No tennis on Tuesday

I saw the schedule for Tuesday and wondered why mixed doubles will be played instead of ladies singles on Ashe stadium at nite. P. Mcenroe reported it will rain all day and nite tomorrow. 90% chance according to weather.com.

The New York weather forecast doesn't look good on Wednesday and Thursday either.

If true, this will make a huge mess of the schedule for the remainder of the tournament.

Come on now, Bud. We all know that it's becoming a US Open tradition that the second week of the tournament has countless rain delays followed by a Monday final ;)

I'm most interested on whether we would have a Sunday or a Monday final. It always seems to get washed out.

Someone could end up having to play matches on 3 consecutive days or something..

Well, at least the USO has plenty of practice squeezing 4 days of tennis into 2 and finishing on Monday.

With night play (and the ability to expand the number of matches at night if necessary), rain delays can easily be overcome during the first week. But, the second week, especially when they are playing night matches, rain can quickly wreak havoc.

Last year it gave Djokovic an extra day of rest .. which was good so nobody could blame his loss on fatigue :)

Apparently, there's a high pressure area over Long Island that is keeping the rain at bay, currently. Federer may be fortunate and get his match in tonight after all :)

It makes you wonder why the hell the USTA built Arthur Ashe stadium in the first place, or at least the way it was designed. What was wrong with Louis Armstrong stadium when it still had the upper deck of 1978-1996? Arthur Ashe stadium is a nightmare in terms of building a roof.

Absolutely. It's not that it's impossible, but it really would be easier to just build a new stadium with a roof rather than retrofit a roof onto Ashe, But Ashe is already so big, it would be weird for he second biggest court to be the one with the roof.

Also, do they have room at the tennis center for another stadium court? I guess they could tear down Louis Armstrong and the grandstand (two courts I like so much better than Ashe) and build it there.

Same old threads but in response to this

"What was wrong with Louis Armstrong stadium when it still had the upper deck of 1978-1996?"

What was "wrong" among other things was the absence of two giant levels of corporate suites and the money they bring in, which counting tickets and the food minimum probably exceeds the take on the entire promenade.

They decided to have the pro surfing tournament in September this year in ny because of the extreme likelihood of storms and hurricanes. Us open should be played in august early

It was raining so much in the first two weeks of August in NY. It's rain. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it doesn't. Just gotta deal with it.

On a side note why do they start matches at 11 a.m.? Perhaps if they started at 9 a.m. they wouldn't run into the issue of having the day session spill over into the night session and having the 2nd night match start near midnight

Can we put a roof in there tomorrow am ??

Yeah totally. I think the US Open officials are hard at work on manufacturing a gigantic umbrella that they will place over Arthur Ashe stadium tomorrow morning so that they can proceed with their scheduled matches.

They have those new inflatable roof tops that they can put on. It is expensive but possible.

I was checking the radar map on weather.com, and, assuming they have the courts covered (so as to not **** time away trying to dry them), they should be able to play later in the afternoon... I'm no meterologist, but it looks like the vast swath of the storm's current trajectory will be north of NYC

Yeah, surely there must be an indoor 20,000-seat tennis stadium close by that all the ticket-holders can get to easily.

The USTA should reserve Madison Square Garden for the second week and lay down a hardcourt. MSG capacity for tennis could be pretty near what Ashe holds, though would probably come up a little short.

I just looked at the weather radar. There may be a window in a couple hours. The storm is making a big counterclockwise swirl which may go north of New York in the afternoon. There's still more coming up from the south but I think they can get several hours in today. If New York would be 100 miles to the west, the whole day would be a washout.

Should get the Chinese to donate a roof for a stadium and allow them to have sponsorship rights to the roof that will be painted red.
