Nike 2025 General Thread

In years past, the AO gear ends up piling up at retailers/e*ay on steep discounts despite Nike putting in huge efforts. A disproportional amount of my gear is AO bc of how cheap you can usually find it. Maybe they decided this year to scale back and save the good stuff for the second half of the year

@gino I just bought something you're gonna love or hate. Alcaraz PE sleeveless from '23 USO
What percentage of a discount what you say you bought previous collections for?
I know their last season purple tank top is on sale but trying to figure out if I should hold out for a larger discount.

1. They absolutely lost Musetti. They may not view it that way because he doesn't look the way they want. But it was a big loss for them. I'm pretty sure he wanted an actual paying deal and they told him to get lost

2. The Sinner deal is looking like a massive cockup now. He was never "their type" but they went with the hype. And now, post-clostebol drama, he's tarnished--and set to make $150mm over ten years. On top of that has been a diva especially compared to Carlos who is playing the last year of his $1mm/yr rookie contract and hasn't done any prima donna crap like Sinner has.

They could've let Sinner go and kept multiple other players. Sinner isn't known for his fashion sense/style/panache and would have been a great signing for Adidas
I cant see why Nike “needs” Musetti. Good player for sure but average results. I like him though and truly hopes he will get a slam some day. But with Sinner who is the biggest sportstar in Italy Nike doesn’t really need to pay any thing more to maximise that market.

And Nikes “type” are Winners and number ones. They want to be associated with the absolute best; their slogan for the Olympics was “winning is everything”. They bet on upcoming stars, keep them if they perform and ditch them if they don’t.

Average results in 2024: bronze medal in singles, Wimbledon SF and Queen's final, won more matches on grass than anyone else, finished inside the Top 20

These are not "average" results

I was watching some gym practices for Alcaraz and he will apparently use the same Vapor 11 customs he used last year in a volt/green colorway. His team is using the actual Vapor 12’s. I don’t know if this is because the 12’s aren’t released yet or is it because he just prefers his customs. It seems like Rune is also back to the Vapor Pro 1’s

And I wonder if Nike has any plans to make signature lines for WTA players. I would expect Sabalenka to have one really soon since she just got her own ad and if Zheng gets better and wins slams then I’m pretty sure she’ll get one too

Obviously great results but he’s not winning anything.
I do agree on his aesthetics but again Nike wants (oppose to a few years ago) keep their portfolio small with only a handful of players they believe are dominating
Personally I hope Musetti will get a slam some day but I’m not sure he will. Like tsitsipas; can see him as a very solid top 10 for a long time even going up to world 2-3

I understand, but then you add his movie star looks and elegant game you have box office gold

Musetti is a master of getting the color pairings right, he always nailed his Nike fits
Have nike stopped making swoosh bandana's given noone pro is left to wear them?

Nadal retired, musetti gone, fritz gone, rublev gone only shapovalov left

Movie star looks? Huh?

I almost get the feeling that you're in love with Musetti...

I'm no connoisseur here but I feel like he could be the best looking guy on tour. If his competitors are Mats and Grigor I think he stacks up pretty well. I jokingly call him Lorenzo Atreides. I come from a media/politics upbringing so I involuntarily evaluate this stuff. Looks, names, etc. all matter when determining marketability or electability

Maybe ask @MichaelNadal but he has weird taste. He probably likes Cressy better

Top Athletes like Carlitos have great bargaining power. If he said no to your shoes, you can only make him a pair of customs.
The only question now is who will wear the real Vapor 12 on court.
Many here were expecting most if not all of the pros switching to Vapor 12.

That's the question. I wonder about how much is the impact of Sinner/Alcaraz not wearing the new shoes. I'd guess is quite big, once they should be the two out of three players, along with Djokovic, that people get what they're using

If you're Alcaraz or Nadal, they will build you a special shoe and make sure to market the newest shoe in the same colorscheme

If you're Dimitrov or below, you need to pay for your own shoe if you want to play the 9.5s probably

Back into his PE he goes. I have minimum knowledge on marketing/sales, but to have your top performance players wearing old shoes from a couple of gens ago, while you've just released 2 new models. That's not a great sign to me
This kit is actually nice better on person. Second most tennis players are superstitious so changing to a totally different shoe is outrageous to them.

I get that it is a big change, but I would expect at least the shoes to be as close to the VP12 cosmetics as possible, as they did with the 11. I get that there is plenty of differences like the lacing, lateral piece,..., and to me the major difference would be the outsole, which I wouldn't be surprised if Alcaraz never changes them throughout his career

At some point you have to stop blaming the company

Unless we really want to argue that the Zoom Zero is a better shoe than the GP Turbo and that's why Sinner continues to wear it.

Do we ? If the two best athletes are wearing shoes not available to consumers, I think that’s something we can perpetually blame on the company (one for not legally assuring they would have to use new shoes & two not building good enough retail shoes for them to slot into). If you can get Nadal (most superstitious player ever) into 10+ uppers in his career, you theoretically should be able to do the same with these two

IMO this miss is worse then letting the whole other cast of characters go that endorsed retail shoes (Lore, Frances, etc). Also amplifies that issue. So now they have really only Draper at the top tier of the atp wearing a shoe consumers can buy. If the strategy is to sell GP challenge pros to pickleball players they are doing an exceptional job. We can praise them for inking sinner and alcaraz, but also be critical of how they are using their likeness imo (no logos, old shoes, no sig gear)

Apparently Nike does not share your opinion. Or they would not have dropped him.

Do you think there is any shoe that can get Sinner out of Zoom Zeros?

This isn't a lot different to racquets. Are Head and Wilson trash because their pros are all using pro stocks with paint jobs?

Your logic would say yes, those companies are failing because the pros aren't using their retail racquets.

They clearly don't. They like certain types of looks, and I will leave it at that.
Don't agree with you on this one
I think I know what you mean when you say looks, but Sinner clearly does not have the "Nike look", and Nikes big golf star Scottie Scheffler definitely doesn't either. Like ive stated before; Nike wants to be associated with winning and number ones, and thats because tennis is a pretty small community, but if you ask the average sports fan, they probably know who Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik sinner are, and these two are shown in regular media and in newspapers, etc.. No one outside of tennis knows Musetti or Francis Tiafoe.

Right, Sinner doesn't have the Nike look and that is why I think it's not really a happy marriage

Tiafoe had the look they want. Musetti doesn't. So I predicted that they would cut Musetti loose, but I didn't see Tiafoe coming.

They want to be associated with winning and #1s, yet they make more PE gear for Nick Kyrgios than they do for Sinner.

If that's the case, I guess they can take Sinner and Alcaraz, specially Alcaraz, which I just don't see leaving Nike, and make a personal shoe line for them according to their shoe taste and needs in a shoe, and put it on the market. I guess it would be even possible to get the 1:1 shoes, cause I don't think they would ask for something that would make it more expensive than retail, like Federer with his custom outsole with the carbon fiber shank.

Another issue is that it seems that maybe for Sinner and Alcaraz they've realised that the shoes they're wearing right now are nearly perfect for them and they don't need any changes. Which could lead to a never discontinued shoe as long as they're playing

I didn't hear the complaint nearly as much when Rafa was playing with his CB/Cage hybrids.

In Sinner's case they would just be retroing the Air Zoom Zero. Ok. That's one. Let's do that--that shoe sold really well and I'm sure it would make tons of money for them

In Carlos's case you have a VP1 outsole on a Vapor 11 upper. Durability would be an issue and customers would complain as they did with the Vapor 9.5

V11s are a much more durable shoe than the 9/9.5/X

This is like being a fan of a car company and having to listen to people complain that all the new cars are bloated and stupid, and all they want is an old Integra or 3-series from the 90s and why can't we just have that too?

Yeah I agree with you on that one with Nick - thats weird.

About Tiafoe I am as suprised as you are. He really rocks thier outfits. Remember the 2022 AO open outfit he wore with the crazy colors and sleeve less shirt? Really cool brandning and NO ONE could have pulled it of except him. Imagine Sinner in that...

Yeah. They were doing PE/limited run stuff for him like they did for Dimitrov. I bought that purple tank from last year.

2022? I think you mean 2023. Alcaraz and him both had PE sleeveless versions of the retail Slam crew.

Challenge accepted on "no one else could wear that"--I've got one in the mail

I would have expected Alcaraz with vp12 and sole Vp1 as he had tested before the A.O. 2025...
The conditions were "good", but a few days before he put the custom vp1 back on!
In basketball, even if it is a slightly different situation, the various testimonials have personalized shoes, which can also be purchased by ordinary people...
Virtually every brand, except Nike, produces shoes for the main players, which can also be purchased by ordinary people; Lacoste, Asics (Djokovic, Berrettini, De Minaur...), Adidas su tutti (e.g. Zverev - deflant speed 2, Tsitsipas and Aliassime - Barricade 13)...
