Nordic noir, drama from Scandinavia and a little beyond

Midnattsol was pretty good.
Endless daylight does weird things to you.
Sami / Swedish tensions run deep.
This turned really noir pretty quickly. More noir murders / multiple murder finale, than you could shake a noir dipped stick at.. rating 8/10.

Started watching Graven (The Grave). Swedish police drama.
Missed it until now..
Made back in 2004.. no iPhone, Nokia ruled the airwaves..

After a slow start setting up the criminal investigative team things got better and weirder!

If people are into the Scandi-noir detective dramas, then I'd highly recommend the Scottish series, ''Taggart''.

This was a grim and gritty drama, set in Glasgow, which debuted in 1983, and is arguably the inspiration for the entire genre which flourishes today.

Started watching the Swedish drama Quicksand.
In a Swedish - Störst av allt

It's on Netflix.
Interestingly the default language is dubbed English.
Fortunately for us we could change the audio track to Swedish - yay!
No subtitles, I guess other languages are available. It's the future of TV watching..

The start is quite noir!

This genre seems to be a case of historical tourism. Noir worked better in the immediate post-war world.

There's something fraudulent about the contemporary versions with some notable exceptions like Taggart.

I really like the Hollywood film noir genre that developed after WWII. While it was rooted in cinematography influenced by German Expression, and the feelings of alienation, dislocation, and moral uncertainty common with the returning soldiers, noir is also suited to Scandinavian cultures and climates. Crime in cold, bleak winters is an interesting contrast to the more cheerful, orderly aspects of Nordic realms.

Beneath the ABBA facade, there is a lot of darkness in the Scandinavian psyches and cultures. For example, there is Hamsun, Ibsen, Munch, and black metal/death metal from Norway; Strindberg, (Stieg) Larsson, and Bergman from Sweden; and Kierkegaard, Dreyer, Høeg, and von Trier from Denmark. The Danes also tend to have a dark, morbid sense of humour that matches the long dark winters.

Scandinavian countries tend to have a group (herd) mentality in their film and television industries. There will soon be a new trend.

Re-awaken this one.

Nordic Noir is back - did it ever really go away?

Deadwind (Netflix) was good.

Watched it without wife. She grew up in the Swedish frozen wasteland and won't watch much Nordica!

Pihla Viitala as Sofia Karppi:love:
Lauri Tilkanen as Sakari Nurmi grew on me and became really quite dependable!
Even his ****ty old 850i:)

After years at Nokia I speak fluent Finnish :-D

I thought I start a thread where we can discuss our favourite Nordic drama series.

With roots in TV dramas like The Killing, Wallander, The Bridge (Bron, Broen), Borgen etc, Nordic Noir has become a genre in its own right.
We can cover films too of course.

What's your favourite, what are you watching now or would like to see?

I'll start the ball rolling.

Loved all the Swedish Wallander series, esp the Christer Henriksson ones. They were stellar!
Never got the English version really, romping about in Skåne (South Sweden) with English pronunciations!

The Bridge was great.

Enjoying Gåsmamman (Mother goose) just now. On its third series.
About the established Stockholm drug baron scene. Sonja played by Alexandra Rapaport, mother of three has to deal with the fallout of her husband's and brother's high stakes drug running (and large scale growing) business.

I must also rewatch the film trilogy The girl with the dragon tattoo etc.
In Swedish Män som hatar Kvinnor (Men who hate women in English).
Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist (now sadly passed) are great in their
respective rolls.

What's your favourite and why?
what's the best movie with hot women ?

Deadwind series / season 3 (y) Finnish noir

Psyco on the loose, complex dual / triple plot, new hybrid car that sounds like a Tube train for Mr Nurmi, Ms Karppi as fetching as ever, what's not to like?

I really enjoyed that one. The two things that stand out to me is when he is first taking the train to the place where he is supposed to be in witness protection, there are some young kids harassing a woman and everyone else is just watching and Van Zandt's character can't believe it and intervenes.
The other time is when he's trying to get a liquor license for his bar and gets the bureaucratic/socialist run around until he finds compromising pictures of a local official and suddenly, he gets the license almost immediately.

Yes agreed. It's a fun romp
We found the 2nd or was it 3rd series, kinda ran out of steam.
The first one is good though.

Netflix is offering up all the Scandi / Nordic films on one line.

I spotted / earmarked;

The Trip (Danish / Swedish couple trying to kill each other) - more comedy than noir

Black crab (Svartkrabba) with Noomi Rapace - definitely Swedish noir

Stockholm Östra (Stockholm East) - drama not noir

Vilsen (lost) - definitely Swedish noir, detective serial killer stuff

Love academy, series (Sascha Zacharias - Rebeka Martinsson actress) - drama not noir

Plenty to be going on with.

More Danish / Norwegian / Finnish / Icelandic too.
