Nikolay Davydenko calls NextGen weak - again, and is surprised at Alcaraz' injuries

Not sure I'd call NextGen weak.
Davydenko never did a damn thing in the majors either.

I think by NextGen, OP means med-Zver-tpas gen (not the 2000s generation)
that's definitely a weak generation. 2nd weakest after Rao-Nishi-Dimi gen.

davy was an under-performer at majors given his talent or play in Bo3, but he played well at quite a few majors - RG 05, AO 06, USO 06, RG 07, USO 07, AO 10 etc.

The guy failed to make a single final in 50 Slam appearances. He has no business lecturing these youngsters who have already achieved more than he ever will.

He made 4 slam semis...losing to a peak Federer at 06 USO, 07 RG, 07 USO, and to a steroid-enhanced Puerta at 05 RG. He also lost to Federer at 06 RG and 2010 AO. Today's youngsters are losing to old Nadal, and old (part-time playing) Djokovic.

He beat peak Nadal twice in Masters finals. Today's youngsters have one win over Nadal in a big final, and that didn't happen until 2022!

He won Paris in a BO5 final. Today's youngsters don't know the meaning of winning BO5 finals.

Davydenko has all the business in the world lecturing these youngsters. Hell, all past players do regardless of achievements.

Yes Davy played well in an event where he choked WAY harder than Med did...

AO06 he was ok, Fed was just sub par which made him look better. Anyone who thinks Fed played well at AO06 needs their eyes checked. His level wasn't anywhere near his peak level yet still he wont he event thanks to pushover draw.

Medical help and health in general has gotten significantly better in the last 10 years and it's happening in lots of sports, not just tennis. Look at the world cup, lots of players in their late 30s, nearly 40 are still playing at the top level. Talent is talent and players can play for longer age wise and Djokovic/Nadal are just better players.

Still, Davydenko questioning anything about Alcaraz when he had a lot of injuries himself is kinda hypocritical and he wasn't exactly far off Nadal/Djokovic's generation but fell off form wise far far far before "retirement age" so I think him saying anything at all is a joke.
bull@$* . the nadal that davydenko has a postive h2h over is still much much better physically than the nadal of today. and the nextgen still struggle to beat him especially at slams. its a weak gen today

So what you're saying is, he played well in 4/50 slam appearances? WOW.

Medvedev won the US Open at age 25...

Alcaraz won the US Open too buddy.. sorry to tell you that... or is he already too old?

I'm not talking about Alcaraz. My posts here and in countless other threads continually call out 90s-born players.

Medvedev was lucky to be facing a CYGS-pressured Oldavic. We're talking about a player who would lose to Nadal in five at a slam Rafa hadn't won in 13 years.

You don't seriously buy into that CYGS pressure crap do you? Just an excuse created by Djok fans to help them cope... the fact is, he hasn't been able to win US Open finals most of his whole career...

I'm not here to defend current era greatness... but I'm also not gonna defend a guy who hardly did anything at the majors either... fact is Davydenko was losing to far lesser players than oldal and oldovic on a consistent basis...

He even tanked his match against Dodig in 2013 US Open to avoid Nadal destroying him in the next round... guy drinks his own bathwater... he had to protect his h2h...

Have a good look at who he was losing to at the slams... 40 appearances where he couldn't get past the 4th round... and even that he only reached 4 times... so 36/50 losses before the 4th round...

Yet we have to hear nonsense from Fed fans that he'd dominate today's tour? What a croc of ****

Yeah, going "from baseline to way behind baseline" is "get[ting] "the basics right." Dude, it's clear to me and other semi-experienced amateurs you haven't picked up a tennis racquet in your life. I mean the fact that I had to explain to you why BH is no contest between Sinner and Blake should've made you at least somewhat humble about engaging anyone on "the basics," but if anything your head seems to have gotten even bigger.

He def hasn't picked up a racquet.... I've called him out on that many times...

According to him, this is a player pushed "miles" behind the baseline:

For context, here's where Federer's ball landed:

Deepish but Roddick was primed and set... this was not a forced error...

Confused ... I agree it is a weak gen today, and that's exactly what Terenigma said, that Djokovic/Nadal are just better players than the current weak gen. How is this bull@$*? You seem to agree that it is a weak gen today.

no he says that the nexgen is no weaker than the davydenko generation. he says medical science has kept nadal and djokovic strong even in old age. and i replied nadal is nowhere near the player he was in his prime, and davydenko has a positive h2h on him and next gen and current gen struggle to beat nadal.

06 AO, not 06 RG.
but yes, I agree with the essence of your post.

2009 Roddick vs 2014 Fed 10 matches?

Ok, so Djokovic, Nadal AND Davydenko are better than Zebra, Tsitsi and Med. Agreed?

I have played tennis.

According to him, this is a player pushed "miles" behind the baseline:

I never said miles behind the baseline at all. Blatant lie.
What I said was federer forced the error with his BH.
The miles beyond/behind the baseline was what I quoted from the commentary.

Just wanted to call out 2 blatant lies. Go on with your blithering nonsense otherwise, if you want to.

I just wish everyone would credit Nadal as being one of the best HC players of all time, with 4 USO's (one more than Djokovic).

if by one of the best, like in 2nd half of top 10 in open era then sure.

Federer
Djokovic
Sampras
Agassi
Lendl
Mac
Connors

Nadal has achieved more than Mac/Connors on HC, but they got less chances on HC and they are better players on HC.

I mentioned it in 2 seperate posts before.

Exactly, before. And even if this was the only 0-40 hole Bull had to deal with you can't expect fans to remember that almost a year after the fact.

0-40: med started moving back as soon as he hit the return, not when nadal was about to supposedly unload. anyways nadal had to move back to hit the FH after the return. the return though a floater did land fairly deep.

15-40: The BH CC miss was the bigger error, IMO. I don't even necessarily expect med to come in on the BH you mentioned given he isn't good at the net. nadal could still have passed him. not easy, but more makeable than you think, especially with nadal's CC BH pass.

30-40: definite bad execution on the dropshot. I don't expect med to necessarily make the pass anyways. could have made it, but not an easy one.

40-40: by itself, not a bad miss, but that's the 2nd BH UE in 3 points, no?

So mistakes in the first 4 points from Nadal being down 0-40. All add up, you know?

here itself you can see 2 examples of me not expecting too much from med (about coming into the net and making the pass)

BP #1 - Like I said it was a good 1st serve by Bull, probably his best of the game. Med had to step back somewhat to cover the territory, and that's when Bull took advantage with his well-disguised dropper.

BP #2 - Well, given we know what did happen it's hard to say Med would've been worse off with that foray to the net. Either way I do agree this was his biggest missed opportunity.

BP #3 - Poorly executed or disguised the drop shot itself wasn't a bad choice. Dunno how many droppers Med had hit up to that point but I bet it wasn't many. I say that's being bold or at least trying new things on a BP.

Deuce - Ditto. He was actually taking initiative with that BH. Hardly a bad error.

And the rest of the match was like that. Nothing out of the ordinary, just Bull slowly imposing his game and Med hanging with him every step of the way but ultimately outclassed. To call that a choke is to expect every young contender to prevail over an oldie and we know that's just not the case even outside this era.

by itself that game isn't a collapse. But that game definitely has choking and a big missed chance to close it out. Add in the 2 bad mistakes with easy missed shots at 5-5 in the 5th set, many stupid dropshots, below playing par at the net even by his mediocre net play standards, failing to put away FHs even by his FH standards, not having mental confidence/ability to outlast a 35.5 year old Nadal coming from a 6th month break&had shown signs of not being great physically vs Shaps etc.

whole thing adds up to an absolute major choke.

With the '20 USO F you just knew you were watching a train wreck down the final stretch. I guarantee you almost no casual/disinterested fan felt the same way about this one, cuz I was very much pulling for Med and couldn't fault him much for anything.

Nadal deserved this W, pure and simple.

nope, its just in response to the cr*p put up by big chunk of Djokovic and nadal fanbases here. That has been there from a big chunk of Djoko fanbase since 2021 itself.
and this with me putting quite a few bad ones in ignore list. Its not like I've been responding to everyone. and yet significant amount of nonsense floating around.

I've given sufficient credit to Djoko's RG 21 for example. great feat to do it at that age.

But your standards have fallen that you don't see the deficiencies in this inflation era anywhere as much as I do.
again, I had to specifically point out what happened at 2-3, 0-40 3rd set in the AO 22 final multiple times.
I mentioned nadal getting basics right in the 3rd set, but since when does one have to give significant props for getting basics right, but not doing anything that good after 2 sets of mediocre play? I gave credit to nadal's fight in this match, which was great, but there is nothing else worth mentioning from his side.

Nadal gets a pass by many for this AO final just because he's Nadal, while Gaudio/Thiem get lampooned.

Well, of course I don't expect you to see it and you'd say the same about me. I'm just telling you this NextGen meme has run its course and the youngsters are indeed stepping up. I mean Med has made 4 Slam Fs and nabbed 1 W already, with only 1 bad L among them. Maybe you expect Davy to match that in this era. I don't.

when did I say it wasn't legit? It is legit.
Just that its the weakest slam win since ToJo AO 02 and he benefitted significantly from Med choking big time.
Edit: the first sentence is ironical since I didn't even expect Med to come in on that 2nd point or to make the pass in the 3rd point. (2-3, 0-40 3rd set game). I just expected Med to get his basics right, have confidence to outlast nadal. he didn't do either and made costly mistakes on several big points.

You can't say someone's title is "legit" and then accuse his opponent of "choking." If anything this is about as close as one can get to a 5-set L without choking. By your own admission Med didn't go away and fought himself back to 5-all in the 5th. That's far more than you can say about many other RUs in a heartbreaking loss.

He won Paris in a BO5 final. Today's youngsters don't know the meaning of winning BO5 finals.

Davydenko has all the business in the world lecturing these youngsters. Hell, all past players do regardless of achievements.

So you've got 4-6 excuses. I'm no mathematician but that still leaves us with 44-46 other Slam appearances. Did anyone stop Davy from lecturing himself about his failures at those tournaments?

If you Feddies weren't so hellbent on proving the mugness of this era and making your boy look good you would've seen that Davy said nothing interesting whatsoever this time around. And this may come as a shocker but some of us actually followed the tour in the '00s, even more avidly in fact, and Davy's mental flakiness was the butt of many jokes then. Indeed it's comical to see y'all falling back on him of all people to serve as this father figure of sorts when I can't think of many who are less qualified.

Med, Alcaraz and Thiem have already achieved more than Davy ever will, and we'll see what the future holds for Sinner, Zverev, Felix and the rest. They've got better things to do than listening to empty word salad from a retired player-cum-pundit who failed to reach a single major final and who talks the media-friendly talk but didn't walk the walk himself.

I just expected Med to get his basics right, have confidence to outlast nadal. he didn't do either and made costly mistakes on several big points.

Medvedev not being as good as you expected is just him not being that good. You keep acting as if he had the higher base level at his disposal in a slam final. No, that's who he is as an exemplary flopgenner. Those errors are also who he is, both positional and selection errors; not like he was omazenk before, all that was left in the first set. I doubt Medvedev was actually better in the winning USO final, he just got a Djokovic that was even worse. Was better in the 2019 final but that's him playing above himself and his normal capabilities. These guys are just feeble and matches against them are on djokoldal racquet even two sets down. Note that pinning the loss more on game weakness than mental weakness reflects arguably worse on Medvedev as a player, I'm not praising him here.

Exactly, before. And even if this was the only 0-40 hole Bull had to deal with you can't expect fans to remember that almost a year after the fact.

Considering it was the pivotal turning moment in the match that you were arguing was not choking (when it was big time choking), yes, I would expect one to remember.

not really on the 1st one. Med shouldn't have gone back. serve was ok to little better for 1st serve, had some pace, not that well placed.
3rd one, I said execution was bad.
again, the first 4 points as a whole is clear choke, though not a collapse. 2 UFEs and 2 bad decision making.
match could've been ended then and there.

even after that, nadal wasn't anywhere near imposing his game. he just hung on with fight and mediocre level. Med gave him the keys with choking/mediocre level himself.

With the '20 USO F you just knew you were watching a train wreck down the final stretch. I guarantee you almost no casual/disinterested fan felt the same way about this one, cuz I was very much pulling for Med and couldn't fault him much for anything.

Nadal deserved this W, pure and simple.

With the USO 20 final, you had zverev and thiem playing well for 2 sets each (Z in sets 1 and 2 Thiem in sets 3 and 4). here, you had 1 well playing set combined from both (Med in the 1st set).
yes, lows not as dramatic in AO 22 final as USO 20 final 5th set, but this choke from Med was more extended/prolonged.

as far as not faulting Med much for anything ...........
Here is Mac for example talking about Medvedev choking in the AO 2022 final.

“I think Medvedev played a couple, I don't want to say careless, but maybe loose points. He got a little tentative because he could taste the finish line.

“And then all of a sudden it allowed the crowd back into the match because obviously the crowd was a big factor, I think.
“Then he started to show his edginess and started showing he was frustrated with the crowd and that made it worse for him. And that was the turning point right there.”

McEnroe added: “As soon as that slight momentum shift, then he started to get tight. And basically to me he choked in the third set at that point. To me, he should have been up 4-2 in the third set.

Not that Mac's word is gospel, but yeah a clear indicator that this was considered a choke.
not just my minority opinion or from nadal dislikers or something like that.

Well, of course I don't expect you to see it and you'd say the same about me. I'm just telling you this NextGen meme has run its course and the youngsters are indeed stepping up. 2 bad losses. AO 21 final and AO 22 final.
give Davy med's draws in the slams and he matches that in this era atleast. Also Davy closes out a mediocre nadal in AO 22 final.
but just lets say in this era in general davy matches med clearly, IMO.

How has next gen meme runs its course?
Med ended 22 at what 6 or 7?
Zverev out injured in 2nd half.
Tpas had one good run in a slam in 22. (AO). has been accumulating some points, but worse than 21.

If you're talking about 2000+ born, Alcaraz, FAA, Rune, Sinner, we'll see what happens. I'm not calling them as weak by any means. Still atleast 2-3 years to see how they go.

But that doesn't change what has happened from 2016-22 with the 2 worst generations of all time in Nishi-Rao-Dimi gen and Med-Tsit-Zverev gen (1989-99 born), does it?. Forget ATG, none of them are even at Roddick/Safin/Hewitt/Murray/Wawa/Delpo level. Thiem is in b/w those generations and is somewhere close, but not quite there considering underperformance in 1000+ finals.

You can't say someone's title is "legit" and then accuse his opponent of "choking." If anything this is about as close as one can get to a 5-set L without choking. oh it was massive choking from Med. If you think there was no choking at all, your evaluation of this match is just plain bad. One thing to debate how much of choking was involved, another to say no choking was involved.

I have no problems saying davy choked in 3rd set of RG 07 semi, 3rd set of USO 07 semi and did go away for a mental walkabout in the AO 10 QF (although he came back strong in the 4th set) - just to give some instances.

to me the way you handle davy choking and med choking indicates clear double standards. Med also choked in sets 2 and 3 vs Thiem of USO 2020 semi btw.

Its legit if you win without cheating or some external element involved (aka say Wim 73 boycott, some of the AOs of 70s/early 80s)

Davydenko would beat old Nadal at the slams, especially on HC. He's much better player than the NextGen.

Considering it was the pivotal turning moment in the match that you were arguing was not choking (when it was big time choking), yes, I would expect one to remember.

You really need to learn when to let things go. This minor detail has no bearing on this discussion. I say you were being careless and you say I should've figured it out. Fine. Let's move on.

Given the floater of his return on BP #1 Med had every reason to expect Bull to step in and unleash his FH. That's what anticipation is for and Med almost guessed correctly, except Bull opted for the sneaky dropper which caught Med off guard. That's all there's to it and why I said it was in fact the right move for Med.

These points as a whole don't amount to a choke by any meaningful definition. Octorok is harsher on Med than I am but he made pretty much the same point: the youngster was simply outclassed. You can't expect every young to beat an old most of the time, let alone a GOAT like Bull, and Med just fell painfully short this time.

With the USO 20 final, you had zverev and thiem playing well for 2 sets each (Z in sets 1 and 2 Thiem in sets 3 and 4). here, you had 1 well playing set combined from both (Med in the 1st set).

not just my minority opinion.

GPA is really not relevant when we're talking chokey-ness. One can play like the BOAT for 4 sets and yet still choke the match away. That's more or less what Zverev did, obviously with a far lower GPA of his own.

And Mac's word is certainly not gospel. You can't expect a Ponger like Med to play like he did in the 1st set for a whole match when the other guy is not doing much wrong. Bull hung in there and didn't panic, hence his deserved W.

2 bad losses. AO 21 final and AO 22 final.

Well, obviously I don't count this one. And game-wise Davy and Med may be more or less equal but there's no way I'm picking a former underachiever who was well known for his own mental issues to match an actual Slam champ with 3 extra Fs under his belt. And I certainly don't expect him to do better than Med vs. this Bull in a major F.

And I'm including the younger gen. I'd be very surprised if Alcaraz failed to at least rival Wilander-Becker-Edberg and expect Yanni (yes I know the namesake is Greek), Rune and Felix to grab their own share of Slams. And believe it or not I think Kyrgios might join the party, too (expect a dissertation on him within the next few weeks). We'll see.

oh it was massive choking from Med. If you think there was no choking at all, your evaluation of this match is just plain bad. One thing to debate how much of choking was involved, another to say no choking was involved.

Its legit if you win without cheating or some external element involved (aka say Wim 73 boycott, some of the AOs of 70s/early 80s)

Again getting outclassed/outsmarted on big points isn't choking. At the end of the day Med simply wasn't good enough. That's a credit to Nadal, not a discredit to the young Russian.

We'll see.

Again getting outclassed/outsmarted on big points isn't choking. At the end of the day Med simply wasn't good enough. That's a credit to Nadal, not a discredit to the young Russian.

Nadal gives Medvedev's game problems on HC, Med is lucky he did as well as he did, and he was GOATING in those first 2 sets. Ambk needs to understand Nadal made adjustments and started bringing all his tools out of the box.

Given the floater of his return on BP #1 Med had every reason to expect Bull to step in and unleash his FH. That's what anticipation is for and Med almost guessed correctly, except Bull opted for the sneaky dropper which caught Med off guard. That's all there's to it and why I said it was in fact the right move for Med.

actually no, nadal hit the FH back to Med BH after med's return. med hit a BH that fell pretty short.

sequence again:
nadal hits 1st serve
med floats return back, but deep enough. med goes back immediately after hitting return. nadal is pushed back to some extent by return.
nadal hits fh somewhat deep to med bh.
med hits a meh bh that is clearly short. goes even further back
nadal hits the dropper

These points as a whole don't amount to a choke by any meaningful definition. Octorok is harsher on Med than I am but he made pretty much the same point: the youngster was simply outclassed. You can't expect every young to beat an old most of the time, let alone a GOAT like Bull, and Med just fell painfully short this time.

Again getting outclassed/outsmarted on big points isn't choking. At the end of the day Med simply wasn't good enough. That's a credit to Nadal, not a discredit to the young Russian.

yes, that game was a choke as was 5-5, 40-40 2 bad misses.
I expect Med to beat a mediocre Nadal after being up 2 sets to love.
I expect him to put away FHs by his level (not others), not hit so many bad dropshots, play so below par at the net (even by his medicore standards), expect him to be confident enough to outlast a 35.5 year old after being up 2 sets to love, expect him not to choke on important points as much as did vs this level Nadal.

Acapulco 22 is where Med was actually outclassed by nadal.
Or USO 19 final to give another example. and keep in mind, Med played better by some distance in that match vs a clearly better nadal.

GPA is really not relevant when we're talking chokey-ness. One can play like the BOAT for 4 sets and yet still choke the match away. That's more or less what Zverev did, obviously with a far lower GPA of his own.

I'm saying the choke was prolonged in the case of AO 22 final from 3rd set to the 5th set, though it didn't go the depths of the USO 2020 final 5th set (but USO 2020 choke was clearly shorter in duration)

And Mac's word is certainly not gospel. You can't expect a Ponger like Med to play like he did in the 1st set for a whole match when the other guy is not doing much wrong. Bull hung in there and didn't panic, hence his deserved W.

I'm saying others have noted that Med choked. Others who don't dislike nadal.
I dont't expect med to play like in the 1st set for the whole match. he already had a dip in the 2nd set anyways, which was meh level from both (med just clutching it out) but he could've closed it out in the 3rd set. and in no set did nadal play at a good level. 1st set was bad and next 4 were around meh level. so its not like nadal was so much imposing on Med.
Zed and Thiem each played well for 2 sets each in the USO 2020 final (which is 1 more each than what Med did in AO 22 final)

Davy would absolutely would beat this mediocre Nadal. Davy matches up far better vs nadal than med does.
guy is 6-1 vs nadal on HC for a reason. yes, all Bo3, but then med is down 1-3 in Bo3 HC vs a worse nadal.

Anderson and Ruud have 2 slam finals each in this inflation era. Thinking Davy would have 2-3 slam finals in this inflation era isn't a generous projection.
(not just Davy, also Nalby/Berdych/Tsonga/Ferrer. Sod already has 2 anyways).

Edit: med also has his own mental issues which aren't small. (which would be showcased even more in an actual decent era)
Just FTR, davy is 21-7 in finals total. including 4-1 in finals of 1000+ (3 won vs nadal+delpo, 1 vs hrbaty and 1 lost to Djoko)

And I'm including the younger gen. I'd be very surprised if Alcaraz failed to at least rival Wilander-Becker-Edberg and expect Yanni (yes I know the namesake is Greek), Rune and Felix to grab their own share of Slams. We'll see.

But I'm not. My criticism is of the 89-99 born and what has happened from 2016-2022.
The NextGen meme was/is for the 89-99 born generations. Not for the Alcaraz-FAA-Rune-Sinner gen.

So my point holds.

How has next gen meme runs its course?
Med ended 22 at what 6 or 7?
Zverev out injured in 2nd half.
Tpas had one good run in a slam in 22. (AO). has been accumulating some points, but worse than 21.

You expected Nadal to get ROFLSTOMPED :( It's in my sig for all to see...

No wonder you're so salty about it...

Why haven't you cried about Roddick's choke in WIM09 final? I expect him to win the TB from 6-2 up and not send a very makeable bh volley flying past and out of the tram lines...

These things happen with lesser players... however, you won't be told that Med didn't choke to that extent at any stage...

And it's hilarious that we have a Fed fan calling out a player for choking... blocked out 40-15 have we? That's an epic choke... so you can hardly blame Med for not capitalising on a 0-40 opportunity.. especially when Fed himself had that chance in the AO09 final and Djok had it too at US13...

Wow he said that? Lol
To be fair most people thought Med was the favorite, and he was. But abmk's constant underrating of Nadal is what's getting him.

Nadal served for 2nd set, but did not have MP in YEC 2020 semi. In any case, Nadal was lucky Med screwed up after being up 4-2 in the 2nd set.
Med was up 5-1 in 3rd set in their YEC 2019 match and nadal needed a humungous choke from him.
Med was up BPs at start of 5th set in USO 2019 final

with nadal being considerably worse now than in any of their previous matches and Med having actually got the win in YEC 2020, Med gonna ROFLSTOMP Nadal man. Sorry, but that's gonna happen. Nadal's gonna be ROFLSTOMPed. :(

Medvedev's level in the AO 2022 final went down more than a notch once he got tight and broken in 3rd set. His inexplicable drop shot strategy single-handedly cost him lord knows how many points. He started servimg sporadically, with little confidence to back up worse serving off the baseline, he was returning worse, especially in the 5th, Nadal even started serving aces there. Lol 3rd set was not as egrigious, anyone can get tight in a Slam final. But whether it was the pressure, the crowd, or Medvedev running out of gas, he did not recuperate and was a goner mentally for big stretches of the 4th and 5th.

I can't with people trying to gaslight others that they are crazy for seeing an obvious choke as such.

However you slice it Med had good reason to anticipate Bull stepping in with his FH, hence his own step back. That's what you were criticizing him for, and I'm saying it was in fact the right move for him. Stay on the baseline and he's likely dealing with that FH with less time/space to react. The point was lost almost from the start.

yes, that game was a choke as was 5-5, 40-40 2 bad misses.

This is just a rehash of the same. To me you and your high-5ers are using a very loose definition of "choking" to make this 21st for Bull go down better. I'll just leave it at that.

I'm saying the choke was prolonged in the case of AO 22 final from 3rd set to the 5th set, though it didn't go the depths of the USO 2020 final 5th set (but USO 2020 choke was clearly shorter in duration)

Nobody except in the most extreme cases "chokes" for such a long duration of any match. I mean your BFF just made a hyperbolic but fair point that A-Rod choked away the 2nd-set TB of the '09 Wimby F, but I don't call that L a choke either cuz I find it absurd to dismiss an otherwise hard-fought 5-setter like that. Obviously this match wasn't as good, but the logic is the same.

The '20 USO F is different in that Alex clearly struggled with his serve down the stretch and ending up with just 41% of his 2nd-serve PW and 15 DFs. And yes, if he'd lost the 2nd set of this year's FO SF vs. Bull sans that injury and ultimately the match I would've agreed he choked away that one, too.

On paper prime Davy should beat this Oldal on hard, yes. But they never played each other at any major and yes, I do expect Bull to win just about every Slam meeting vs. Davy, including this one which likely would've seen the Muscovite up 2 sets like his younger countryman and dared him to deliver. I wouldn't bet on him even then.

But I'm not. My criticism is of the 89-99 born and what has happened from 2016-2022.

We're at the end of 2022. It makes no sense to exclude the younger gen when they're the future of this game and Davy explicitly singled out one of 'em as not fully living up to his billing.

Stef isn't going anywhere unless he ditches his crazy dad as coach. Alex's remaining career depends on how strongly he recovers from his injury. And Med already belongs in the record books so I'm sure he's not sweating this dis from his compatriot.

this is their mindset no wonder they dont win anything.. and kyrgios is the most arrogant one lol

Asked by reporters at the exhibition Diriyah Tennis Cup event in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh on Thursday about whether there might be a new men's grand slam singles champ in 2023, Kyrgios responded: "I'm gonna say 'no'.

"Well, Rafa will win the French Open, Djokovic will probably win Wimbledon - unless I stop him - so I don't know ... Djokovic is so dominant that unless someone really elevates their level at the Australian Open or US Open, I can't see him losing.

"(Daniil) Medvedev could maybe beat him. Look I'd love to win one - but, realistically, he's so dominant."

I'm not here to defend current era greatness... but I'm also not gonna defend a guy who hardly did anything at the majors either... fact is Davydenko was losing to far lesser players than oldal and oldovic on a consistent basis...

Davydenko wouldn't lose to a 33 year old Nadal at the US Open or a 35 year old Nadal at the AO.

Regardless, he isn't criticizing an individual player, but a generation. Even if Davydenko "hardly did anything at the majors", others players of his generation did...winning 21 slams from 2000 - 2009. The same can't be said for the generations of Nishikori/Dimitrov/Raonic and Thiem/Medvedev/Zverev. They all "hardly did anything at the majors"...winning not a single one during the 2010s. Non-ATGs Murray/Wawrinka/Cilic won 7 slams, so it's clear that weakness is the reason the youngsters won zippo.

Are you sure about that bud?

Have a look at the list of players he lost to:

Dodig
Fish
Djok
Gasquet
Sod
Muller
Fed
Fed
Srichipan
Beck
Dent
Blake
Meligeni

2019 Nadal was far better than those apart from 06, 07 Fed and 11 Djok obviously...

As for the AO I agree... because Davydenko most likely wouldn't even reach him... but if he somehow did... lol if you think Med's mental collapse was bad.. Davydenko's AO10 collapse books him straight into the looney bin.

Quit spouting things without even knowing the facts. All you do is look at age then determine who should win based only on that... the fact is Davydenko was a massive head case as well especially at the majors... and the fact he lost before the 4th round in 36/50 slam appearances should straight up tell him to keep his mouth shut.

"unless I stop him" LOL, I don't even think Nick can beat Berretini at Wimbledon, let alone Novak.

6-1 vs peak Nadal on hard.

Yes, I'm sure bud.

Old Nadal has been losing to this gen on hc as well though... in fact, so has old Djok...

Davy is clearly referring to majors only...

Even the bold part I questioned you on referred specifically to the hc majors...

36/50 majors he went out before the 4th round...

Davydenko was garbage at the majors minus a handful where he still couldn't make a final...

So basically, you've got nothing as usual. You can't even understand the topic at hand, just more gibberish from a salty Fed fan...

22 > 20 bud, sleep well citizen...

I'm not slicing anything, I just pointed out what happend correctly.
Med was a little behind the baseline and could've/should've stayed there.

This is just a rehash of the same. To me you and your high-5ers are using a very loose definition of "choking" to make this 21st for Bull go down better. I'll just leave it at that.

except I pointed out instances for davy as well. and I've used my own definition for since like so many years. has nothing to do with 22 AO Nadal.
you have a limited range for definition of choking. not my issue. mine is moderate, IMO. not too restrictive, nor too expansive.

From 2018, about Lendl ->

he didn't choke against Mac.
His major chokes were AO 83 vs Wilander and USO 83 vs Connors.
Borg was just better in RG 81 and outlasted him.
Connors was just better in USO 82. (could be argued as a choke at a stretch, but I don't think so)

Again from 2018, about Wim 2008 final:

based on what ?
Federer choked in the 2nd set ...being broken twice after being up 4-1 with some below par play including lousy approach shots ?

both were choking to an extent in the 3rd set.

Nadal choked in the 4th set TB.

I'd say a 5th set was fair.

From 2019, about Fed.

worst loss in non-slam events in terms of impact since maybe WTF 2012 final where he choked at the tail end of both sets.

Obviously this match wasn't as good, but the logic is the same.

yes, it was choking for a long time from set 3 onwards. it was an extreme case here. which was my point to begin with. I explained how multiple times as well.

Roddick did choke on that SP. but it was for a point, I'd say.
There is no comparision anyways, not just quality wise, but fight wise also.
After losing that 2nd set TB, Roddick held all the way in the 3rd set (lost in the TB). won the 4th set with a break and held all the way till 14-14 all in the 5th set.
not to forget Roddick was up vs prime Federer fresh from equalling 14 slams and dominant at that Wimbledon before that final. So mentally, a much tougher task to go up against him than Oldal coming off a 6 month break.

I don't think Med fought well in the AO 22 final from set 3 onwards. Nadal did.

The '20 USO F is different in that Alex clearly struggled with his serve down the stretch and ending up with just 41% of his 2nd-serve PW and 15 DFs. And yes, if he'd lost the 2nd set of this year's FO SF vs. Bull sans that injury and ultimately the match I would've agreed he choked away that one, too.

that's your definition - which isn't the same as mine.
Zverev did choke in that RG match, especially 2nd set and 1 missed volley on SP in TB.
That 2nd set was the worst set I've seen Nadal play at RG, in probably like ever. (Maybe the Andujar set in 2011 3rd round where Andujar was up 5-0 and choked hilariously). Yet, it was close to ending up in a TB.

Choking in a match is not necessarily the same as choking away a match. Just to be clear.

I wouldn't bet on him even then.

disagree strongly. Saying davy who is a tough matchup for nadal can't even beat this clearly mediocre version of Nadal? come on
the mental stuff depends on the matchup as well. fed's a tough matchup for davy. nadal is not.
This is why I said you are treating Med with kid gloves and being harsh on Davy. double standards.
I did expect Med to win vs Nadal in AO 22 given respective forms. even more so after nadal went down 2 sets to love.
Medvedev was also the favorite as per betting odds.

About Alcaraz. From the article

A former ATP Finals champion himself, Davydenko still backed Alcaraz to perform when he was fit but questioned his decision to pull out of the season-ending championships. He added: “And he wasn't tired. Physically, he is incredibly strong, can run - well, young. Breathing, moving is not a problem. But injuries are something incomprehensible, it can stop him, damage his rating. If he starts in good shape, then he can hold on, show great results. But I'm really surprised that at that age he withdrew from the halls, from all tournaments. This is not for the No 1 of the world.”

yeah, I disagree with Davy on the injury thing. But he wasn't calling Alcaraz weak.

Davy is talking about what has happened till now and his focus is on the Zverev-Tpas-Med gen anyways.

Agree on Stefanos.
We'll see what Z can do. Even if he recovers from injury, still not sold on Bo5 mentality. Plus I only got to know about his diabetes issue this year.
Just because Med has a slam doesn't mean I should rate him above the 2nd tier bunch from 80-88 born (the 6 of them I mentioned) as far as level goes.
These are supposed to be top tier players of their generation. How can you be satisified with just Med's career as of now as the best of his generation?

There are players that have lost to Nadal at BO3 but beat him at BO5(e.g. Soderling in 2009)

It's all about match up and Davy's game gave prime Nadal fit. He loses to other players but he sure enough has the ability to beat Nadal regardless of his ranking/form.

Had they never played against one another, if you say Davy would lead 6-1 H2H people like you would say that's totally absurd. The reality is he proved it against prime Nadal. To say he can't beat Nadal at BO5 is pure assumption from where you stand.

You're so biased toward Nadal is beyond belief.

Lastly, you can scream 22 20 all you want, but everyone acknowledges that Federer is a superior player than Nadal everywhere except clay, more time spending at the top #1 and more peak dominance/performance at their respective peak years
