Just saw the Swedish movie ‘A Man Called Ove’. A sad yet feel good movie at the same time. The Europeans do these movies with low budgets and much greater sensitivity than our friends in Hollywood. The sound track was a feature.

I leave you with the closing song.

She is an Iranian immigrant in Sweden and an amazing musician.
When the mass murder tragedy happened in Norway, many teenagers got killed, it was a concert to honour the dead. And she did this song, its hard not to cry listening to it. Many got affected w what happened. Norway is a small country.

A cute song about snow(snø) and love.

"Last Exit" is an interesting, but not very good film, mainly notable for its incredibly low budget and guerrilla filmmaking.

It is interesting that so many Scandinavian films and television series are so bleak. I am not sure if it is a result of the long winters and the legacy of the likes of Carl Dreyer and Ingmar Bergman, and the traditional literature of the region, or maybe just an antidote to ABBA.

The answer lies in the Svårmod = melancholy, or direct translation, difficult mood.
Yes it's probably the long dark winters. Going bananas during the light long days of summer and then back to the darkness.
Difficult to handle..

He's a little play on Swedish words I'll leave you with.
Svärmor, svårmod svärord :)

Im ok watching torture and killings as long as its not kids involved, then its just too painful.
Marie's okay with killings if as Arnie says in true lies "they were all bad".
Or for example loosely historical like Vikings.
If the subject matter doesn't interest then the tolerance goes down..
She would watch Terminator the Sarah Connor chronicles as a sci-fi liker but not something like Banshee or parts of the Tudors.
It's a fine line finding stuff to watch sometimes.

We watched the first episodes of Black Widows. Not bad.
We struggle with some of the Danish, sorry Danes but a lot of Swedes do.
The Moth scenes ep 2 sums it up nicely.
I know lots of people from southern coastal Sweden who have no problem with Danish, but move further north it's a different story.
They will do all they can to avoid speaking Danish :)

How is it with you?

I have to throw in Astrid Lindgren here. Her books formed Scandinavian kids. She must be one of the most influental writers after Ibsen.
Mio min mio, Emil i Lønneberget, Ronja Røverdatter, Brødrene Løvehjerte, Pippi, etc.
There are so many tv series and movies based on her books.
I remember specially Løvehjerte and Ronja Røverdatter being big for me. I have girlfriends naming their daughters Ronja after watching it when they were kids themselves.

Ah that's good.
I know the more we watch and listen the more we understand.. it's just exposure.

It's funny, listening to some songs seem easier. Perhaps it's the repetition?

I wonder does a the average Dane understand everything a norläning says? Easier as they don't say much :)

Ive been once to Umeå. Had a good time having saunas and swimming in lakes.
Its quite common that swedes and norwegians dont understand danish that well and vice versa.
I have an interest in language and danish is so similar in writing to norwegian, its like its a farout dialect. We have a lot of dialects in Norway, that is probably difficult to understand for some as well.

Yes that's what I've gathered.
We have a friend from Bergen we have no problem with.

Very Scandinavian humour..
It was made in Norwegian first and was so popular there they made in English with Norwegian actors, accents and all. I think that's nice.
Apparently 1 million of the 5 million total Norwegian population watched it!
Did you see it when first released GoA?

In Vikings Floki was played by Stellan Skarsgård's son, Gustav Skarsgård.
Stellan was in that sort of comedy film En ganska snill man.
So a little Scandi connection in Vikings. And they were supposed to be in Uppsala, centre of all things Asatron (old Norse religion).

Yes, Floki is one of the best actors in the series. Its very much built up on real vikings believes. There is a couple of Norwegian actors in it as well. And honestly... some of the blond actors in there probably has some viking genetics from back in the days, as blond blue eyes originates Scandinavia.
I don't like the game of thrones.. but love the Vikings. Lagertha is my fav female all time tv series character.

Oh the irony...only a LITTLE Scandi connection in a programme about VIKINGS??? :D

The so-called history in the series is almost complete rubbish. Different characters from different time periods all mixed up for starters. Entertaining enough so long as you view it like a Scandi version of Game of Thrones!

Its not a documentary about vikings, so I don't think people believe this is a true story.

I hope not but it's not always made clear. It's more easy to believe it for those of us less acquainted with the facts because 'Vikings' does include some real historical persons unlike, say, Game of Thrones which everybody knows is complete fantasy.

We're making good progress on Black Widows.
Have the finale of series 1 to go.
It's a mildly erotic romp with the odd murder thrown in.
I can't quite figure out which of the widows I like most. Perhaps that is the idea :)
Low body count compared to most..

Character Johanne (Synnøve Macody Lund) was born in Stord.
Bit odd as that's not far from Bergen.
We struggle to understand her as much as the Danes :)
