Nikolay Davydenko - French Open thread

I just thought that he deserves his own thread for the French Open. I'm not a Davytard (new breed:??) or anything, but I appreciate his game and think that if any should be filling Nadal's big shoes in the top half of the draw, it should be Kolya!

He's #11 in the world at the moment, but he's in the last 8 of the French Open up against Robin Soderling today.

Can he win? What are his chances?

Here's some facts to take into consideration.

Best Results:arrow: French Open: Semi-Finals in 2005, 2007 + Quarter-finals in 2006
2008 French Open - Round 3.

Record against Robin Soderling: 2-3 (0-2 on clay).
Record against Fernando Gonzalez: 4-0 (2-0 on clay).
Record against Andy Murray: 4-4 (0-1 on clay).[/CENTER]

So he's got a decent chance against Murray, a good chance against Gonzalez, and a bit of a struggle against Soderling.

This season Davydenko missed out, basically, the entire HC season and most of the clay season. He did, however, make the Quarterfinals in Monte Carlo and the Semifinals in Barcelona and Estoril, so he was playing decent clay tennis (slightly below his own standard, though).

His straight-set 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 drubbing of Verdasco in the last round, however, is a very positive sign for Nikolay and, hopefully, he can take that confidence into his match against Soderling and get that win.

Probably one of the most underated and unappreciated players. So solid off both wings and fast as lightning. Let's hope he'll do well the rest of the tournament.

Definitely very strong technique-wise. Hitting very deep balls and finding all areas of the court.

Here's an article taking a look at the dynamics behind the match between Davy and Soderling, titled "The Clubber vs. The Puncher"

great thread blink! I am expecting davy to win in straights. He was incredible against verdasco
Thanks VivalaVida! And yeah, he was really great and he kept his focus in that third set when Verdasco tried to get back into the match.

I didn't see his match with Wawrinka, actually, so if anyone saw it maybe we could get a short summary? Was it like the Verdasco match?

I just find it weird there's a Davydenko appreciation thread, yet all people complain about is that WTA players are one dimensional, unlike men's players. Davydenko's probably one of the most one dimensional baseliners out there, yet no one complains of his lack of variety. Same with Simon. I like Davydenko. Just think it's hypocritical.

This is a great thread, Blinkism. Davydenko's always the forgotten man. I love his game.

Good luck to him the rest of the tournament!
