to yourself you ask? Tebow will find a way.

Agreed, I was shocked when I saw Rivers made it. I wouldve had Dalton as the 3rd QB in AFC and Tebow as 1st alternate before Rivers.

LOL, you forgot the part about Denver's field goal kicker having a bad case of the runs, Tebow having to substitute for him and Timmy kicking a 75 yard field goal to even keep 'em within 13.

Oakland loses based on what? I know we've looked terrible for the past month, but we always seem to play well against SD (3 straight wins now) and SD seems to have given up last week on lame duck Norv. Not saying it's a lock, but its at home with the playoffs on the line. Rivers is more likely to throw 3 INTs than 3 TDs tbh.

The blame game begins for the Jets. Drama coming up...

49ers go 13-3! 1st round bye, too.

Man did Sanchez look terrible in that game.

I'm trying to watch the Broncos. It is not good television. It would be fitting if both the Broncos and Raiders lost today. Lost opportunity personified.

I believe that if both teams lose, then a girls high school basketball team of Kyle Orton's choice will represent the AFC West in the playoffs. I'm not sure about these complex tiebreaker rules though, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Denver chokes against the Chiefs. But looks like they'll win the division thanks to the Chargers beating up the Raiders.

I was wrong guys, the Broncos win the division based on the 3rd tiebreaker, which is record against common opponents.

Apparently, the Broncos were 1-0 against the Costa Rican Olympic curling team. The Raiders lost a close one to those guys.

The Broncos will be in the playoffs. Albeit probably not for long.
