Where did you hear that? That would be a very unique arrangement.

From what I heard the NCAA recently allowed (about 5 years ago) schools to give 4 year scholarships guaranteed if they would like and I know that is pretty rare for them to offer it but they do offer the top players these deals. I dont know if it is odd that he can come back and use it when ever he wants but I was told that Ohio State offered a similar deal to Bjorn Frantangelo (he obviously did not accept it).

I did read in an article that WF offered Noah Rubin to come back and finish his degree at WF for free. That's the least WF can do for Noah Rubin for what he did for WF. WF was unknown until Rubin put WF on the map in 2015 in the NCAA final against Ryan Shane. I watched that match in person. Even though Rubin lost to Shane, WF got better tennis recruits years after and won the 2018 men championship, team and individual.

WF owed Noah Rubin that and it could not have happened to a nicer person than Noah.

Btw, Ryan Shane got the USO WC in 2015 and got destroyed by Chardy. I watched that match live at the USO too. It happened at one of the outside courts.

I think we can all agree that Rubin made a mistake in coming out early and Shane needs to go into the corporate world. I'm sure he's made enough contacts playing tennis.

I thought WF was traditionally one of the best tennis schools in the USA?

Wake recruited Gojo and Chrysochos after they got Rubin. That's really the only reason they were good the past couple of years.

Really only near the top since roughly 2015.
Well that’s when TTPS got serious about tennis so yeah, to him Wake Forest has been a powerhouse since the beginning of his time which means since history began given how egocentric he is. :-D So yeah, wake forest has traditionally been apowerhouse. :)

Well, not so fast. Shane's family is not uber wealthy but definitely upper middle class and very well educated. They can definitely support his tennis until he does not want to do it anymore.

I don't think so, he's made 10K so far this year. The clock is ticking, it costs 140K just to break even. He needs to get a real job. he's at the low level challenger level.

Well, those two and Mansouri, Seraphim, Botzer, Banthia, Melios, Cungu and others...

LOL, just looked at Chrysochos's final junior tourney results:

whoops my bad... read the title and not the recent posts. I'll go back to lurking. carry on

No problem, I guess my point is how can the family carry you if you are are in your mid 20's and still losing money playing tennis? its almost like another four years of college without a scholarship. i would like to see Rubin at least make it into Top 100.

There are many college graduates that are still living @home with parents. If the family is willing to do that, why not? Shane's family is well off and his parents can support his tennis dream which I personally think is great.

most of the college graduates that are living at home have real jobs that are paying more than the poverty wage. I honestly believe that is great. Sometimes you have to be a realist. At this point, the odds of him making the top 200 is remote. The dream is over.

I think people who have $$$ think differently than you. If my son is as good as Shane and he wants to pursue a professional career, I would definitely support his 140k/yr tennis dream for at least five years because I have the financial resource to support him. After five years, we can sit down and discuss it further. If my son wants to continue and either myself or his older brother can support him, I would not hesitate one bit. You only have one life to live.

As I've said before, I don't know the Shane's family but I've seen them at one of the high end health clubs where my family is also a member there and Shane's family can definitely support his tennis dream. They are making an investment in him. It is definitely a bad investment in term of money but the family will be fine. Shane will do well in the corporate world after his playing days is over.

I think reasonable people regardless of the financial status $$$ think differently than you. Please stop with money flaunting etc(high end health clubs). This is year four for him. He needs to stop mooching of his parents and make his own path. The corporate world would welcome him with open arms. Look at Jessica Pegula, she's made her own path. Her parents could cover her and ten other players for 10 years or more. for everyone else, who's been the best UVA pro?

LOL.... It's their money and what you called mooching, they see it as supporting their son. You're telling him to get a real job but it is not your call. You're entitled to your opinion but not your own facts.

No kidding, its mooching plain and simple. He's making a decision knowing that his parents will cover him. Everything I said is obviously my opinion. I've seen his type before. Can't make it in the world on his own. The dude will be 30 still trying to make it in tennis. Pegula can take of herself and doesnt need her parents money. he can't

Why is the dream over? The only people who won slams are over 30. He's a decade away from his prime.

You're correct about the age prime. Ryan is 24 or 25. The average age of a top 100 male pro is 28 (not directed to you) so ******** about how younger players are funded and by who is short-sighted given the amount of time it takes to make it to a money making position on the ATP tour.
Who the hell is Shane?
This is a Noah thread.

Former NCAA champ. See thread above. It's not a big deal for a thread to veer from the topic some. It will come back to Noah soon enough. Relax.

That's very ignorant statement on your part. You don't know Ryan Shane and you don't know what he is capable of. Shane got a very good education at UVA and won the NCAA men tennis single championship. Those things do not happen without hard work and determination. If my son turns out to be Ryan Shane, I will be ever grateful.

Are you playing on the challenger tour? Did you win the NCAA? Until you do, you have no credibility with your opinions.

How do you know that Pegula does not need her parents money? It is wishful think to think that she is not getting help from her parents.

don't be stupid with your ignorant statements. of course i did not play on the challenger tour or Win the NCAA. Name one player sans Dan Evan who has come from 367 to make a decent living on the tour. Pegula has made 368k this year. she can take care of herself. This is why its very difficult to become a pro that can make a decent living on the tour. Shane has made 10K this year. Your opinions carry zero weight.

to everyone else, I'm moving on. Tennis need to be made more accessible to the journeyman tennis players. The current format sucks.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I cannot stand Noah Rubin. While I appreciate him advocating for better pay at the lower levels, I'm sick of the "tennis is dead" talk. I don't know, I feel like he comes off arrogant and entitled. /rant

I know a little of what you are talking about. From what little I've followed of Rubin, I believe his comments are informed and designed to shock the USTA, ITF, ATP, WTA awake. The governing bodies of our sport seem to be disconnected from what the Challenger and higher ranked Futures level player face day-to-day. They also seem to squander funds (mostly USTA) they raise every year.

There's no reason why around 300 or so (male) players can not make a living playing the pro tours. Not sure about the WTA side. Right now my guess is around 125-175 men make a living or break even yearly on the ATP/Challenger tour.

If you aren't ranked in the top 100 by 25 years old, it's time to get a real job.

Unless you're Pegula or Navarro...they can play as long as they want.

Pegula and Navarro will be top 100 by age 20

Good for them.

I was just saying if they didn't make it by 25, it wouldn't matter, because their parents are billionaires & could fund their dreams forever.

For most other non billionaires, 25 is the cut off to make it in the pros before your parents go broke.

Why should you care if you are not the one supporting them :p
