Nishikori is the best of the next generation

President

Legend
Nishikori IMO has the best and most complete game right now amongst all the youngsters. He lacks any obvious weaknesses in his game, being really solid off both the forehand and the backhand (one of the best backhands on tour actually) and he has excellent footwork and movement. He has the potential to be a much better Ferrer IMO, he just lacks the Spaniard's freakish stamina. Look for him to beat Ferrer tomorrow and reach top 10 this year! Discuss

Absolutely and wholeheartedly agree. Although I think Ferrer will win tomorrow, Nishikori is superior to Raonic, Janowicz, Dimitrov, TheDog, etc.

No doubt Kei N is on the upswing and will move up in the rankings, Ferrer however is too seasoned for him and will be in 4th place overall ATP world rankings if not already there. Look for Ferrer to win in 3 or 4 sets max.

Why do you say that? Nishikori leads their H2H 2-1 and beat him at the US Open when he was only 18 and Ferrer was world #4. He also just recently fed him a bagel in their latest match at the Olympics, Ferrer is actually a good matchup for Kei's game.

lacks the stamina ?
he has a 5-1 record in 5 sets matches !

but yes/hai, i'd be pleased to see nishikori go very far in this tournament. :)

I disagree, Nishikori will probably lose in 3-4 sets.
You see the thing is, Ferrer's super god stamina will probably allow him to grind his way through points and get to balls which other players would have to give up (or they'd certainly burned out in 1.5-2 sets like Monfils always does).

Nishikori doesn't really have the ability like Federer or Nadal to hit through Ferrer, he just has good ball placement and good head and can create openings. But Ferrer simply has too much stamina.

Love Nishikori's game. Really enjoyed watching him win the Japan Open. He kicked Berdych and Raonic's behinds to win that one. If he can consistently display that form, I don't see why he can't make it to the top 10.

Also, another reason I want him to succeed is so that tennis fans can stop saying that being 5 ft 9-5ft 11 is tantamount to being physically handicapped in pro tennis.

Well, he obviously can't serve like Raonic so that would be his weakness. But we can't blame him for that bc he is not tall..

His movement and groundstrokes are already Top 10 IMO.

So we will see from him doing something like what Ferrer has been doing.

Nishikori flys under the radar when people ask who is the most promising player but he is ranked higher and has beaten ferrer and tsonga in gs matches. We need more nishikori on this board. Lets face it he is more humble then dimi or tomic. It would be good for tennis to have a strong asian player challenging for slams think how many new fans and the sponsership it could attract to the sport.

To me he's a smaller version of Andreas Seppi. VERY consistent.
Right now he's playing better than the Dog but I don't know if there's room in the top 10 for him. Lots of talent up there.

Can he beat Raonic?

Surely Nishikori can be better than the likes of Almugro, Tipsarevic, and Monaco...

I'm inclined to agree, but I'm afraid he is too injury prone to have a really great career. I hope I'm wrong though.

he was my pick for sleeper of the tournament. we'll see what jap boy can do.

I think Nishikori is tied with Tomic in this aspect. They both seem to know how to win matches. With Nishikori I always get the feeling that he lacks power. The feeling of steadiness, that I get with especially Murray, I haven't got at all with Nishikori. He doesn't seem like a wall, he seems like someone that can be brought down pretty easily with some powerful Nadal-like forehands.
The problem I have with Tomic is his messed up forehand. I don't know, just doesn't seem like it's a better alternative to the regular forehand, but maybe he's invented something revolutionary, who knows? You should also keep in mind that Nishikori is young 23, but Tomic is very young, 20. Tomic still has a lot of time to improve, while Nishikori has got to make his move if he wants to show that he's one of the best.

Nishikori is my favorite youngster so that's why I'm being so critical. I want him to win a slam.

Nishikori is the only one out of the young guns that reminds me of Djokovic and Murray. He's shown signs of greatness for a long time now, beginning when he bagelled Djokovic 2.0 in 2011 (the only bagel he got that year). I just really hope that he stops getting injured so much, because if not he'll be in the top 10 soon for sure.

I really don't think we can read anything into that. Djokovic tanked.

Nishikori hasn't got as much talent as Raonic. Why? Serve. That lazy Canadian can coast on almost all other aspects of his game because he has that serve. In order for Nishikori (or most anyone else) to beat Raonic, he simply has to hope Raonic is having a bad serving day, like in 2012 Tokyo Open. Otherwise there isn't much he can do.

I'd say winning his first title and reaching the fourth round at the USO, defeating #4 Ferrer on the way was the beginning. Back in 2008, when he was only 18!

Even without a big serve, Nishikori has a winning h2h against Ferrer, Tsonga, Berdych and Raonic amongst others. Wake me up when Raonic defeats Tsonga and Ferrer at a major.

Kei is very underrated imo. i hope he stays healthy and manages his career with that in mind.

he has developed as a complete player with no obvious weaknesses and is mentally strong.

I really like him and would love to see him pull an upset on Ferrer in their match.

Not many youngsters or players in general can say they have a winning record against Ferrer, Berdych and Tsgona.

If he can remain healthy for the entire year and that is a big IF then he can definitely break into the top 10.

Don't forget that he lost a full year to injuries, otherwise he would probably be top 10 already.

Yeah, that was a major blow in his career so far.

I think the injury is still nagging. Otherwise, he could have been top 10 by now.
Fabulous talent. I still remember he beat decent players win delay beach tournament back in 2008, about 5 years ago, as a teenager.

he better make his serve a weapon somehow. needs to be more breakproof to rise further up. groundies are extremely solid and uses the court well and moves well but his net game is kinda shaky also.

I think we need to come up with a name for Nishikori that incorporates the word "mug" or "clown" in it after seeing his performance today.

Awful stuff so far, I will admit. This is the worst I've ever seen him play...maybe the injury has a little bit to do with it but it's still a shocker.

Kei was playing great for the first 3 games, then something turned off and I guess the knee is now hurting.........although I should point out Kei is something like 0 for 10 break points.....lmao

Haven't really followed him, does he lack power always, or OS today just an off day?

He usually hit's a moderate but very solid backhand and throws in some curvy slices. His forehand has a lot of spin and on a normal day he runs around his backhand a lot and rips many powerful forehands. His forehand is considered his biggest weapon along with his movement. He isn't feeling well today obviously.

he's gonna catch the Rafa Knee Syndrome soon I feel. BTW that tape job by his trainer was horrible. Thing was so loose it might as well have fallen off.

I'm sure he's not feeling "well". But sometimes we have to remember to give the opponent credit. I hate when you beat a guy and he just says "I'm having a bad day" or "My shots just weren't there today". I just want to say " Have you ever considered that I'm making you have a bad day?"

Obviously Ferrer is a little animal and just out Nishikoring Nish today. Trust me , if he were playing someone outside the top 30, he'd be having a marvelous day and that knee wouldn't bother him a smidgen.

Not sure why Nishikori is so injury prone. Hes japanese and i wonder if his high fish diet meats high murcury levels wish causes muscle fragility.
