North Korea, South Korea, and America off to the Olympics together

Just like in the good old days, all conflict is to cease for the Olympics - apparently:

North Korea’s Olympic representative has reportedly said the reclusive nation is “likely to participate” in next month’s Winter Games in South Korea.

The comments by Chang Ung, Pyongyang’s representative to the International Olympic Committee, come a day after the North and South agreed to hold rare talks next week and hours after Seoul and Washington announced they would postpone joint military exercises that rile North Korea.

...

Seoul and organisers are keen for the North to take part in the games to help ease worsening tensions on the Korean peninsula stemming from Kim’s confrontation with the world over his country’s nuclear and missile programmes.

Russians will be there in full strength. We just have to pretend when they win gold that they are really not from Russia.
Come on, man. Let's agree at least that if you think the U.S. is screwed up, Russia is screwed up ten-fold. For example, if you think the murder rate in the U.S. is high, go on and check Russia's. Three times larger.

This is the apples and oranges fallacy.

This all just reminds me that there's a Korean grocery in Chicago that I want to go to sometime early this year; supposed to have a great dine-in lunch counter. Looks good.

Korean restaurants are becoming so popular. I went to one of those and lines were long. I had to sign up and had waited to have a table.
Their food was just excellent. My friend want to take home all left overs. I had to give him a ride back to his place and he forgot his takeout bag.
Guess who ate them:D

Half of the Japanese restaurants in London are run by Koreans.
Ironic since Korean food is better than Japanese. But since Korean food getting more popular more Korean restaurants pops up!

The live boiled dog is divine, you pick which one and they cook it at your table.

Interesting Youtube video about Korean girls first tasting American pizza: comparing New York (ugh) to Detroit (eh) to Chicago (yum). . . Chicago won, just barely edging out Detroit (to be honest, I'd never heard of a unique-to-Dtown pizza). No one liked the New York.

so it goes. . .

BB: that's their preference, you know.

they are putting on a act. they want to defect and they need our help

Nobody really seems to care about doping these days, strangely enough, and now the Olympics embraces North Korea.

It's official: the new form of ping pong diplomacy is off and running:

North Korea will send athletes and cheerleaders to next month’s Winter Olympics in South Korea, after the two countries held their first official talks for more than two years.

The North Korean party will also include performing artists and journalists, South Korea’s vice unification minister, Chun Hae-sung, said after the first session of talks ended on Tuesday.

Chun added that South Korea had proposed that the two Koreas march together during the opening and closing ceremonies at the Pyeongchang Games, which open on 9 February.

Since I'm something of a Korean food junkie (well, after Chinese anyway) let me recommend an underappreciated Korean dish called sundubu (or soondubu - hard to tell what the most common/official spelling is when the Wiki article uses one that I generally don't see). It may be a little hard to find a joint that serves it, but if you dig kimchi, galbi, bibimbap or other usual Korean dishes but would like to try out something different make the tofu stew your next selection. Just be prepared to use lots of tissues. :D

And the latest ping-pong diplomacy is indeed good news. The Winter Os gave the USA/SK a most convenient cover to halt their macho stance for the time being.

North Korea has NO good intentions in that so called Rare talks conference. This is 110% sure. South Korea should have just told them to F off. but during Olympics, politics are put aside and all will compete in good spirits............. Easing tensions you say ????????? NO chance. this ruthless mad dictator in north korea will never relinquish his powers.

Yes, well, the world works better when we think and act pragmatically.

Russia has the same sized economy as Australia. I straight up couldn't believe it at first but it's true.

As for the thread topic, what else is new?
America will clean up in medals, SK might get a few, and the NK team members will never be seen again after failing to win their events.

But Dear Leader Kim will break world records in everything he attempts and probably successfully pilot a space mission too.

There's some kind of Korean BBQ place near my uni campus. I decided to use it once for a date as it appeared to have a great atmosphere on a cold winter evening, and it wasn't half bad. The meat was fantastic and the service was great.

We've never returned, not sure why. We'll have to go again.

This has been the greatest injustice in terms of sports inclusion in the history of the Olympics.
I mean it's difficult to take the Olympics seriously a lot of the time anyway. A lot of it seems political.
I wouldn't trust any of the judged events at all, and for some sports like tennis and football it's borderline irrelevant.

I was a bit put off at the beginning because everyone seemed to be doing their own table cooking, but I soon discovered that was not compulsory.

Yeah we had the option to cook ourselves at the table, and we leapt at the opportunity. A nice hybrid between cooking ourselves and just being served food. The idea is that you can cook it just to your liking I think. It worked well for us.
