~Nike Court Ballistec 2.3 REVIEW~

It's been awhile since I've written a review but I'm gonna just go straight to it.
Scores out of 10, 10 bein GODLY

About me: I only play on hard court. For pretty much the whole time I've used this shoe, I've hit atleast 5 days a week 2 hours a day, sometimes 7 days and more than 2 hours a day. I'm a pretty heavy toe-dragger. I have medium wide feet with medium-high arches

NM23WB-1.jpg

(I have the black version)

Fit:
Snug. Secure. A bit small in the toebox is my only complaint.
The arch is medium-low so I used insoles (Spenco Total Support) for most of the time I've hit with this shoe but the last month or so I've been using the standard insoles to get more space in the toebox.
Otherwise, the shoe fit almost perfectly. When I tried them on in the store, they felt great right away. They're not quite low to the ground but I don't have a problem with that.
The materials in the shoe are soft and stretch abit after wearing them around abit but not too much. At first the toebox was really small but it stretched out to a bearable amount. Also because the toebox was somewhat small, there was abit of problem with blisters. Some of the other people I know with this shoe did note that the shoe gave them blisters on their feet. I got some calluses but they didn't become full on blisters. Now I tape up my feet abit before playing and that does the trick.
There was some break-in needed, mostly for fit. The shoe plays quite comfortably right out of the box but as the toebox was abit small, I needed abit more time to get it to stretch abit. If the toebox were abit more roomy, I'd have given the shoe a 9.5
Score: 9/10

Durability:
A perfect shoe IMO would need to be worn out at 5 months and I grade other shoes according to that scale along with durability of the uppers and laces.
These shoes first wore out at 3.5 months and now are approaching the 4th month. My right shoe has most of the wearing at the medial front areas and both shoes have a bit of wearing at the heel. The midsole is actually holding quite well. Laces were nice and durable and for the most part the uppers as well. On my left shoe, the rubber where the shoe flexes has torn a tiny bit but not very much.
Score: 8/10

Ventilation:

There is a ton of mesh on this shoe. Your whole foot is surrounded by it and the majority of the upper has numerous holes. This shoe really does breathe.
Score: 9.5/10

Traction:
Pretty good in this catagory as well. There was no slipping or sliding at all for me and I felt confident when making quick stops and turns.
That said, it didn't have that super grippy feel. Also, some of my other friends who used this shoe did have abit of slipping.
Score: 9/10

Comfort:
No complaints here. Above average cushioning for sure. There is quite abit of foam in the heel.
It doesn't have a super cushy feel but I've never had any pain or soreness in the feet while playing with these shoe.
Even when playing with the standard insoles, the cushioning was good.
The uppers are nice and soft and stretch to fit your feet.
Score: 9/10

Stability:

Because of all the soft material in the upper, I thought stability might suffer but it did not.
Solid shoe. These shoes support the feet very well. There is enough sturdy material around the heel and forefoot to counter the shoes flexibility and keep it nice and stable.
My feet were nicely locked in place without sacrificing flexibility and being too rigid
Score: 9/10

Bottom line:
Fantastic shoe. Definitely my new favorite. With the exception of the small-ish toebox, the feel and feel of the shoe is great. It performs well in all categories without sacrificing something in another.
I would definitely get another pair but I really like the black colorway but they are out of my size on Nike.com.

From here, I might look into trying the Propulse 2s or Barricade 6s.
Thanks for reading, and stay tuned :)

I almost switched from barricades to the 2.3 Ballistecs but the toe box didn't feel right at all for my foot. It felt like my toes were jammed into a funnel at the end with room past the middle toes. I even tried sizing down and then it was too crampt on the end toes.

If it wasn't for my misshapen foot I'd love to use the 2.3 Ballistecs. They look amazing.

Nice. So they gave you a replacement pair? I was expecting a voucher. If they give me a replacement, I hope they can give me a .5 size up if I request.

Yeah the toebox is my only complaint. While it did stretch, I still would like abit more room

Did you get a half size bigger in your 2.3 compared to your 1.3? I got a size 10 in 1.3s. So I should get 10.5s in 2.3?

I am probably the most picky person when it comes to fit of shoes. So, I was worried about the fit of 2.3s before buying.

I tried some 1.3s last year and needed half-size larger. This year, with 2.3s, I ordered 8.5s, which is my regular size. The toe box is slightly snug, but not so much as to warrant going up half-size. For me, true to size with 2.3s.

This is my tennis shoe history for Nike

Cage I - 10.5
Cage II - 10.5
Vapor VI - 10.5
CB 1.3 - 10
CB 2.3 - ???

So based on that should I be leaning towards a 10.5 for the 2.3s?

I dont know who you guys are that give nike 10, but you guys obviously havent use great shoes, nikes arent that light/quick/breathable.
Lottos and diadoras are WAY better, and the Original asiscs RES, (though they didnt last long)

Can you give feedback, on the toe fit? I have the 1.3's and they are still rubbing the top of my pinky, will the 2.3's do the same

How can anyone like this shoe? It's totally beyond me.
Outsole is way too stiff/rigid.
Only thing I liked about it was the cushioning in the heel.

So you say Nike shoes suck and aren't worth a 10 rating and we should buy Lotta and Diadora but yet you have a pair of 1.3.

Interesting.

the ONLY reason I bougth them was because is was the LTD ballistecs, I only played in them twice, before is said "screw this", now they are just my hang out shoes, I dont even lace them up(thats about the only thing the unitounge is good for!)

I didn't have a problem with the outsole being stiff. One would kind of expect it from a shoe with a 6 month durability guarantee.
I guess different people like different things.

Can you point out where anyone in this thread gave this shoe a 10/10? Also, you haven't tried the 2.3 so you can't comment on it. And please don't say "Nikes aren't that light/quick breathable." Have you tried any other Nike shoes other than the 1.3s? If not, please don't make assumptions about ALL Nike shoes based off of ONE shoe.

No, I've never tried any Lotto shoes. I tried one pair of Diadoras in a shop and didn't like them (but you don't hear me saying all Diadoras suck) and I hear lots of good things about the Resolutions. But none of their shoes seem to offer the promise of durability and that is a very important factor in determining a good shoe for me (and lots of players).

Thank you for the review. Can you comment on mobility please?

They definitely aren't the quickest or lightest shoes. At first they can feel abit clunky because of the weight (relative to other shoes, if you're not coming from another heavier shoe). Also, there is quite abit of foam (especially in the heel) so the shoe is somewhat high off the ground which can add to the clunkiness. But after you get used to them, you don't really notice unless you switch back to a lighter/lower shoe.

The reason they feel clunky is the padding.

I don't think they are a slow moving shoe at all.

Lace them up tight and you're good to go.

well the only diadora ive ever worn are the speedzone speed pro and speed pro 2 and 3, and they were the best match day shoe ever!

I JUST tried on some 2.3s and Eh.... heel fit was a little loose, pinky toe area was still rubbing. I wouldnt play a match in them.
they feel tight in all the wrong areas and loose in all the right ones!!

what sucks the most is they have a flat feel to them, maybe its just the unrounded heel, oh and the insole doesnt cup your heel enough.... sorry I think made better shoes 10 yrs ago.

BTW i have 2 pairs of nike BFII's, before I found diadoras!!!

Interesting, this is exactly how I feel about the fit of the barricades. Nike shoes fit me like a glove though.

The definitely have better support than Vapor Lunarlite but they are not as fast and feel clunky compared to the Vapor VI which has toe box issues and lack durability.

I have gotten used to it and for the time being, they will have to do until Nike fixes the Vapor Lunarlite to add better lateral support. It makes me wonder why shoe companies have such a hard time getting the right pair of shoes. Every time they fix something, they mess else up. They are good pair of shoes but the toe box is quite cramp and my toes feel like they are being jammed.

My toes were jammed in CC Genius II, CB 2.3 Toebox is perfect for me.

LoL.

Tell that to the 100s of people that have posted here that they are the gsoat. Also, read the customer reviews. The evidence is overwhelming.

CB 2.3 is the ultimate shoe for wide feet. Especially mine.

:)

Hmmmm. I am now on the hunt for a black/cyber/grey pair in an 8.5

I have been sold... lol

I'm sorry, but for me the best shoe is the Propulse 2, followed by the Barricade 5.
There is no greatest shoe of all time, there is only the greatest shoe for your feet because they're all different.

Yeah agreed, I'm just looking for advice from people with high arches and wide feet. I thought the Lunarlite Vapor would be a good switch but apparently I was wrong lol. Looking at the reviews on the boards.

Anyways, I have always been a Nike guy (except my breif stint with a green/black pair of Barricade V's) and I'm torn between the three current Nike shoes. The Barricade 6.0 seems to be an exclusively "narrow foot" shoe, so I'll avoid those for now.

If you have any advice to change my mind, I'm ready to listen.

G

most of those people dont have wide feet that have been brainwashed, cause all you can buy is nike in your local store, im guessing you dotn know jack about feet

if they are good for wide feet then why does nike ACTUALLY MAKE a E width tennis shoe specifially for wide feet??

I dont know how a clunky, heavy, toungless, lack luster cushioning shoe can be considered great.

Hey Gino, I fall into that category of fairly wide feet (E) and a medium-to-high arch. Here's a link to a few posts I made about these 3 Nike shoes:

http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=304473&page=6&highlight=tarkowski

The 2.3 is an excellent shoe, as is the 2K10. Depends on what you want out of a shoe... but they both fit my size E feet just fine.

I've got a buddy who loves his cades and recently bought some VI's. He loves them... and he has wide feet as well. I have not tried them, but I can tell you the Barricade V was certainly wide enough for me... wider than the 2.3 or 2k10. So even if the VI is a little narrower, should be good enough.

Good luck!

Thanks a ton bro! You literally covered all of my bases! I really appreciate it.

In regards to what I look for in a shoe:
I am a junior tournament player training to play college tennis. I live in NorCal and it gets pretty steaming hot on our outdoor carpet courts down here.. I'm looking for something reliable that gives me confidence if I have to slide into a shot or sprint to the net. I consider myself an aggressive base liner, but I can play some decent defense and I love the net. I consider my movement a strength. I previously wore two pairs of CB 1.3's then went to the Breathe Cage II (2 pairs), which was fine I guess. I wasn't amazed per se. I'm currently using a Vapor VI tour (which we all know are becoming very hard to find). I love them, they work from every single area of the court and besides the break in period, are awesome. The new barricades look sweet, but seem too thick, I wish I could play test these shoes before deciding! I look at the guys on the ATP tour and they seem to be split 50/50 between the 2K10 and 2.3. I'm not too fond of the 2K10 colors, but I might just suck it up for the all around performance they offer.

If you have any more suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thanks again,

G

Im starting to think (from the reviews) that these shoes are the best practice shoes you can buy. Great comfort, great durability with a warranty, good breathability, awesome design and good traction. I will look for other lighter and lower to ground shoes for my tournament matches.

Try the Vapor line if you're looking for lighter, lower to the ground.

Otherwise, I wear my CBs for practice and for matches.

if anyone complain about the weight of the shoe don't play tennis if your going to let something so small as that bother you then just dont play

these shoes are great i have terrible flat feet and i dont even have to wear special padding in these, a quick 15 minute break in on the court and i was in love, a real step up from the 1.3. Cushioning was added everywhere they shouldve been. Durability is great.

Hey Gino,

Based on your post, I think you'll really like the 2K10. Like the Vapor VI, it is a very high performance shoe. Of course, it will not last as long as a Ballistec or Barricade, but that's not it's forte. It shines in speed and stability. 2K10 is great for hot summer months as well.

I like rotating a few pairs of shoes and have the Ballistecs for comfort and training. But like you, find my movement and speed one of my key assets and love the Vapor VI and 2K10 for that - especially on match day.

tarkowski,

Thanks for all the great input. I was thinking the same actually! I'll end up picking up a pair pretty soon probably, since the colorway is SO dull. I think I'm going to get it customized. Something along the lines of this....

Thats my stab at Nadal's 2009 Austrailian Breathe Cage II.

What do you guys think?
