Nickb's Poly Reviews

I've never tried the regular Pro Hurricane, but the PHT is a pretty good poly. In my opinion, it is the second best on the market, next to Luxilon BB ALU power. The PHT has fairly good tension maintenance, and is very durable. People also may disagree with me on this, but I actually felt that it had a pretty soft feel, especially for a poly. I would recommend it more for hybird use than for a full stringbed. Hope this helps.

For me, PHT goes dead on me too fast, which leads me to believe that I'm wasting my money on the VS Gut crosses. I honestly love it and I play amazingly when its fresh, for example, like today I used a fresh string job of PHT/VS Gut and it felt amazing. However, the other sticks I have are old string jobs and they feel dead and not enough pop. Just my $.02

I am sorry if this has been asked but I don't have enough time to read through 68 pages of information :)!

What do you guys think of Babolat Pro Hurricane?
Durability-Regular
Power-Tour
Spin-Tour by a tiny bit
Control-Regular
Comfort-Tour
Tension Maintenance-?

This is just my opinion from when I used to use these strings. I used them when I wasn't as good and couldn't appreciate the effect of poly strings as much as I do now, so this isn't a very good thing to go off of.

hey nickb, another p2 comparison for ya :)

im an aggressive baseliner, with heavy spin off both sides. I prefer spin and control over power and touch.

how do these compare to p2:
Pacific Poly Force Original 17
Pacific Poly Force Xtreme 16L
Pacific X Force 17
Pacific Poly Force Original 16L
KLIP Optic Nerve 17
KLIP K-Boom 17
Signum Pro Poly-Speed Spin 16
Signum Pro Poly Megaforce 16

and out of the list, which 3 do you suggest to most for someone to try out?

with the dwindling economy, i gotta keep my budget low, but i want to keep my game at its best.

thanks again!

I dont think ALU Power works well with a multi cross...the cross goes mushy and the poly loses tension leaving little control. Try a solid core synthetic gut cross like Gosen JC, Forten Sweet etc...or full Big Banger ALU Power.

Most players get at least 10 hours of good playing time out of ALU.

Nick

I think I can agree with you Nick . My first adventure with a poly hybrid (Alu Power Mains, Wilson Reaction 16 Crosses) was decidedly underwhelming. The overall feel was quite nice (solid but comfortable and softer than I was expecting), however, the response was nothing to write home about. While I had good control it just seemed as though I wasn't getting any real grip (purchase) on the ball. I certainly didn't feel any improvement in terms of spin (on the contrary, a reduction in spin) and actually think that I got a lot more out of a full Gosen JC 16 or Head PPS16 string job. Initially I thought that the strings just needed time to settle but there was no change (apart from a tension drop) after 10 hard sets. The Reaction also started fraying after 3 sets (could have been sooner but I wasn't paying attention). Tension drop has been along the lines of what I'd been advised -around 10lbs - and has settled for the moment.

The Good: significantly more comfortable than I was expecting, nice solid response
The Bad: a 'slippery' response that allowed for less 'grip' and, subsequently, spin than I was finding with a basic 16g nylon.

A clubmate has offered to re-string the crosses for me and has suggested I give Hextreme, the string he uses, a try. What are you thoughts on that one?

Hey nick,
im currently using PHT and its working great for me.
so can u recommend a string that plays like PHT but loses tension slower?
would BBO or BBo rough be better?
i also want to know about the spin because i play with a lot of topspin and slices. thanks

Nick has left the boards for now. I guess you'll have to ask elsewhere for advice on strings.

Sonic, try the BBO, it holds tension much better than PHT, it plays softer but not soft, has better pop than PHT and is comfortable to boot. The BBOR is a different animal. It's much stiffer and I did not like it at all. Nick warned me to stay away from it, I didn't listen and wish that I had. Nick usually gets it right!! He turned me on to BBO and it's my go to string setup now at 57/54.

Sonic,

I am in the same situation as you. I have 6 polys I am going to try.

They are

Pro Supex Big Ace 17
Pro Supex Blue Gear 17
Topspin Cyber Blue 17 (anyone know more about it?)
Technifibre Pro Line 2 17 (anyone know more about it?)
Luxilon Big Banger Original
Leopard Control 17 (anyone know more about it?)

If you are getting Leopard you just may as well get the Premier Ace instead. Leopard Plus control is repackaged Premier Ace.

As for the string, it is quite stiff, low powered, but excellent control. No suh thing as Tecnifibre Pro Line 2, but the Kirschbaum Pro Line 2 is not bad of a string overall.

Hey, PROTENNIS63.
I got a Premier Ace set, it says maximum tension = 55 or something like that.. Will it snap if I go higher??

btw.. wtf... where is Nickb??

Hey PROTENNIS63,

I saw your siggy said that you use Big Ace 17 @ 58.
I am also planning to try out Big Ace 17 , yet I am not sure if I should use my normal Gut in the crosses, like I did with my PHT.

Any suggestions?
If I used Gut, is 57/59 sound good? with the big ace in the mains and gut in the cross, and so on and so forth with all my other polys?

doesn't natural gut kind of defeat the whole Pro Supex ideal... good string cheap! ;) why not try a Pro Supex multi, which is less expensive... you can string a whole racquet with about $6-$7 worth of string...

but hey, if you got gut, and that works for you go for it... but for me, if i was playing with natural gut and wanted to hybrid with poly, i would go up the food chain a bit...

let us know how BA plays with Ngut...

PT63 or anyone else... does Pro Supex make or re-package a natural gut?

what does going up the food chain to you mean?
any specific type of poly ?

and yeah i will let u know about how it plays im probably going to use my nat gut for all my polys im using.

Tecnifibre Pro Red Code or Kirschbaum Proline II? I think you mixed them up. :)

Ok, personally I found the Tecnifibre Pro Red Code to be much stiffer and more harsh than the the Kirschbaum Proline, which was unbelievably soft for a poly. However, the Tecnifibre held tension much better and is more durable. Now, the Proline's tension maintenance wasn't poor, it just wasn't as exceptional as the Pro Red Code. The Proline felt dead after about 25-30 hours, and the Pro Red Code after about 45-50. The Pro Red Code's durability, even for a poly, was astounding. I've had it at 16g, strung at 61 lbs, for about a month, and even though it has gone pretty dead, it still has not broke. The Kirschbaum broke after about 35 hrs. (3 weeks for me) I actually found that the stiffer feel of the Tecnifibre was welcome in some situations (esp. serving), but I would definitely use it in a hybrid, whereas the Kirschbaum would be ideal as a full stringbed. Both are very good polys, and are very different. Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention that I hit with heavy topspin on pretty much everything, so string durability would probably differ between us.

Hi Nickb

I am currently using Dunlop AG100 with Cyberflash 50lb. which tension i should try if I use Pro supex Big ace 1.22. thank you

CC no point asking NB, he left the boards a couple of weeks ago indefinitely.

I have used the BA 1.22 a lot and would recommend upping the tension a bit compared to CF as BA is softer and more powerful. 54lbs should be about right. i used it at 55lbs in my M-fil 300 and that felt about right. some people advocate stringing it at the same tension as syn gut but it might feel a bit boardy strung too high.

Hey 1012007, played with the 1.17 tonight. Its great. Possibly softer then my premier ace/syngut titan hybrid. Definately not lacking power and will have to see how durability is.

Good to hear... if you move a cross, you can see how much a main has worn away. That will give you some idea into how many seconds are left:)

to nickb, I see from your signature that you've switched to the prestige MP. did you find a major drop off in spin when switching? I just ordered to demo this stick, and it should be coming in for me as expected.

mate u should also review msv hex. To me this is the most underrated string going. Everyone makes the same mistake of stringing it too tight!!!. String it up at 52lbs and let the magic happen. There is no better string out there at the moment unless u can affort to cut out alu power every time u play.

I'm about to string with MSV Focus Hex, I'll follow your advise..........
do you string full bed with MSV or hybrid? I have Mid Plus frame open pattern (yonex rdx 500)
thanks

I finally tried Blue Gear...with Maxim touch crosses...

WHAT A STRING!
Powerful..control oriented...confortable...

An it produces a LOT of spin...

Best poly i've ever played with!

Nick's back! Let it be known that this post marks the resurrection of this thread. :)

On a more serious note, Nick, how would you compare the spin qualities of BBO 1.30 to Tecnifibre PRC 1.30?

Nick,

Iam picking up a MG Prestige MP today... how do you string yours?

I was thinking Lux ALU Rough m's with X1 red x's....

J, what gauge will you do the X1 in? 17, since it's a tight pattern. That should be a nice stick. They seem to swing pretty sweetly and lightly so you should really be able to whip that thing through the strike zone. I wish I used a 3/8 instead of a 1/4 grip. It's impossible to find used ones on here in the 1/4 size. I've had my eye on the Pres Pro lately after figuring that the mid was just too small for my style of play.

Nick, welcome back mate. Did you ever hit with Gamma Zo tour. I tried some in the 1.30 and really liked it.

The problem for me was that I did not get any better life out of it than the ALU and the price was no cheaper. Still, it had some nice pop to it. Almost like a Luxilon version of BA :)

Its a terrific racquet. I have mine currently with Babolat VS 17 and it hits and feels very nice. Great all around racquet. are you all-around, S&V or baseline player?

yeah i got some x1 and alur laying around (life is tough, huh??) the x1 is 17g. i have been playing alur with some excellerator in a rds003, it has a springy-powerful-but control feel.

i hope you find a Pro, it took me awhile to find someone who would give up their MGMP :)

ahhh, gut! i gotta get my hands on some gut! sounds great... what tension?

btw... (i think we know we are about the same age:) ...old Phillies fans!) S&V was my game years ago... now i sit back more, but i am still agressive!

Hey PED. Sent you a couple emails recently. Did you get them?

I currently have it strung at 58#'s. My next gut will be strung at 60 #'s.

Niced being a Phillies fan...too bad about Chase. That will really hurt.

I am the same way. I will S&V depending on the player. If they have weak serves, I am at the net on all 1st serves and some 2nd. I play aggressive while playing doubles. Singles depends on the other player.

Hey,

No comparison...BBO provides much more spin, control AND power. PRC feels harsh to me and lacking in comparison. Pay the extra for luxilon.

Hi JCS,

I have tried a load of different stuff in mine (no surprise there!).

My fav has been PSGD strung at 58...but im getting less than 3 hours play from it so ive gone back to match pro poly 1.25.

Luxilon didnt feel right...lacking pop. I would go for a soft co-poly or hybrid. What you have should work well.

Im a bit pissed off right now...1 of mine just cracked!

Nick
