Yes indeed.
Racism has been around a long long long time before Nazis and perhaps even before Arians?
We were so tribal and territorial.

If only we had a history recorder in our brains of where we came from and why, things would be so much better. Might have got in the way of survival of the fittest though :)

But do we need all that baggage now as we populate the planet to bursting point. Need to get on with each other better.

Well off topic now, but interesting all the same.
I think back in the days it was more about survival of the fittest.
And we do get along better and better. Racism has a lot to do with fear. But knowing cultures and physically know people from other cultures makes us less sceptical. Something thats happening naturally with globalisation. USA is a paradox to all this, a divided nation. But overall I think it looks positive. I can see big changes around here how people look at other cultures. Doesnt mean we adopt all cultures or tolerate everything. But respect is the key and accept the differences. Deep down we all are humans.

Totally agree. The more we get to know each other, the more we realize we are more alike than different and it becomes harder to be racist and divided.

The education system we are exposed to, religion, and our social circle we grow up with also play a large role, too.

The U.S. is a bit divided in some areas, but not all. The areas that have both a diverse population and a population that mingles with others outside their race/social/etc group seem to get along the best.

Its not only about racism but sceptisism to different ways of living. F.ex gays.
I feel Nordic countries very liberal and accept different cultures and ways of living more than any other western country I have been to. This includes women liberation. We have ministers being from other nationalities and religions, lots of females in important roles and also gays. Its nothing like it in USA, UK or rest of Europe. Maybe rest of the world. Im proud of this, that we aim for this.

Well, back to Nordic Noir.
A new tv Series that has so far started good. Dark and bizarre, from north of Norway.
Its called Monster

As storm Ophelia cruises by, largely missing the south coast we have the wood burner on and it's time for the evenings Nordic Noir :)

Might give that film a go or Rebecka Martinsson, or get voted down for another Gåsmamman..

Rebecka Martinsson has made me to get a Fjellraven parka for the winter :p
Enjoy!
I went to one of the stores in Sweden or iceland when i was on vacation bc i love their logo. I was going to get a backpack but the backpacks didn't quite have enough compartments and pockets for me.

We watched the first episode of Rebecka Martinsson.
Liked it. Beautiful scenery and captures the small town rural (glesbygd) atomosphere perfectly.
Not seen the famous Parka yet.
A thick Polo neck jumper so far. Winter is coming though :)

I always keep a Parka in the boot of the car in case.. don't need the snow shovel here though.

Are there English subtitles?

I can't seem to locate my babel fish.

Usually the Nordic released ones feature subtitles for just the Nordic countries.
Danska, Finska, Norska, Svenska :)

Other releases for English, Spanish and other regions depend on intended market.

Im watching more of Monster. Its really good. The cinematics, the interior, nature and actors .... Its Nordic Noir taken as far as you can get it.
If you change IP address to Norway you can watch it on NRK for free. Its maybe the best Ive seen since Broen. Very minimalistic as Scandie culture often is.

2 women running naked in the snow for fun and soul cleansing, next day they have a fight and try killing each other. 16 year old cute girls carrying weapons (thats actually legal here) Men solving murders naked in the sauna, leads to another naked fight. Great drama:D

Must check it out.. Sounds like it's probably not for Mrs Steve though..

We're enjoying Rebecka Martinsson.
2 episodes (one story) left.

The last Rebecka Martinsson story was the best of the 4.
Dropping like flies up in Norra Norrland.
Worse than in Midsomer murders in a quaint English village :)

Left open for another series.

Yeah, that ending was quite disturbing. Typical Nordic Noir!
you maybe understand now I got exited when I thought it was 4 more episodes ?
My mum has been talking about that ending and wanted to discuss it with me, "what do you think she did, stay or not"? So we had a serious talk about that. lol. To then remind our self its only a story. :p

Ha! Yes I understand wanting more. I think it will be back at some point. Unfortunately a lot hangs on ratings.

Yes it's only a story and has a commercial need, although art does get a shout I like to believe. What's the point otherwise.

I think she goes back home, thinks about it, solves a murder or two as quickly as a crossword, then returns with that never ending plastic bottle of hembränt (Home brew) and screws the hell out of him. Sex sells :)

Tears of regret and joy, fears for the boy, the emotion of seeing Krister with the boy? Pangs of her own childhood haunting her?

It was left hanging though..
After her childhood you'd like to think they adopt.
Hardly perfect adoption material is she, unless she settles down a bit and stops doing all the police work :)
Mind you the boy doesn't have a better choice, with pyshco tant (not really aunt) trying to kill him and drowning herself she was never really in the picture of course. She should have taken CARE of the boy - he'd accidentally get locked in the freezer or some such a couple of months later :) mum in Enköping or wherever showing a cold shoulder..

Model Swedish families :)

My mum was "worried" Rebecka couldnt handle the emotions and move back again to Stockholm.
She is obviously in love w the guy. Being w kids is a bit difficult for her because of her childhood.
I think she would have warmed up. The guy is so nice and caring for the kid, so even she is a thriller seeking person the kid will find stability with the new father. Rebecka needs a couple of more horrid murders to solve before she eventually calms down and starts a law firm in the nearest town. She will get pregnant and they all live happily ever after. But as a good Scandi they will never marry, love is enough :p

Sorry English speakers / readers, it's all in Swedish, but the answer is maybe :)
As a bonus there are a couple of pics of Rebecka to remind us of our tenacious heroine (or hero if you prefer gender neutral), and even an arty one of Björn Borg!

Jordskott series 2. We just about remembered the first series.
You'd have to have seen series 1 to get series 2 at all! The recap was pretty poor.
Where will it lead, what's the point? Oh well nice to hear Swedish spoken :)

The policewoman from Rebecka Martinsson (she was pregnant at the start) popped up as a doctor, minus the norrlänsdk dialect, oh and Deoda from julkalender Greve på Greveholm circa 1996 was also a policewoman. She was a drug trafficker in Gåsmamman :)

(and just wondering if there are some good comedies?? I haven't seen any yet.)
Umm, do you mean comedy films or series.
I like British comedy films like Shawn of the dead, Hot Fuzz etc. Life of Brian being the daddy of them all..

I've not really kept apace with recent Swedish comedies. Solsidan (Sunny side) was one though. Okay but a bit lame.

There was a police one that was funny called Kopps a few years ago. That was funny.

Classics are Sällskapsresan film series.

The best imho being the third S.O.S

I think the dark side of the Nordic dramas appeals to me. The protaganists don't have to look perfect. They seem like real people.

And then, if a Nordic series is a big success, the Amerians have to reproduce it and Americanize it. It usually isn't as good.
I wonder, as a Canadian, if our nature is somewhat similar to the Nords. (OK, we're very tainted by our American culture, but I think we can relate to dark and cold! ;)

If you ever want to check out typical Canadian humour, one of our favourite Canadian comedy series was Corner Gas. They showed it in the US, and it achieved some cult status, but the Americans, for the most part "didn't get it".

Rather like the forest / tree disease some of the characters are 'infected' with, it's growing on me :) I'm not so sure about Marie though.

Instead of being set in heart of the forest in Silverhöjd this series is in Stockholm set with a rather hard concrete jungle backdrop.

I figure nature or super-nature finds a way, inspite of human constructs.

I do still wonder where it's going, but that is all part of it.

That kind of humor I dont understand so well :p
I like Ylvis kind of humor better. It can be I have too much Italian genetics in me, and sometimes Norwegian comedy gets too dry:oops:

I would not say "Koselig med peis" has humor as its project at all. It's very dark, and it opens up to a reality that sometimes hides behind the nice picket fence, and the humor lies within the tragedy of the broken dreams, the malfunctions and the hopeless relations between the characters. Not a very original idea, but I liked the way it came across in this series. It was very unpolished, very raw.

Jordskott has its critics.
The characters are rather impersonal and hard to like - that's the lot of them.. usually there are a few you can empathize with or even like.

However it's become rather involving.
Yes it's fantasy but it's down to earth fantasy - literally :)
We were rather indifferent to it during the first series. Watched it for the language more then anything, but as the second series has gone on, it's become a want to watch thing..

Just saw the Swedish movie ‘A Man Called Ove’. A sad yet feel good movie at the same time. The Europeans do these movies with low budgets and much greater sensitivity than our friends in Hollywood. The sound track was a feature.

I leave you with the closing song.
