Can Nadal regain No.1 before Wimbledon?
Will they interchange for a couple of weeks like Federer and Nadal in the first half of 2018?

Novak. I think he gains at Sunshine Double and smelling him getting open draw for French Final.

Nadal didn't win any lead up clay tourneys last year. If he wins one or two + RG, which will be tough but not impossible, he can regain no.1 ranking. However, a lot will depend on this HC season which ends in Miami. We will have clearer picture by then. At this point, both Nadal and Djokovic may not get away with playing a heavy schedule. Even if they do well in a few tournaments, fatigue may build up and they can look terrible the next tournaments.

Djok will probably collapse in the Bo3 hardcourt matches vs a teasingly resurgent Federer, while Rafa will run the clay table and reclaim #1 after winning RG #13.

If my math is correct, Rafa is defending 4305 points while Novak has 2635 to defend which would indicate that it might be hard for Nadal to catch Nole. Rafa did not play Miami last year so he could gain a lot of points there and did not clean up on the clay warm up tournaments either. Djokovic did not play great at IW or Miami so he could gain some points there. It will be fun to watch.

Djokovic also added Dubai to his schedule so he will pick up additional points there.

I don't think Nadal will get the #1 spot.

Novak Djokovic will have likely surpassed Federer's record of weeks as #1 by October 2020.

Djokovic is also playing Dubai this week, with 500 pts up for grabs.

One can only hope he locks in the #1 ranking for the year, or at least until October. These next 2-3 months are critical - I think he's going to lock in and do it

Well history shows that Djokovic usually keeps his no.1 until November where he loses it at the end. Nadal got no.1 prior to WTF and lost it right after AO. :(

I think no1 is not priority for both players... I hope Novak won't exost himself to keep it... He must think long term, and he has over 2000 points start lead over Nadal in race to year end no1... He knows that if he finish year as no1 310 weeks record is his.... So he wont force thry season...

I'll lean to Djokovic, but it's such a long season - with so little time between RG, Wimbledon, the Olympics and the USO. Will Novak go all in on either IW or Miami, and will he get better results? Will Rafa go all in on the clay swing prior to Rome and fight off Thiem and others? Will the young guys - especially Thiem who is a big threat on clay and HC - win some tourneys, including M1000s? And Fed, Tsit, Med, and Zverev lurk, though it's hard to envision any of them getting to #1 by then.

It seems like a two-horse race with Novak ahead, but it's far from a done deal.

Rome?

Easily Novak. When he won ATP cup the writing was on the wall. Nadal needs Novak to lose at Wimbledon early.

For Nadal, the biggest concern is to win RG 2020 and fight for the remaining Majors, anything else is welcome, but it's secondary, too.
:D

Djokovic is zeroing in now on that number one ranking. Thiem helped him out big time by knocking Nadal out at the quarter final stage in Melbourne. He is going to Dubai not just to get more matches in, but to put points on the board, which he has a great chance of doing from now until Madrid at least. If he continues to build on those points and has the lead post Madrid, he will be cruising until after W IMO, since Nadal will be defending huge amounts at that point.

Novak's major goal for this year is the not the slam record, since that would require winning every remaining major this season just to tie Federer, his goal is getting that number one ranking. I think after he gets it, he will then focus solely on the slams.

What they both defend until Cincinnati is almost the same.

Sure, but they don't defend the same points up to that point every week identically though. Djokovic being the superior HC player, with nothing but points to gain at some of his best play grounds at IW and Miami, also adding in Dubai, is simply going to be gaining more and more. His acid test was defending the AO title and hoping Nadal lost before the semis, he has passed that phase. I don't see him losing now unless he has a catastrophic let down at RG losing early and Nadal defends all his points, highly unlikely.

Thiem is closer to #1 than some people realize, if you project throughout the entire year. If he makes a decent run in Rio he passes Fed to become #3. It's not laughable that Thiem becomes #1 by the USO if Novak falters at Wimbledon and has a meh clay season:

Thiem could defend IW, win Madrid, Rome, RG, and get decent points elsewhere and he #1.
Correct me if math doesn't add up

Could, but that would be a monumental ask for him, as that would some sort of GOAT run at the events. Thiem blows hot and cold a little too much, even if he has improved. He has been consistent at RG since 2016 yes, but he has had some questionable losses elsewhere.

Nadal won't ever be ranked 1st again mark my words! Djokovic will hold number one ranknig all year long and then surrender it to either Thiem or some other prominent next-gen youngster somewhere in the middle of 2021! Here you heard it first...

Aah..how little did we know in February 2020:-DWho would've thought of everything collapsing just 3 weeks later.

Nadal is not bothered about no.1 so his schedule will not be built around it. He likely skips Miami
