Nintendo DS LITE or Sony PSP?

Gundam

Semi-Pro
Happy monday everyone!

Since my son has behaved very well during this summer, I might grant his biggest wish. I am not a video game fan (What can beat tennis?) so not very excited about it but he really wants it. Since I don't know much about them and price is kinda similar I wanted to hear your opinion. He currently has a Gameboy advanced and a playstation but we agreed to limit his gamepack purchase so he has only a few gamepacks. I am considering,

1. Nintendo DS lite (is it the newest model?)
2. Sony Powerstation portable (PSP)

Can anyone compare them in terms of,

Power
Flexibility
Balance
Paintjob
Control etc...

Have a nice week!

I own a DS lite but have played with both consoles. By power do you mean battery life? I am not sure about the battery life on the PSP but for the DS lite it lasts for 4-6 hours. I imagine the battery life would be longer on the PSP since it only has one screen, opposed to the 2 screens on the DS lite.

The DS lite is balanced quite well and even has the ability to play Gameboy advanced games so your son can play new DS games and his old games. A lot of it depends on the type of games your son likes to play, as Nintendo and Sony have different genres, like Mario compared to Metal Gear Solid. One thing I want to point out is that there is a product called the R4 which you can buy very inexpensively which allows you to download games onto it, so you don't have to buy games. If you want a link just ask me.

Personally, I like the look and paint job on the DS better. I like the flip feel to it and it has a very clean look to it when closed, as well as open.
The controls on the DS are great, with 2 screens, one being a touch screen, so you can use a "stylus" to interact much more, opposed to just button mashing.

Good luck!

Anyways, the m3ds simply is the same thing as the r4 (except more expensive and a little behind on firmware). In addition to having multiple games on the cartridge (BUY the games you put on there), you can put movies on it too, using moonshell to play them. 1/2hr of video turns to about....<50 megs, so a 1gb microSD card can hold quite a bit. Moonshell can also play music

I personally do not own a PSP, but do own a DS. If you plan to use the internet through the consoles, the DS does not have an internet browser available to the US (unless you import it), nor, as far as I know, does the DS support wireless G or WPA encryption. The DS can really do all that the PSP does, but it takes extra hardware, but since it's quite a bit cheaper, it's not a big deal. (The m3dss was like...50 and the 1gb microsd was about 10)

Power - PSP, has better technology under the hood.

Flexibility - PSP, built in music/video playing abilities. (DS can do this with an R4 or M3 simply)

Balance - DS = head light with the top case lighter than the bottom, PSP = even balanced.

Paintjob - DS looks sleeker IMO.

Control - DS, the touch screen is not a gimmick, it works real well.

As for non-tennis criteria:

Games: DS has better games, much more fun. And with an R4, it is easy to get like 10 games on a single microSD card.

Battery: DS has better battery life, but PSP is pretty good too.

Screen: PSP hands down has the better screen quality.

So overall I would say the DS lite is the best tennis racqu...err I mean better game system. Lots of great games, small, easy to use. I'm sure son will like its games, and that is what is most important. Some good games for him to buy are Mario (Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros), Castlevania, Megaman, Pokemon.

Many many thanks, Hot sauce, snoflewis, gwrtheyrn, koopa_troopa!
I knew I'd get useful inputs from you all.
As a startrek fan, I think our TW board is like a BORG community-there are always someone who can offer helpful information.

FYI, my son like to play Starwars, Gundam (giant robot battles), Ninja stuff. I doubt he has a Mario bros game. I will discuss with my son, thanks a lot!

* Can we use these epuipments for playing MP3 (DS with that R4 thingy for example? My son wants a MP3 player too. Nowadays everything does everything (ex; iphone)

I like the DS every much. My sister has one and I'm really tempted to buy one. I got her an R4 from Thailand(visited family) and its simply amazing. She has about 15 games on there and We save so much money. Any game I/she wants i download the rom. Click and drag to the R4 file and "Bam, It's On" I have both transformers game and lots of other games for the price of 2. Pretty freaking sweet

Actually it does......http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-DS-Lite-Browser/dp/B000OAO494

Your child will enjoy the DS more. It's not even a competition; in the long run the DS blows the PSP out of the water. (and the games are cheaper(assuming you aren't a pirate;) ))

Hmm...I wasn't aware that it was available in the US; I knew it was out in Japan and Europe, but everyone in the US was importing them...Though, it doesn't matter too much to me, since the DS doesn't work with my router...Thanks for the heads up, though..

As for an MP3 Player, I'd probably advise against using a ds for an mp3 player, since the cost of an r4/m3dss+the memory is about the same as a standalone mp3 player, if you know where to look (google dealmein...However, with the R4/M3DSS, you can buy extra gigs at ~$10/gb on sale, but I think it's better to have a separate device, as to conserve batteries...also, who uses that much space? I still have 500mb left on my 2gb ipod nano, and I've only listened to like...1/10 of them)

But yes, the r4/m3dss can play mp3s through moonshell. Also a note on the m3dss/r4, since they're both slot-1 cards, you can't play GBA games off of them. Oh, and you can't do download play (You can't host the DL play, nor can you connect when the card is in, since it skips the DS interface into it's own GUI)

And I repeat again: Piracy is bad. You should only put games you own on the m3dss/r4 (I use it for convenience, so I don't carry a lot of cards around)

I'm not sure I get what you mean by this. If you want to play a GBA game, just take out the r4 and put in the GBA game in slot-2.

As for the DL play part, I own an r4 and have hosted download play for Jump Stars, Bomberman, Mario Kart, and other games. It works fine. And if you want to connect to DL play, just take out the r4.

im not really into portable gaming systems...but i'd definitely get the DS if i HAD to. nintendo has really stepped up after the failure of the gamecube....and is just dominating the gaming scene right now.

also, PSP just never had a good marketing strategy to begin with. does it have potential? yes...probably more so than the ds...but just like the ps3..they dont know what to do with it. the psp was at first supposed to be an ipod killer...but that obviously didnt turn out right because they came out with the device...but didnt know what the hell to do with it. hence, PSP. sony released an updated version of the psp....yet it's only smaller and lighter. where is the tv tuner? where are the better games? sony's lack of creativity and ingenuity has caused it to fall....

DS has more anime/kid oriented games.

PSP has more of the PS2-genre hardcore games.

Piracy isn't really that bad. South-East Asia isn't included in the manufacturer's target market anyway si it doesn't affect sales. Their only major targets are Japan , US and Europe. Imagine , minimum wage here is only $5-6 a day and one games costs a whopping $50!
