Nike Camp-Lawrenceville, NJ

My kid just came back from a Nike Camp in Lawrenceville, NJ. My take is do NOT sign up unless you have a high school boy. First of all, there were not that many girls, so the camp was basically geared toward boys. We signed her up for the high school camp, and because there were not enough players, she was paired up with a 9-yr old girl for doubles and pitched against 16-18 yr old boys for singles. Every camper, regardless of age or gender, must do the exact number of pushups and intense workouts. She said some of the younger kids couldn't do that many pushups or drills, and everyone were "punished" to do more because of that.

All the excessive workouts, coupled with playing against boys for single matches, she came home with both of her legs injured. It's been 2 weeks since she's back, and her injuries had caused her to miss 2 USTA tournaments. Her school tryout is coming up soon, and her doctor said she may not recover enough for that tryout. She was going for the first single spot on her high school team, and she may miss out on that opportunity because of this camp.

She said the evening activities were completely hijacked by the older boys also. They'd put all of them in the yard, and the boys would take over all the balls and wouldn't pass them to the girls. The girls ended up just standing around doing nothing. She would go back to her room with no time to even call home.

My advise is to not send your daughter or any younger children there. The people who run the camp do not seem like they know what they are doing and seem to be kids themselves who do not know how to adequately run a safe camp.
