non-poly, non−gut mains/smooth poly crosses review thread

Addixions+/Wasabi broke around the 4.5h mark, so decent durability in the end.
Very consistent output until the last 20 minutes where it trampolined a bit.
A bit stiffish in feel but otherwise pretty good string with great control.
In the reel-cost-around-a-100 category, certainly worth a try.

Both great, but I'm concerned about the future of HDMX. Still available in certain channels, but TW and most others in the US market have stopped carrying it, which makes me think that Tecnifibre is consolidating that range down to basically Triax alone, at least eventually. A shame, as HDMX fills a nice middle ground.
They don't list it on their site either anymore.

I am restringing at around 12 hours. I am not a string breaker. But I start to lose a little control at that mark.

MF mains 55lbs
Smooth flat poly cross 46lbs
16x19 99

Has anyone here tried Tourna Synthetic Gut Armor? I’m looking to try it as a hybrid with a half-set of Wasabi X that I have left. A friend gave me a full set of the Tourna, and I want to see how it plays with the Was X. Full poly has started hurting my elbow.

Once as a main crossed with Ghostwire. Durability was terrible, amongst the worst of all the strings I’ve tried before. Tried the 1.25mm (17g) and it lasted 5 hrs for me. It’s very soft and slick for a syn gut, so might be good for your elbow recovery. Because my test was so short, didn’t leave any other impression other than it was average. Nothing really stood out, in terms of feel spin etc.

For reference, on average, Touch VS 1.25mm lasts me 20hrs, Velocity 1.30mm 25hrs, AK Pro CX 1.30mm 23hrs, HDMX 1.30mm 20hrs, Quasi-gut Armor 1.30mm 9 hrs, Wilson Nat Gut 1.30mm 28hrs.

Thanks, man.
I’ll try it first and see how long it'll lasts for me. Meanwhile, I’ll try to get other Multi/SG options as mentioned by you and others in this thread.

Ok so the PLP 1.25 mains/Alu crosses lasted nearly as long as MFB/Dark Matter breaking at just over the 6 hour mark. Pretty good for a thinner string, I’d assume the 16g would last longer than the multis. I next threw in Lux Supreme 1.30 with Alu rough. Will update when I get more time on it.

Tried the PLP/Wasabi-X in a 2 hour session.
Suprised how much I hated it. Zero grab on the ball, worse than most I've tried recently.
Combined with the good amount of power, normal shots felt challenging to keep in the court.
Quite a comfortable response, slices and touch shots worked well as the no-friction string bed just neutralised any incoming spin so you can concentrate on the trajectory.
Strings out of place after 30 minutes, the usual stuff.
Decent durability, from the notching I assume it would survive another 2 hour session but likely not a third.
Considering just cutting it out but I'l likely play it until break anyway to have a fair comparison with the rest.
Personally I don't care much for poly main/multi cross but I assume PLP would lend itself well to that with how slippery it is.

Soft slippery string always has a VERY LOW string to ball grab.... if string is soft n slippery it must have edges otherwise don't work for my vertical swing path. My Flat shots worked great though with round slippery soft strings

I personally haven't tried PLP yet, but if you ever try this hybrid again definitely increase the tension. 23.5/22kg is a pretty low tension to be playing with syngut/multi. I recommend trying it somewhere around 25/24kg.

That should help dampen the power in the mains a bit. Plus tighter crosses, in my experience, enhance the feeling of "crushing" the ball on the stringbed, and the "bitey" feeling you get from the string action/snapback of the mains.

You could also try a stiffer cross like Toroline O-Toro Snap Tour Flex (jesus that name), and see how that improves the control/feeling of bite.

@veelium -Re- the all-over-the-place strings, I wonder if you spring-loaded the mains enough. Guessing you won't give the combo a second chance, and you're probably done with non-p/p hybrids, but if you did try again, I would tension both mains and crosses a bit higher. That still won't solve for the lack of grip, though. PLP in the mains definitely doesn't have as much of it, versus MFB and others with more slick-but-tacky type outer finishes. The slick + oily definitely doesn't grab the ball as well, at least not before the outer faces are worn down. And if you're breaking it that fast, then PLP mains probably just won't be for you.

As for use in the crosses, it can be really good there, provided, again, you tension it high enough to give it more firm "rail" like properties, such that it reduces the tendency for it to buckle and warp when the poly mains are sliding across it under ball impact.

Also, what is your normal frame, string setup and tension these days?

I've found PLP mains and WasX crosses to work extremely well for me, but I am much more of a 'McEnroe' flat hitter. Also, I'm stringing both mains and crosses up around 62-64 lbs on average in a 95 with only about a 1 or 2 pound at most differential to ensure the "rail" effect.

Yeah for flat shots it works well. The more grab you have the more finicky the trajectory becomes imo on the flatter shots.
It's just not my normal way of hitting the ball.

For that kind of swing I imagined that it would work very well.

Definitely went too low in tension. Going higher might keep the mains in place a bit longer but won't improve the grab I want.
With Rexxxer crosses I remember it being not such a big issues so the extra slickness of Wasabi-X was counterproductive in my case.
But that trial was in the summer and in a different racquet so not a fair comparison.

All these tests are in a Prince Tour 95, mainly the 2015, sometimes the ATS or the 2019.
All roughly the same specs, stock with a minimal amount of lead to get to around 330SW.
Looking forward to getting the version that comes out this year.
Very open pattern on that frame, I'd probably double the durability with a denser 18x20 (used to play that).
Normally I play VS gut 1.30 with Hawk Rough crosses, 24/23 with 10% prestretch on the gut.
Sometimes other crosses, not too picky in that regard but I also bought some reels before it was discontinued (now it's back I know haha).
Partially in winter I play on gut-killing wet indoor clay courts so I have to use other string setups there.

Anyway I still have 5-10 multis at home that I haven't even tried yet and around 3 months of indoor time so the testing continues.
Durability isn't a big concern for me if the performance in the first 2 hours is great.

What tensions did you use?
Datasheet says 24.5/23 but might have been 24/22.5.
Could and should likely go north of 25 kilos with PLP.
Do you string PLP higher than gut in hybrids? I remember you using both.

Could be interesting to use PLP with a shaped cross to get some bite back.

@veelium I enjoy the TT or ATS100P very similar feel as the TT95 but with a more dense pattern. If you haven’t played that frame it could be worth a demo.

Great stick, I've tried it a bit though I feel more at home with slightly smaller headsizes.
Someone round here is selling an unused ATS100P carbon for a good price so I might revisit it.

I'm going to go the cheap route this time. Next hybrid I will try is Artengo/Kuikma TA500 1.35 on the mains and MSV Co Focus on the crosses.
DHCeGBA.jpeg

I will try it tomorrow at my local league, stock Radical MP g360+ plus leather grip. Strung at 22/20 Kg (Artengo TA500 1.35/MSV Co Focus 1.18).

MSV has amazing strings really, no fancy marketing or packaging, just pure decent German quality product at a great price level.

I am still with RIP 1.30 xSwift 1.30 which lasts between 2 and 2,5 hours. Fantastic setup, but with my arm having cured completely now I likely replace the RIP for a MSV poly main soon, only for durability reasons. Likely will take Co Focus as well but as a main with Swift crosses.

I have been rotating a couple of different racquets recently, but I'd say ak pro/rexxxer(in an ATS 95) is about 8-10 hours in. The mains are now stuck out of place after each point, but it still feels nice and plays pretty consistently, though I feel like I am getting some launches here and there that were not there at the beginning. I am going to play it until it breaks, which I think will be pretty soon.

I put isospeed professional classic/rexxxer in an ATS 98 and am digging the familiar feel of professional classic---I used professional classic and control classic in a number of racquets in the past. At least fresh, I felt like I had more overall control than with the HDMX combos I had been using. I feel like I lost a little zip off my serve, though. Rexxxer seems like it may be stiffer than the crosses I used with HDMX, so that also may be contributing to the perceived increase in control. At least so far, friction between professional classic and rexxxer seems significantly lower than that of ak pro/rexxxer.

I still have a pack of poly tour fire waiting to be used, so I will probably give that a shot with AK Pro when I break the current AK Pro combo.

Testing kirschbaum touch multifibre, prince premier touch, and tecnifibre multifeel black mains all 16g crossed with toroline snap tour flex at 55/48 in wilson BLX tour limited racquets side by side. All setups have approx. 1 hour each of playing points/teaching use.

Touch multifibre- soft feel in the hand when stringing, slick to touch, moderate stretch. Good amount of through the court power, lowest trajectory of all, good spin. slightly muted plush feel at impact. Feels like an upgraded version of head reflex.

Premier touch- Soft feel in the hand but very dry feeling like it does not have a coating, lots of coil memory, very little stretch. Good amount of through the court power, good spin, trajectory slightly higher than multifibre, slightly lower than multifeel black. This is my second time playing this string and the feel is top notch, best multi I have tried. It plays very soft yet offers a touch of crispness to feel a great connection with the ball, especially on volleys and backhand slice.

Multifeel black- Slick feeling in the hand, moderate stretch when stringing. Slightly less power than multifibre and touch, slightly higher trajectory. This string plays crisper than the others with good spin. Harsher just outside the sweet spot than the others. Best way I can describe it is it plays more like a poly in feel and performance than the others. Played good tennis with it but the feel was my least favorite out of the three.

All three strings had plenty of spin and control with the snap tour flex crosses. I believe spin is more about technique than one string being way better than the other, all played very close in spin tor me. My preference is something that I feel connected with and plays consistent. I’m hoping the snap tour flex crosses help by staying slicker longer than my previous favorite cross kirschbaum max power. So far I’m extremely impressed with the prince premier touch and looking forward to putting more hours on these 3 setups if weather permits.
I have roughly 5 hours time with each setup rotating them in during practices and first off I’m extremely impressed with toroline snap tour flex as a cross string due to it maintaining slickness. I would consider it more of a medium stiffness poly with fair to good tension maintenance. I strung it up at 48 lbs and would bump it up to 50-51 next time due to tension loss.

All the multi mains tested continued to play great after my initial post. Kirschbaum touch multifibre was probably my least favorite of the bunch but I am being overly critical because it was still a great string. To me the feel was more muted than the others and it was moving out of place more than the others. Slightly less action on kick and slice serves, played great off the baseline, good touch with volleys. It seems to be able to do everything well but there was nothing that really stood out to me with this string.

Tecnifibre multifeel black- initially the feel of this string wasn’t my favorite as it felt closer to a poly due to the crispness but it soon settled in after the first hour and the feel was softer and more forgiving. I would recommend this string for someone playing with a dampened racquet. My BLX is very stiff and raw feeling I think it was almost too much of a good thing freshly strung. Served the best with this string. Increased spin was noticeable on my slice and kick serve, not a huge difference but it was there. This string is still snapping back but it’s notched through heavily, more than the others.

Prince premier touch- this string was my initial favorite and remained that way. The feel just leaves me more connected than the others. Obviously it’s not going to be as good as gut but to me this is the closest feeling synthetic string I have played to gut. I’m surprised it’s not talked about much on here. Durability has been surprisingly good as well as spin off my kick and slice serve. I haven’t tried it yet but due to how soft this string plays I see it being great at higher tensions. For fun I occasionally like to take my old pro staff 85 for a hit so I strung it up with premier touch/snap tour flex at 52/47 and really enjoyed the touch in the pro staff. Perhaps in the newer frames that are more dampened it could feel muted but so far it’s playing great for me. I plan on testing it side by side with Prince lightning pro mains next in my BLXs.

Just broke tourna sga mains was x crosses after 2match, didn't let me finish my 3rd match .
First couple hours it does feel good.

aside from ytex touch - which is 16g, and trupro lux supreme - which is 17g, do any of the brands who offer lower pricing for stringers, have a nice product that comes in reels?

What kind of racket do you have?

Moves all over the place after 5 min, I do like the feel but then ocd takes over.
I play denser string patterns than you... 18x19 in a 73 square inch frame, tight 16x19 in a 90, 18x20 in a 93. That doesn't affect me that much.

I agree, though, that it loses its slickness faster than either PLP or MultiFeel, which are my other go-to mains. Can't argue with the price, though, and the spin/feel is pretty close to the others.

True that dense string patterns makes a world of difference in string movement. I play Angell K7 Lime 18x20 that also have a very dense 18x20 pattern and Prince ATS100P with an open 18x20.

Advantage with 18x20 pattern is that you can play multi strings for feel and power without breaking strings too fast.

How is the durability compared to RIP? And since I see you tried many combos, what multi main has best durability?

Have a couple of strings on the way for testing in my search for more durability of my current setup (Swift 1.30 @ 23kg x RIP 1.30 @ 26kg).

Objective is 4 hours durability with similar control and comfort.

Came across the topic about Irukhandji and I think the flatter shape will really slow down the notching of the RIP. Ordered the 2.0. As I also read it needs to be strung higher I am going for Irukhandji @ 25kg x RIP @ 26kg.

Other strings I ordered:
1) PLP - will put this as a main with Swift crosses. I don't think I will like this better than RIP and neither do I expect longer durability but the string is so popular that I must try
2) Isospeed Control - might try this both as main @26kg with Swift cross @23kg. or as cross @26kg with RIP main @26kg
3) MSV Co Focus 1.23 - if none of the above works it will put this in the mains to try. Likely this will be less comfortable but might still be fine in my BAPs

Will update once I start playing again mid-Feb!

Redarding 2) then this hybrid is sold by Head as Intellitour. RIP main / ISO cross make sure you also try that combo.

Yes, think that might work fine, not sure how slippery Isospeed is. RIP/Swift works really fine in this regard with very decent snapback. I understand that that wears of with Swift over time but I didn;t get there yet. RIP full bed however strings all over the place.

if you want a flat cross, which is what I play....
ytex is the brand
square-X is the string
it comes in black or white
the black is softer
it's very slippery and FLAT!!!!!!
it does NOT notch my 17g mf main until around 12hours.
it's a great option for you to check out and you can get packs from them.
it is 16L
you can try it at a lower tension than you're accustomed to using, and it should still work great for you.
good tension maintenance and comfort.
really nice control/touch.

do not get square-X sharp, that is a diff string that ytex carries. it's not flat. it's quite pokey and sharp.

I’m going to try PTP as a cross tomorrow. I’ve been playing the same reverse hybrid for months.

MF mains 55
PTP crosses 46

Checked but i have no access to this string in Spain unfortunately. Also it seems that Irukhandji is the flattest of all oval strings
