Well said.
Cilic played like a demon possessed, there was nothing Nishikori could do - in fact, exactly like Berdych and Fed got drubbed as well.
I really wonder where Cilic will go from here and how long he'll be able to sustain this kind of level.

That's why I was rather surprised to see so many people think Nishikori would win this match. Because he beat Djokovic? Well it may sound harsh, but as good as Djokovic is, he's surely not shown himself as unbeatable during the US HC swing, rather the contrary.
So I think the signs of what to come were clearly all over the wall. I guess a lot of folks just didn't want to see it.

yeah, that's exactly what I had said before ...

That was a flawless performance from cilic vs federer. If he can keep up that level vs nishikori, the title is his.

But Nishi at the moment is a far better returner than federer and will get back more serves into play.

Nishikori in 3 sets. He is the much better player, having also beaten a bunch of much better players than Cilic has on the way to the final. I saw them play at the USO a few years ago and Nishikori needed 5 sets to take out Cilic back then, but I don’t think he needs as many sets now.

cilic will win because when it comes to drug vs talent I seen drug win most of the times.

He was in the game ?

Cilic played well but Nisikori looks a player who is half a step slower than his usual self in this final made Cilic game look like better than it is.
.

I agree.
Nisikori was like he could not move.
He was exhausted from the last 3 matches ?

21 pages for a Grand Slam final...

This must be an all-time low. Not surprising given the finalists though.

Yeah, was just going to comment on this too. I can't believe that there is only just over 1000 posts in this thread JUST because none of Djokovic, Nadal or Federer were involved. Among casual tennis fans I would expect that interest would die down sharply without one of these players but I'm disappointed that even here, on a tennis fanatic's forum, the big names trump the game.

The match was quite short as well.

That's true. Good point.

Final was on a Monday last year, too. Also, the star power always runs the game, not the other way around. And it's not just tennis. It was true when the Kings played the Devils in the SC Finals in 2012 for example. I'm pretty sure ratings were very low for that series. Same principle here.

Yeah, I may have been a bit too high on my soap box with that comment. I guess it's normal. For me, though, I'll watch any final, no matter who's contesting it. I just love this game.

As for the Kings-Devils, well that's just BORING hockey. That's all I have to say about that. That's pretty much the exact equivalent of watching Ferrer and Simon play a Slam final.

Well, that's my point. Kings-Devils was boring hockey. Just as Cilic's game is pretty mechanical and boring to me. I like watching Nishikori and wanted him to win, but it ends there. To me, Cilic's strokes lack originality and flair. Plus, I was working when this final came on last year.

I watch the SC final every year and I watch any GS final regardless, like you, but I can still see why some people were not overly excited by the prospect of Nishikori-Cilic. Plus, like I said, I'm pretty sure I was working, like most others on a Monday.

Kind off topic now, but what did you think of Tampa Bay-Chicago this year? I'll tell you what I'm getting bored of: the Blackhawks!

I wanted TB to win, but I like Chicago as well so I wasn't too disappointed that they won. I like Toews (and Kane too, just as a hockey player, I don't condone what he might have done recently in the offseason) and Keith and Seabrook. Of course, I wanted a new winner and I like Stamkos hence my cheering for TB. That said, I know a lot of people like you that are tired of the Blackhawks, but I'm not really one of those people. The way I see it, not many Canadians were complaining when the Oilers won all those Cups in the 80's for example. And you're a Canucks fan too aren't you? ;) I even know Habs fans that say they're tired of the Blackhawks which I always find utterly hilarious. In fact, my dad is one of the "tired of the Blackhawks" group, which I also find funny because he goes for the Patriots in the NFL.

As far as the actual series went, I liked it. It went 6 games so it was pretty long. Obviously you want game 7, but that's just not realistic every year. It was highly anticipated by me and plenty of others. I think that led to some people calling it a "dud" or something similar when they realized every game wasn't going to be 5-4 or 6-5, but that's the SC finals for you. TB still showed why they belonged there and were able to show their speed. I wasn't buying any of the "letdown" stuff. Every game was tight which surprised me a little tbh. I figured TB would lose in 4 or 5 (especially after they lost game 1 at home in heartbreaking fashion) so 6 games was a bonus.

Thanks for the thoughts. It was actually the first SC Final since 2003 that I didn't watch. After that Canucks-Flames series I just needed a break from hockey. I was happy to see Tampa Bay get there though. They play the the kind of up-tempo game that I like. They're going to be a great team for a long time with Yzerman at the helm. Great drafting, great development and great coaching. That organization is oozing talent.

And yeah, as a Canucks fan, the Oilers and Blackhawks aren't my favourite teams in the world. I do respect the Blackhawks though.

The Oilers?
