Play or rest?

Of course he should deny Medivac, though I don't see why that should be much of a challenge anyway. Djokovic has an almost 2000 point lead in the race.

It's a weird world where a guy who won 3 slams might actually lose the YE #1 ranking to a guy who won one slam.

I can't see Novak travelling all the way to IW to pad his lead by another 1,000 points, assuming he'd win. He already holds the YE #1 record, I wouldn't play much if I was him. It's been a mentally exhausting year, to put it mildly.

i think he is really wasted ..he fell away physically at the olympics, then tried to win usopen without any tourneys because he was so tired, then struggled on and off before being flat and nowhere in the final..

maybe he needs the rest of the year off, not another attempt of "chasing history" for a second time this season which would be 7th ye no1, but he might give it a go. dunno really.

I think he can still do it by playing Paris and then YEC somewhat well. Medvedev is going to need to basically GOAT his way through IW, St Pete, possibly Vienna, Paris and YEC to do it.

thing is, the way he’s playing I could see him winning both the Masters events which would put Djokovic in a quite uncomfortable position.

I’ve said from the beginning though we deserve a Medvedev Djokovic title match at the YEC for #1. That would be epic and a true throwback to the golden days when world #1 battles were followed almost as closely as Slams, and the players really cared about it.

Wouldn't really hurt to play one of IW or Paris and then YECs. Get good results there and he should seal it. If you think about it Djoko can seal even more records these last few months of the year. 7th YE#1, he can take masters count lead, and tie Feds YECs record.

Djoko has faced some real mental and physical pressure due to CYGS but if you think about it he hasn't really played all too much this year. As usual he plays the 4 slams, nothing uncommon there, but outside slams he has like 4 tournaments. That's why he hasn't secured #1 yet.

Medieval is invading the kingdom. Is war an option?
Medieval era is upon all now, but I expect Djokovic to fight and make a last stand. He will not want yet another massive milestone slip away after losing at USO. He doesn't even need to win much.

Nah. The YEC 2016 final still gives me PTSD.
Why? You got to see an ATG’s peak level on indoor hardcourt to win YE #1.

seriously though Djokovic sucked in that one and I have a feeling he might suck again if it came down to it this YEC. That’s why I’d like to see it, would give a good indication of what fire is left inside of him heading into 2022.

Medvedev basically has to win 2 out of these 3 tournaments: IW, Paris, YEC while Djokovic fails to accumulate 1,000 more points for the rest of the year for Meddy to take #1. I'd give Medvedev about a 20% chance of getting this done.

He is warrior so he loves war. He should keep playing to maintain his level but should not too much to burn him out. No one gets out of half-retirement (like Fed, Rafa this year) and suddenly succeeds.

Has Med announced his schedule yet?
I figure IW, Paris and one of the 500s -- Vienna?
He's down 1990 points and he has a shot at up to 2.500 points there.
...
I don't know Novak's shape -- physically and emotionally.
As great a season as he's had, he put his heart-and-soul into both The Olympics and the USO, and came away "empty".
...
Much as I'd like to see him notch a 7th YE#1, if he's not injured, perhaps, he should just go for either IW or Paris (not both) and the ATP Finals. I'm guessing that his heart isn't into fighting like crazy for it, though he is both resilient and competitive as hell.

(Sumthin like that. Carry on.)

Its a battle to be Earth's Mightiest for a very very long time....as someone will need 8 to topple him and we have seen this record is the hardest to topple as Pete has managed to hold onto it until even now when records are falling like dominos

I think Medvedev said in the post final press conference that he will not play Vienna as it overlaps with St. Petersburg, which is his priority, being his home turf.

That would be GOAT of him if he can win both St. Pete and Vienna which are being played in the same week this year :laughing:

I wouldn't sweat it unless Medvedev wins IW, a slow hard court he has no decent results on. Even then, it's a herculean effort. Your boy is gonna win #7.

Often if Ye1 goes to the wire the two players who scrap it out go out early in australia. I do not see any benefit to Djokovic expending more energy and mental effort at the age of 34 when the slam race is on a knife edge.
If he plays events to rack up points but loses in the events he plays his aura will be diminished as players will feel he is there for the taking next season. if he goes all out to win remaining events he will be gassed next season.
If he was 24 then he should play. At 34 call it a day this season. Medvedev likely has a let down anyway now.
Tsitsipas probably will do best this fall.

As I'm not a Nole fan, I did not vote in the poll, but I am giving my non binding opinion.
Yes, he must definitely fight for a 7th #1.
He should go for his seventh YE#1 this year, to have the record alone.
The year 2021 will probably be the last he will be in contention for YE#1, because starting 2022, he will be very selective about the tournaments he will participate, focusing mainly in achievable slams (as Federer did beginning in 2017), to protect his body, so his only goal will be to accumulate slams to enlarge his advantage on his fellow big 3 members.

Nope. Take the rest of the year off and go hard for the Calendar Slam that alluded you this year at the very end. Hes no spring chicken now. Matches are very hard to recover from at that age. . Look at the US Open final

I will never understand why the answer to such a question could even possibly be "no". There is a break of almost two months between the seasons, so how can one be exhausted from other matches after that? The only risk would be a huge injury which prevents him from playing in Australia, but this is always possible, even in practice.

Novak should go to Indian wells and should try his best to clinch the rank 1 position and of course he should aim for the YEC as well.

This is a no brainer, only fanatics of Sampras would want Novak to not aim for 1 :D

He is a professional athlete who is fit, he is not some injured guy recuperating his knee or something. After the YEC when clinched the rank 1 mathematically he can rest the remaining time till the Aus open .... no big deal.... a few months will be enough

If I was Novak then I would fight tooth and nail to clinch this year end 1 because it will help break ties with Sampras and that matters.

No. The one remaining record of Sampras that Novak can take to eclipse him is too big to ignore, I know you want Pete to keep at least one record, but Novak deserves it after the season he has had. Fitting he takes it from his idol. It also puts this record to rest for a very long time, as Fedal has no chance of equalling it then while being two behind.

For me as a Novak fan i don t care really.I am still sad about the missed chance for CYGS,and once he surpasse Roger s record of 310 i don t care how many he will achieve.I am sure that s the situation with many Novak fans and Novak himself-let s remind you that at the press conference after the final he didn t even know did Medvedev surpass him as No 1-that shows the level he cares about. So i am quite OK he ll be N 2 if he is fresh and win AO 2022. Furthermore it will also show what charade and disgrace are ATP decisions about the rank in the last year and a half which all were against Novak and in favour of one swiss gentleman. So let the player with 3 grand slam and a final end at number 2 to demonstrate ATP clownery-i am sure even Medvedev will not be happy to be N1 this year because he will know who the real N 1 is .
