Man, whoever booked on a Nishikori-Cilic final is a rich man.

We're gonna have a first time Champion! The h2h is 5-2 for Nishikori including 2 wins in 2014 and the last 3 matches between them (in 2013 and 2014).

They played twice at the US Open (2010 and 2012) with both matches being very close and being split at 1 win all.

Nishikori is probably the slight favorite but this is anyone's match.

This is a great match up for Nishikori, assuming he is physically ok this will be a straight set demolition job.

I need a while to make a prediction on this one given what I've just seen.

Customarily, I would have defaulted to Nishikori, but Cilic's performance has left a big impression on me...

That said, this is going 4 and I think Cilic takes it. He has a better serve.

If both replicate their form from today I think Cilic got this in 4 sets.

But then comes the match-up...

Man, can't wait to see how both players react in the final. It's a first for both! So exciting!

BTW I will not be watching the final. Both of them will be choking badly. It will be low quality disappointment.

Anyway, Nishikori in 4 is my prediction but really anything can happen (Cilic in 3, Nishi in 5, anything :mrgreen: )

Nishikori deserves it a little more - He did not have any preparation due to injury , had tough draw and had to beat the favorite for the tournament.

Beating Simon, Berdych, Old Fed is not the same as Raonic, Stan, Novak.

I give Nishikori the edge. He has the court coverage to withstand the power of Cilic, and will be able to counterpunch.

But either way nice to see a new slam champ.

Cilic will win in 4. His pile-driving serve will blow past Nishisushi left right and center. There is really nothing Nishi can do about it.

That said, there is obviously SOMETHING about the little nipper's game that throws off the big boys stroke production. Djoker just couldn't find the rythm today. He looked like a middle aged white politician trying to dance at a hiphop thugfest concert.

This is a very hard match to predict, simply because we don't really know how either player is going to deal with the occasion of being in a US Open final without having to play any of the big 4 in the final. Will either of them be nervous? Will either of them seize the moment and play brilliantly? Who knows?

unfortunately we're still stuck with NBC for the French..eventually that will be over too

I can honestly say I have no idea who will win this match, too close to call. If Cilic plays like he did in his SF then he'll win but I doubt he'll be able to replicate that level of play again. Gonna go with Nishi in 5 sets, let's just hope we see some great tennis from both guys. I'm actually really looking forward to it! :smile:

Cilic seemed more Slam champion material today, he totally killed Fed.
Won't be a 3rd setter. If a 5 setter, Nishikori. If a 4 setter, Cilic.

The head-to-head is 5-2 to Nishikori, and 1-1 at the US Open.

Still, let us remember this year's Australian Open final. Nadal led 12-0 in his head-to-head against Wawrinka, without having lost a set in those 12 matches.

History only indicates the matchup favoring Nishikori. He was regularly beating Cilic even when he was much lower ranked and less experienced (back when Cilic was first in the top 10 IIRC). So if you favor Nishikori by level of play alone, that really is bad news for Cilic.

I hope Cilic wins though, so I went with my heart and picked him in 4. Nishikori will probably win several slams, while Cilic could go on to win another if he wins this, but probably will never win one if he doesn't.

It would be BETTER for Tennis if Kei Nishikori wins. he would be first Asian dude to win the US open EVER. and that is HUGE for ALL Asians even though most non-Japanese Asians don't like Japanese.

and if Cilic won, NO big deal, just another European that we don't know, no big impact on tennis there. ONLY place that win would be huge is in his country in Europe.
