Nordic noir, drama from Scandinavia and a little beyond

I thought I start a thread where we can discuss our favourite Nordic drama series.

With roots in TV dramas like The Killing, Wallander, The Bridge (Bron, Broen), Borgen etc, Nordic Noir has become a genre in its own right.
We can cover films too of course.

What's your favourite, what are you watching now or would like to see?

I'll start the ball rolling.

Loved all the Swedish Wallander series, esp the Christer Henriksson ones. They were stellar!
Never got the English version really, romping about in Skåne (South Sweden) with English pronunciations!

The Bridge was great.

Enjoying Gåsmamman (Mother goose) just now. On its third series.
About the established Stockholm drug baron scene. Sonja played by Alexandra Rapaport, mother of three has to deal with the fallout of her husband's and brother's high stakes drug running (and large scale growing) business.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gåsmamman

I must also rewatch the film trilogy The girl with the dragon tattoo etc.
In Swedish Män som hatar Kvinnor (Men who hate women in English).
Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist (now sadly passed) are great in their
respective rolls.

What's your favourite and why?

Lars Von Trier Movies!!!!
(but too many Hollywood actors there maybe to be considered a Nordic Noir, but has that vibe to it still)

Riket(Riget)- a fantastic scary tv series from Lars Von Trier.

Broen is my fav Tv series from the North. I love the main character. Her persona is something different, little autistic, but charming in her own way.

Lillyhammer is another one, maybe not so dark. But funny

The Killing (made women knit even more trying to make the detective sweater lol)
Another great female detective :D Hail the women!

Think one reason this became popular is because of the way it is filmed and the light. Its different.

A little easier tempo and not really that 'noir' was the series Fröken Frimans Krig.
Set it 1905 it's based on the true story struggles women had in Sweden
to set up a food shop in a mans dominated world.
They were boycotted & threatened along the way.
There's a good dose of votes for women, lesbian stigma and the injustices of the prostitute scene faced by women back then.

The Bridge was very popular. Mammon looks interesting.. The thought of mass knitting hysteria breaking out in Norway made me chuckle :)

Hodejegerne
Headhunters.
One of the good movies from Norway among the many bad :p
Starring one very handsome Danish actor (they have so many handsome to choose from lol) Probably most men reading this, but if there is women I just had to mention it.

I really enjoyed this movie. Gruesomely violent but up there with the best thrillers to come out of Hollywood in recent years.

I remember watching a very funny Norwegian movie about 15 years ago about two people who were discharged from a mental hospital who were living together as part of their rehabilitation. Does that ring a bell with you?

Knitting wool is a big thing over here.
Many celebs and models comes out with their own designs. Knitting has become hip.
Old and young. Some men even have their own knitting designs and tips.
I could make a separate thread about it, lol. But thats going too far for a tennis forum. Stretched it far enough w my heartbreak thread. :p

Could it be: (but they are not mentally ill, - mentally disabled)

Hall of Fame
Frygtelig lykkelig - Terribly Happy. Reminded me of Blood Simple.

As noted above, Headhunters was really good. I've only seen the British Wallander and the American versions of The Bridge and The Killing. My wife is never in the mood to deal with subtitles, which limits what we watch.

Hinterland has a Nordic noir feel to it, as does to some extent Shetland, both of which I like.

Oh no!
Not in my Netflix :(
Hm. Wonder if I have to move my Netflix over to Norway account? Or do this go automatically over to where IP address is? I started Netflixing outside Scandi years ago and still connected to a bank account abroad.

Gåsmannan has the Islandic drug barons trying to muscle in on Swedish territory in series 3.
The Swedes call them Pingu & Penguins :)

I'll check our Netflix and Amazon for Saknad too. Sometimes I get DVD's in the post from relatives with series and films..

Always best with no subs ;)
I don't like watching terrestrial broadcasts because of that..

I did find Nobel on Netflix.
På Norska. could be of interest..
Have you seen it?

Also saw a good TV series set in Iceland about a murder on a ferry near a small port to the west of the country.

The tension builds as bad weather isolates the small community and the ferry is grounded as we follow the intrigues of unscrupulous local politicians. Sadly can't remember what it was called.

Yep noir but not Nordic.
But worth a look at,

There are 5 counties in the Nordic group. From west to east, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Greenland isn't counted - belongs to Denmark.

Scandi is just Norway, Denmark and Sweden. This group reflects the commonality of the language.
Although a Swede from the far north or even Stockholm struggles to understand everything a Dane says :)

Icelandic is a descendant of old West Norse. Eastern Scandi descends from old East Norse.

The Finnish language is not related at all to the others but had its origins in the Uralic Hungarian region.

Complicated isn't it :)

I started to watch it, but had to turn it off when it was about shooting/disarming a kid who maybe had a terror/suicide bomb.
Which brings me to this movie, french actress, Norwegian director. Partly in Afghanistan, partly in Denmark.
An intelligent movie about whats happening in Afghanistan. (the Danish actor same as in Headhunters)

Its a shame we can speak like they do in Iceland! Love their language. When I meet Icelandic people its like they speak the language I should have spoken too. Its a beautiful language. Thanks to them some of the Viking literature and poems got taken care off. In Sweden and Norway most of it got burned by he Christians.

@TheGhostOfAgassi Did you know that in Northern Scotland, in Wick particularly, they celebrate their Viking ancestry and some even claim to be Scandinavian despite having several generations of Scottish roots.

I knew they were more into wicca stuff than over here.
But then I saw what the army here are up to (Norwegian consider to be one of the best in the world)
The Army boss name in Norway strangely named Odin. This makes me feel just wow:
But you are the predator. Taliban is the prey. To Valhalla!"

I once met two girls from the far north of Sweden in Copenhagen, who were on their way home after a vacation in Greece. They considered themselves witches, and would go into the forest at home with an old woman who knew all about the pre-Christian uses of plants, and beliefs. Many of the women killed for being "witches" in early Christian times were experts on the medicinal properties of plants.

There is Viking ancestry in Scotland, but probably much, much more Scottish and Irish ancestry in Iceland, as evidenced by DNA studies, especially mitochondrial DNA. Western Norway also has a lot of inheritance from Scotland and Ireland.

"The Wicker Man" is a good classic horror film about a town in Scotland that practices old Celtic rituals. Sorry, my post is somewhat off topic.

My parents are not considered very spiritual at all. But when our dogs ran away and werent home for a week they went to a psychic living in the mountains and asked. He drew a map in the sand and showed were the dogs were(these are hunting dogs and strong instincts so sometimes they run away). Found the dogs.
When I was a child they told me to be careful with the forces in the woods and even mentioned Huldra.
Many have seen ghosts and spirits. The more you get in touch w nature the more you become like this I believe.

The Norwegians found Iceland and the Irish came later. Therefor they speak Norse there and have a lot of the Viking culture. Many of the Irish were slaves as well as the Native American women the Vikings brought.
But after short time the Irish were free people. In an area of Iceland there was a Viking queen, she was very powerful. And the Sagas says she might be Scottish or Irish. I went to a concert some weeks ago, band from Iceland, all the guys in the band were redheads... All of them!

Red hair is not a Norwegian color at all from the beginning. Our original DNA is pure Arian and no red in it at all. But many here red heads (not as much as in Britain though). Must come from Scotts and maybe Ireland. If you look at the map you see how close Scotland is. Must have been a piece of cake for the Vikings going there considering how far they could go. My grandma had red hair, so my son. I guess I have some Scottish blood too!

Ofh dear! Yeah that sounds a bit OTT! I don't like violence when it's unrealistic or involving kids / sick!
Can sometimes FFW / skip those bits if it doesn't destroy the plot.

That film looks interesting. I recognize that face as Jamie from Game of Thrones.. I found GoT not as gruesome as Tudors.. But the latter actually did happen of course..

I saw Bjork perform with The Sugercubes when I was a kid. The language sounded so strange and intriguing to me. Had a bit of a crush on her.
Years later I finally visited Iceland for a vacation. Spent a week driving around the entire island. I really loved the serenity and peacefulness of the drive and seeing all these amazing natural sites, but it wasn't enough time.

I want to go back again in the future to spend more time in Reykjavik area.

Yes it's very attractive. A little like it's backwards and you feel like you should understand it all but you only get a fraction of it - well I do anyway. Bloody Christian do-gooders trying to eradicate others history and culture. <rolls eyes> Ditto, Aus aborigines, North American Indians etc etc!

@TheGhostOfAgassi Did you know that in Northern Scotland, in Wick particularly, they celebrate their Viking ancestry and some even claim to be Scandinavian despite having several generations of Scottish roots.

The whole region of Iceland, North Ireland, Scotland, Denmark and Norway was basically one community. They had kings, fought and lived / traded almost as one. This is pre 800 - 1000AD or so (from memory). I read a great book about all this ages ago though..
Sweden was more focused towards toward the Baltics. Uppsala was a religious centre for the Vikings of course.

Many, many people in the UK and now the world (through Britain sailing the 7 seven seas) have very significant Scandi / Nordic DNA..

When it comes to racism I will not be ashamed of being arian. Or my Viking roots. It was Hitler and his peeps that brought the arian obsession into the picture. Hitler has nothing to do with my ancestors from the North. He can go an f himself. He wasnt even a viking hilself. He made it worse for us and our culture. Yes indeed.
Racism has been around a long long long time before Nazis and perhaps even before Arians?
We were so tribal and territorial.

If only we had a history recorder in our brains of where we came from and why, things would be so much better. Might have got in the way of survival of the fittest though :)

But do we need all that baggage now as we populate the planet to bursting point. Need to get on with each other better.

Well off topic now, but interesting all the same.
