Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has expressed his disappointment at what he said was a lack of support from former Australian men’s champions during his title charge, calling himself an “outcast”.
In surprising comments uttered when asked about what it would be like to join the illustrious list of Australian champions at Wimbledon, Kyrgios said one former player was a notable exception - Davis Cup captain and the last Australian man to win in London, Lleyton Hewitt.
“As for the greats of Australian tennis, they haven’t always been the nicest to me personally,” said Kyrgios, who will play former world No.1 Novak Djokovic in Sunday night’s final (AEST).
“They haven’t always been supportive. They haven’t been supportive these two weeks. So it’s hard for me to kind of read things that they say about me.”
Another Wimbledon champion, 1987 winner Pat Cash, had Kyrgios in his sights, saying the controversial Canberra showman was turning the game into a circus, following his behaviour during the third-round win over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
“It’s pretty sad because I don’t get any support from any of the other Australian tennis players, the male side,” said Kyrgios.
